(Cl. 101-372) This invention appertains to improvements in hand stamps and has for its primary object to provide a stamp for duplicating on a sheet of paper or other material the positions or arrangement of chess pieces on a chess board, so that a permanent record can be made.

Another object of this invention -is to provide a hand stamp for printing chess diagrams for analysis and record keeping, the stamp being able to duplicate in one operation, the complete arrangement of chess pieces on a board, thus obviating the time-consuming use of individual stamps.

A further object of this invention is to pro vide a hand stamp, which is provided with a plu rality of permanent magnets, which are adapted to engage and detachably retain a. plurality of stamp elements, the stamp elements being formed on their stamping surfaces with characters, simulating the various chess pieces.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hand stamp, wherein any chess problem or a1- rangement of chess men on a board may be easily and conveniently duplicated and printed on a piece of paper for maintaining permanent records.

These and ancillary objects and structural features of merit are attained by this invention, the preferred embodiment of which is set forth in the following description, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a hand stamp, constructed in accordance with the principle of this invention;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Figure l;

Figure 3 is a bottom plan View of the stamp;

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4`4 of Figure 1;

Figure 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2;

Figure 6 is a view in perspective of one of the stamp elements, and

Figure 7 is a view in perspective ofv one of the retaining members, which is adapted to engage and detachably hold the stamp elements.

With continued reference to the accompanyn ing drawings, the hand stamp I Il includes an open rectangular housing I2, which is provided with a multi-apertured bottom wall I4. The bottom wall I 4 is secured by headed fasteners I6 to the teriorly of the side walls, so that the lower edge thereof is coplanar with the lower edges of the side walls.

A top Wall I8, which is provided with a series of spaced transverse openings, is seated on the upper coplanar edges of the side walls and secured thereon by fasteners 20, so that the apertures 22 in the top wall overlie the openings 2d in the bottom wall, the apertures being of a smaller diameter than the openings 2li. A partition member'26 is lfixed by fasteners 28 to the top of the bottom wall and is formed with a plurality of transverse openings 30 which are in registry with the openings 24 and are of a diameter, similar to the diameter of the apertures 22 in the top wall.

The top and bottom `walls of the intermediate partition are preferably formed from insulated material and the aligned openings therein are adapted to receive permanently magnetized retaining elements or pins 32.

The retaining elements 32 are formed with a cylindrical body portion 34, having an enlarged head 35 formed on one end and an annular abutment 38 formed intermediate the ends. The abutment 38 is adapted to engage the under side of the top wall I8 and coil springs lll are concentrically disposed on the lower ends of the pins, the springs having their opposing ends abutting the under side of the abutment 38 and the upper surface of the partition wall 26, so as to retain the pins in a raised position, as seen in Figure 2.

Stamp elements 4@ are provided and are detachably mounted in the apertured bottom wall It, the stamp elements being formed with square base blocks d2, on the under surface 44 of which raised characters d6 are formed, the characters G5 simulating various chess pieces, as seen in Figure 3. Cylindrical plugs 48 are formed integral with the base blocks and adapted to be disposed within the openings 2d in the bottom wall of the housing` the plugs being magnetized and being engageable with the lower terminals of the pins, so that the magnetic attraction of the pins dependably retains the plugs in the ings 2d in the bottom wall, so that the number of stamping elements, which may be carried by the housing, equals the number of playing spaces on a chess board.

A cover member or hood 50 is adapted to overlie the upper headed ends of the pins and to enclose the top wall I8 of the housing, the hood having a lower rectangular open end 52, which is complemental to the side walls of the housing and seats on the peripheral edges of the top wall I6. Hinge means 54 is provided for hingedly connecting one side wall of the lower end 52 of the cover to the adjoining side wall of the hous ing, so that the cover can be easily raised to expose the pins for effecting a replacement of the stamp elements, as will be described.

Means is provided for locking the hood or housing in a position to' providedV n withjlateral mounting iianges, which are secured -by suitable fasteners to the side walls of theY cover and housing. A keeper 60 is mounted on the side wall 62 of the housing, supporting the plate E, and. projects upwardly above the upper edge of the plate for locking engagement with a spring urged locking lever E4. The lever B4 is secured by a pivot element 68 to the side wall 66 of the lower end of the cover and is mounted for vertical swinging movement, with a spring being connected at one end to the lever, above the pivot 68, and having its opposing end anchored to the adjoining side of the plate 58. The spring 10 is provided to retain the lever 64 in a vertical position, so that the offset locking end 12 thereof is engaged under the keeper 60.

1n use, the stamping elements 00 are selected in accordance with the particular arrangement of chess men on a chess board or a particular chess problem, which is to be diagrammed. The selected stamp elements are inserted in the openings 24 in the bottom wall i4, so that the arrangement oi the stamp elements corresponds to the arrangement of the chess men or pieces on the chess board, with the playing squares or sections on the board, which do not have chess men seated thereon, represented in the stamp by stamp elements 14, which are similar to the stamp elements 40, but are formed on the under side of their base blocks with diagonal lines 16 or any other desired pattern to represent unoccupied playing sections of a chess board. After the stamp elements 40 and 14 have been inserted in the openings in the bottom wall of the housing, so as to simulate or correspond with the arrangement of the chess men on a chess board, the stamp is ready for use in duplicating the arrangement of the chess men on the board and the arrangement can be permanently printed on a piece of paper or other material, after the under surfaces 4A and 15 of the stamp elements have been inked, which is effected by grasping the integral upstanding knob 18 formed on the cover and positioning the base blocks on an ink pad. The stamp elements 40 and 14 are effectively held in position, due to the magnetic attraction of the plugs 48 and the retaining elements or pins 32. However, the stamp elements can be easily ejected from the bottom wall of the housing. by unlatching the cover or hood and swinging the hood about the hinge means 54, so as to expose the pins. The heads 316 of the pins can then be manually depressed, against the urgement of the springs 40, so that the plugs 48 are ejected from the openings in the bottom wall and can be easily grasped and manually moved from engagement with the lower ends of thpns- Qi course, while the stamp elements have been illustrated and described as representing chess men, it is obvious that the stamp can be used for other purposes, with other characters being formed on the under side of the base blocks of the stamp elements, depending upon the desired use of the stamp.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. A hand stamp comprising a housing having a bottom wall formed with a plurality of openings, magnetic plugs slidably disposed in said openings, base blocks formed on the plugs, said blocks being larger than the openings and disposed in abutting engagement with the under side of the bottom wall, said blocks having impressionable characters formed on their under Sida, a 11.013 wall 0.1.1 .Said housing disposed in spaced..- releiign te the bottom Wall andvr formed with,

4 openings aligned with the openings in the bottom wall, magnetic retaining pins slidably disposed in the openings in the top wall and having their lower ends engageable in the openings in the bottom wall land magnetically engageable with the plugs to retain the plugs in the bottom wall and spring means associated with the pins for retaining the pins in raised position, said pins being depressible downwardly through the openings in the bottom wall to eject the plugs therefrom.

2. A hand stamp comprising a housing having a bottom wall formed with a plurality of openings, magnetic plugs slidably disposed in said openings, base blocks formed on the plugs, said blocks being larger than the openings and disposed in abutting engagement with the under side of the bottom wall, said blocks having impressionable characters formed on their under side, a top wall on said housing disposed in spaced relation to the bottom wall and formed with openings aligned with the openings in the bottom wall, magnetic retaining pins slidably disposed in the openings in the top wall and having their lower ends individually engageable in the openings in the bottom wall and engageable magnetically with the plugs to retain the plugs in the bottom wall and spring means individually provided for each pin to retain the pins in raised positions, said pins being manually movable downwardly through the openings in the bottom wall to eject the plugs therefrom.

A hand stamp comprising a housing having a bottom wall formed with a plurality of openings, magnetic plugs slidably disposed in said openings, base blocks formed on the plugs, said blocks being larger than the openings and disposed in abutting engagement with the under side of the bottom wall, said blocks having impressionable characters formed on their under side, a top wall on said housing disposed in spaced relation to the bottom wall and formed with openings aligned with the openings in the bottom wall, magnetic retaining pins slidably disposed in the openings in the top wall and having their lower ends individually engageable in said openings and engageable magnetically with the plugs to retain the plugs in the bottom wall and spring means individually provided for each pin to retain the pins in raised positions, said pins being manually movable downwardly through the openings in the bottom wall to eject the plugs therefrom, a cover member hingedly mounted on the housing and overlying the top wall and means for locking the cover in position on the housing.
