F. W. CARPENTER.
TOY SLEIGH.
No. 267,773. Patented Nov. 21, 1882.Y
lINITED STATES FRANCIS W. CARPENTER, OF HARRISON, N EW YORK.
TOY SLEIGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,773, dated November 21, 1882.
Application filed October 5, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS W. CARPEN- TER, of Harrison, in the county of Westchestcr and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Toy Sleighs, of which the following is a specification.
In Letters PatentNo. 227 ,956, reissued March 14, 1882, No. 10,063, toy cars are represented with the bodies of thin cast metal.
l My present invention is an improvement on the foregoing toy; and it consists in a toy sleigh with a body having sides and back and y a dash-board all cast in one piece, and a seat that is supported on cast-lugs and secured by a' rivet or screw. The runners are of cast `metal riveted or fastened to the body, and the wheels on which the toy sleigh runs are connected between the runners and bearings cast upon the under side of the sleigh. The axis of the wheels passes through the said runners and aids in supporting them. The shafts are fastened to the under side of the sleigh, and are provided-with a cross-bar at theonter end, for strengthening the shafts and for receiving an attaching-cord.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the sleigh. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan.
The sleigh-body is provided with the sides b, curved back c, with curved upper edges, the dash-board d, and low front c, all cast in one piece. There are downwardly-projectin g bear-V ings q for the axisf that passes through said bearings q and through the wheels g and the runners h.
The'run ners are each cast in` imitation of sleigh-runners and provided with top anges, i, by which the sleigh body and runners are fastened together by rivets or other suitable means. Theends of the axis f passing through the runners aid in tying them together, so that they are strong, and there is a space between each ruimer and the adjacent bearings qrfor the reception of the wheel g.
The shafts l are cast with cross-piece m at the back and abar, a, across between the front ends, in which is a hole for a cord or string, by which the toy can be drawn about. The rear ends of the shafts are below the front part of the sleigh andriveted thereto at k. The rivets may be cast on the shafts.
(No model.)
The horse 0' is similar to that shown in my lon said sides and back for the seat to rest upon, and a rivet or screw, w, serves to hold the same firmly in place.
This cast-metal vehicle-body may be placed on wheels instead of runners, and I remark that the bottom a of the vehicle-body is shown as a separate plate of metal secured to the body by rivets; but it may be soldered or otherwise fastened in place, or it may be cast in one with the other parts of the body.
The parts may be made of malleable castiron, so that the pins that form the rivets may be cast with the respective parts.
I claim as my invention- 1. A toy vehiole-bodyfhaving its sides and dashboard formed bf one piece of cast metal, substantially' as specified.
2. In a toy sleigh, the combination ofa castmetal body and cast-metal sleigh-runners fastened to the body, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a toy sleigh having a cast-metal body with Vmetal runners fastened to the body, and an axle and a wheel or wheels, substantially as specified.
4. A cast-metal toy vehicle-body having its sides and back for seat formed of one piece of cast metal, substantially as set forth.
5. A toy vehicle-body having castmeta-l sides with one or more lugs cast on the sides,
in combination with a piece adapted to rest `body, cast-metal shafts, and a bar connecting the outer ends of the shafts, substantially as set forth.
8. The toy vehicle-body having sides and back for seat and a dash-board in one piece of cast metal, substantially as set forth.
9. The toy vehiele-body having sides, curved back, and low front e in one piece of cast metal, substantially as set forth.
10. The toy having a body and east-metal runners with flanges at their upper edges and attaching-rivets, substantially as set forth.
11. The combination, in a toy sleigh, of a cast-metal body, east-metal runners, Wheels, and a shaft for said Wheels passing through the runners, substantially as set forth.
12. 1n a toy, a east-metal body in one piece,
havingsides, rounded back andfront, anddown 15 ward projections, in combination with the axle passing through such downward projections and Wheels upon such axle, substantially as set forth.
13. The toy vehicle body having sides, zo curved back, and dash-board in one piece of cast metal, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 4th day of October, A. D. 1882.
FRANCIS W. CARPENTER.
