N UNITED strnrns PATENT orrroi.
THADDEUS S. SCOVILLE, OF NEW YORK, N.`
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,710, dated January 3, 1860. i i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEUS S. SCO- vILLE, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in ClotheswBars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication.
Figure l, being an elevation of the uten-` sil, with the arms extended; Fig.` 2, a similar view thereof, with the arms drawn in, or folded; Fig. 3, an elevation of a portion thereof, showing a modified arrangement, in connection with the device. Like letters `designate corresponding parts in all theiigures.
My invention consists in an improved de-` vice employed as a substitute for hinges, in expanding` and contracting the arms upon which the clothes are hung, for the purpose of dispensing with braces, or other supports for the arms; and for other purposes here` inafter specified.
The arms B, B, may be secured to any kind of support most convenient; that represented in the drawings, being a standard A, made in any ornamental or convenient form. At suitable positions on said support, are secured plates C, C, which may be called hinge-plates, by means of screws or bolts D, D. These hinge-plates are set at an angle of 45 degrees, or thereabout, sub-` stantially as represented in the drawings, so that the arms B, B, may be moved to both a horizontal and vertical position, between them and the sides of the support. These hinge-plates may be adjusted to the thickness of the arms, by turning, or drivingin, the screws, or bolts, D, D. The screws, or bolts, are placed at such a distance apart, that, when the arms are extended in a hori Zontal position, as shown in Fig. 1, the edges thereof will bear respectively upon the one, and under the other, thereby irmly supporting said arms in that position, without the use of braces or any other additional means. The arms may be kept from slipa ping out by pins, or projections, a, a, near` the ends thereof, or,byanylotherconvenient means. When `thus arranged, `the :hinge-` plates do not confnethe movements `of the arms, but allow them to slideifreely end' wise in either direction, between said hinge-"` plates and the sides of the support sof` that the arms not only canassume` a vertif` w ,e cal, as well as a horizontal, position, but canyI slide down to their` outer endstherein,;andf thus fold together vmuchmore compactly than by all other methods. If l desired,il th outer ends of the arms BQ B,m`ay be clon-3. nected by bars E, E, as shown1 at theleftz"` hand, in Fig. l. In this case; I; "usuallylhinge the upper arm or arms to thecon-i .i necting bar, by a pivot or pivots b,and conl `1 nect the lower arm thereto, by means` of `a l hinge-plate C, and screws or bolts D ,1 D.,` U similar to those secured tothe support e Braces G, G, (Fig. 3,) mayfbeemployed to assi'st in supporting" the 1` armslB, B, ifd` f l desired, when heavy articles` are `hungonf` said'arms, the lower endsof the braces being, hinged, as at d, to the support, `and Ithegjf upper ends having :projections f,1f,.fittingl into corresponding notches` g, `g,in thebunf "l dersides of the arms; all in the ,samemanner as if the ordinarylhingeswere e1`nployed.\` But this `feature is not` necessary to myfin` ,l vention, which purposes to avoidtheiuse.of80 braces, or other special supportforfthe eX f l tended arms. What I claim as my ,inventionf anddesir to secure by Letters Patent, is--` 1" The hinge-plates C. C,wandhboltsD, `D, arranged in combination with,` tliesup'portj A, and arms B, B, substantially,` in theman `ner and for the purposes speciiedg* In witness that the aboveisatrue specii.-l cation of `my improvement inuclothes bars,` 90,` I hereunto set my` hand,""this 14th`day o`f"` October, 1859. l, l p l THADSzSJSGOVILLE; 1 1
