VALVE-GEAR FOR OSCILLATING ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,725, dated November 21, 1882,

To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valve-Gear for Oscillating Eugines, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
Myinvention relates to valve-gear for oscillating engines, particularly to such engines as areadapted to beemployed t'orlocomotives; and it consists in valve-gear having the movements derived from the driving-wheels, operated by means of and embodying the mechanism hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, (two sheets,) Figure l is a side View, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of such parts of a locomotive-engine embodying my invention as serve to illustrate the same. Fig. 3 is aside view, the cylinder and valve-chest being removed. Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 show de tails drawn on a larger scale.
Of the two driving-wheels on one side of the locomotive, one, A, is on the axle B and fer to have the crank-pins on the one side of the locomotive set quarter-ing with those upon the other side.
Between the driving-wheels A and O is pivoted the oscillating cylinder F, having trunnion a in box b connected with frame E, and trunnion c in box d, on the outer end of the curved arm or bent support 0, fixed to the frame E. There are two pistons in the cylinder F, which ply in opposite directions. One of the pistons has a rod, f, which connects with a cross-head, g, and the other piston a rod, h, which connects with a crosshead, t. The cross-head 1 slides between and on the inner sides of ways or guides), and the cross-head t on ways or guides 70, said ways or guides being fastened rigidly at their inner ends to the oscillating cylinder. The crank-pin G, attached to the wheel A, passes through the cross-head g, and the crank-pin H, attached to the wheel 0, passes through the cross-head t.
To the cross-head g is rigidly joined a projection or stand, J, and to the cross-head t a stand, K. V 5 5 ()n the trunnion a is a sleeve, 1, having the two arms L fixed thereto, the sleeve and arms forming a bar, which may have an oscillation on the trunnion a independent of the oscillation of the cylinder. At the outer end of one of the arms L is pivoted a connecting-rod, M, the other end of this rod being pivoted in the stand J. To the outer end of the other arm L is pivoted a connecting-rod, N, this rod be ing pivoted at the other end in the stand K.
The end of each of these rods, which is pivoted to one of the stands J and K, might be pivoted directly on the adjacent crank-pin, though I prefer to pivot each rod to a crosshead or a stand thereon, since thus there will be less movement and wear of. the bearing in the rod. It will be readily seen that by this arrangement of the connected rocking arms L and connecting-rods M and N, wheels, crankpins, or cross-heads thereon, the wheels must 7 revolve in. unison. Pivoted to the oscillating cylinder, or to a guide, 7, and projection 8 attached thereto, is a rocking stand, 0, which has extensions or arms m and it. To the arm m is pivoted at 0 a rocking piece, P, having two extensions or arms, 10 and q. To the arm 17 is pivoted the outer end of the valve-rod Q, and. to the other arm, q, is pivoted one end of a connecting-rod, R. The other end of this connecting-rod is pivoted to the sleeve 1, or a projection thereof. To the arm a of the stand 0 is pivoted one end of the connecting-rod S, the other end of this rod being on a pivot-pin, 1', adjustable in the curved guide and. stand T. This guide and stand is firmly secured on the arm 6, fixed to the frame E. The block and pivot-pin r and a similar block and pivot-pin on the opposite side of the locomotive-or this end of the connecting-rod S and of a similar rod for a similar purpose on the opposite side of the locomotivemay be so connected by a cross rod or shaft that the two connecting-rods may be swung along the curved guides at the same time by means of a lever in the cab of the locomotive. By means of this device two motions are combined in the movement of the valve in either direction, one mainly by means of the oscillating sleeve 1, connecting-rod R,
and rocking piece P. This motion will he most rapid when the crank-pins G; and H are passing acrosslines extendingperpendicularly through the centers of the driving-wheels. The other of said motions is by means of the oscillating cylinder or guide j, attached thereto, connecting-rod S, and the fixed guide and stand T. This motion will be the most rapid when the crank-pins are crossing a line extending horizontally through the centers of the driving wheels. In the former motionnamely, the one for which the connecting-rod R is employedthe valve is moved mainly at the time before opening and after closing the portsthat is, this motion gives the lap and lead to the valve. In the latter motionnamely, the one for which the connecting-rod S is employed-the valve is moved over the ports' that is, by this motion the ports are opened and closed. Thus the ports for the admission of steam to the cylinder and for the exhaust are opened promptly, and free passage is given to the steam in the most effective manner. By moving the end of the connecting-rod S at the guide and stand T, on each side of the locomotive, toward the center of said guide the opening for the ports is decreased, and when said end of rod S is above said center the movement of the valve is reversed. In whatever position the connecting-rod S may be swung, if the ports are opened at allthat is, if the said end of rod S is not in the center of guide "-they will be opened with the promptness and efficiency above mentioned. My device for obtaining these movements of the valve may be modified in details of construction, and may be applied to a stationary as well as a locomotive engine having one or more oscillating cylinders, or an oscillating cylinder having but one piston, and my invention be involved.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of one or two arms, L, which with the sleeve lform apivoted rod or bar,
a rod, Mor N connecting said bar with a crankpin, rocking piece 1 pivoted on a rocking stand O,'connecting-rod It, and the valve-rod, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the oscillating cylinvalve by means of said oscillating arm, sub- I stantially as specified.
4. The combination of these elements, namely: an oscillating cylinder having valve-chest connected thereto to oscillate therewith, afixed stand, the same being a slotted curved guide,
whereby a pivotpin thereon may he slid while the engine is in operation to regulate the travel of the valve in the manner specified, connecting'rod S, and rocking stand 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In combination, these elements, namely: an oscillating cylinder having a valve-chest to oscillate therewith, a fixed stand, an arm pivoted on the same central line with that of the cylinder, but pivoted to oscillate independently of the cylinder, and mechanism described for connecting said fixed stand and said oscillating arm with valve'rod, to produce the resultant motion specified of the valve.
6. In combination with two driving-wheels on the same side of a locomotive, and arms or a bar to be oscillated by means of rods connectin g said arms or bars with the crank-pins on the driving-wl1eels,a cylinder and chest containing valve located to oscillate on a pivot having the same central line with that of said arms or bars, a fixed stand, and connectingrods and mechanism substantially as described, for connecting said oscillating arms, cylinder, and fixed stand with said valve, for the purpose set forth.
