Description
June 15, 1954 D. PETIT APPARATUS FOR QUENCHING SEMICOKE Filed April 15, 1952 r9 7- TOEh/EY.
Patented June 15, 1954 UNITED sTArs r OFFICE 6 Claims.
This invention relates to apparatus for quenching coke. More specifically, the invention relates to apparatus for controlling the temperature of semi-coke resultin from the low-temperature distillation of coal.
Similar apparatus may be used for controlling the temperatures of other materials, such as shale or lignite which has been subjected to lowtemperature distillation.
It is known that the semi-coke as it is discharged irom the low-temperature distillation oven is readily ignitable.
In View of this, it is undesirable to place the coke in hoppers or trucks without first reducing its temperature to a desired safe limit which limit varies according to the circumstances.
The apparatus of the present invention assures that the temperature of the semi-coke immediately after discharge from the oven is reduced below that temperature at which the semicoke is readily ignitable. This apparatus comprises a rotating chamber for semi coke into which a quantity of water is introduced from a regulated liquid supply system. The chamber is disposed in an inclined position for gravity unloading of a charge from its lower end. The water supply is automatically controlled by the discharge temperature of the semi-coke. The temperature of the semi-coke is regulated by a thermocouple or another similar arrangement which regulates from a distance the introduction of water into the chamber. The vapors resulting from the quenching of the semi-coke are removed through a flue after having passed through a cyclone dust separator which separates the entrained dust. The rotating chamber may be of any desired shape in serving as a mixer into which the water is introduced.
The disclosed drawing is a vertical section of the apparatus schematically showing a suitable embodiment of the present invention.
Semi-coke is conducted by a conveyor l and a chute 2 into a hollow cylinder 3 rotated by a shaft 4, driven by a motor and gear means 5. The cylinder 3 is provided on the inner periphery with angle irons or iron plates 5 which serve as bafiles to break up the semi-coke in such a manner as to assure its best contact with the water and also to facilitate escape of the resulting steam. This cylinder is disposed in an inclined position for gravity unloading of a charge from its lower end.
The water used for quenching the semi-coke is introduced into the cylinder through a nozzle 1 the rate of flow being regulated by regulator 8, controlled at a distance by a thermocouple 9, placed immediately below the semi-coke outlet of the cylinder. Upon its discharge from the cylinder, the semi-coke passes over this thermocouple, and the semi-coke is then collected by a conveyor 10. When the temperature of the semi-coke at the outlet side of the cylinder rises, the thermocouple 9 actuates the regulator 8 and the amount of water introduced at l is increased accordingly.
On the other hand, if the amount of water is more than necessary to give the proper temperature to the semi-coke, the thermocouple temperature is reduced and the amount of water introduced at nozzle i into the cylinder is decreased accordingly.
The vapors escape through a cyclone dust catcher ll Where dust is removed before the vapors are discharged into the atmosphere through a chimney I2.
