' 1 10 Claims. 1 This invention relates to a hair setting mold having upper and lower sections, the mold bein adapted to be placed around the head to embrace the hair and whereby the hair may be combed over the upper section, into a formable lateral opening extending all around th hair mold between the sections, the mold sections having a degree of resiliency tending to maintain the adjacent sections in contacting relation and thereby retain the combed hair in desired wavy form all around the head.

An object of this invention is to provide a hollow, sectional hair mold having upper and lower sections of substantially lliptical form and joinedat the inner surface of thesections, each of the sections being independently resilient and compressible, the hair mold having a formable lateral opening between the sections and extending inwardly at, and all around the outer periphery of the sections to permit combed hair to be folded over the top section and inserted into the formable lateral opening and held therein by the resiliency of the sections toward each other to retain the hair between the sections and impart a set wavy form to the hair, whereby after the mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in waved form all around the head.

Another object of this invention relates to a sectional or duplex hair setting mold for combing the hair between flexible mold sections which are adapted to embrace the head, for setting the hair of a person having any length of'hair, the hair settingmold being also adapted for hair cutting, shaping and permanent waving, and particularly for imparting a desired wavy form to the hair all around the head.

lwo coacting tubular and linearv mold casings of identical form are used. The material used in one embodiment for filling the mold casings is preferably sponge rubber. The rubber is cutin elongated linear form of rectangular cross-section and after insertion into the linear mold casings, the filled casings are superposed and joined together along the adjacent'linear edge to form a sectional hair mold.

The connected hair mold sections are then curved into substantially elliptical shape when applied to the head of the user and this elliptical formation imparts a degree of resiliency to the sections and so that the sections are inherently urged towards each other and thereby enabling the mold sections to engage hair which is combed radially of the mold sections and passed around the upper section and placed in a formable lateral opening formed between the sections with a light pressure from opposite sides to retain the hair in continuous wave form around the head.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims whichform part of this specification.

Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:

In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the numeral [0 indicates a hair setting mold in the form of a hollow body having a tubular upper section II and a tubular lower section l2. The upper and lower sections l l and I2 are preferably of identical rectangular cross-section.

The upper and lower sections are covered with a flexible fabric l 3 which extends around the respective sections, and provides an upright surface 14 common to both sections. The respective edge portions of the fabric l3 after passing around a section are folded at [5 and I6 in parallel relation. with the surfac I4 defining the interior of the hair mold l0.

The folds I5 and [6 are secured together by the stitching IT to form-a seam Hi. The seam is arranged so that a small lateralopening 19 may be formed between the sections II and I2. This arrangement provides two elongated channels 20, 20, extending along the entire length of the pper and lower sections II and I2. The sections Ill and I2 are preferably filled with elongated strips of sponge rubber 2|, each strip filling a section in entirety.

In use, the elongated sections are curved into substantially elliptical shape when applied to the head of the user and this curvilinear formation t'ensions'the sponge rubber and imparts a degree of resiliency to the sections and so that the sections are inherently urged toward each other and thereby enabling the upper and lower sections to frictionally engage hairs placed between them.

' When the user applies the hair mold I0 to the I? head, the surface M of the hair mold embraces the hair with a pressure due to the tying of cords 22 extending from the respective sections.

The user places the mold around the head with the hair overhanging the mold. The user then combs the hair radially around the upper mold section II. The hair is then placed in the formable lateral opening [9 between the sections and is engaged by the adjoining faces of the sections with a pressure from opposite sides and so that the end portions of the hairs are retained in tensioned engagement. This forms a continuous hair wave around the head, and this wave remains in substantially permanent form when the hair setting mold ill is removed from the head.

It is also to be noted that the seam [8 forms a flexible hinge 23 for holding the upper and lower sections 1 l and I2 in adjoining unitary relation andv for moving the sections to and from each other to provide a formable lateral opening t9 between the sections and an entrance 24 thereto; The flexible hinge 23 extends around the inner surface M, defining the interior of the hair mold I0. Each of the sections i l and I2 is preferably filled with inherently extensible compressible elastic material 25.

It is to be noted that the numeral [9 represents a normally closed formable lateralopeni-ng between the sections. The operator inserts the hair between the sections by passing through the entrance 2d and by separating the sections at the entrance. The operator places the hair between the sections, the hair extending the entire or partial depth of the sections. The hairs are engaged by the adjoining faces of the sections until suchtime as a permanent setting is imparted to the hair by the curled form provided by'the sections. It is to be noted that I may employ a tie cord between the mold sections to bring the hair into the opening 19 and to retain the hair therein.

It is also to be noted that my hair mold H3 may be used as a hair cutting device to shorten the length of the hair, the operator being able to cut the hair to equal length with a scissors by merely following the outline of the hair mold.

The hair mold Hi may also be used for trimming or shaping the hair by using a blade. The blade is passed over lengthwise of the hair While it lays on the hair mold and this tapers the hair so that a wave form is eventuated.

As best shown in Figures 1 and 4, the hair 26 is placed crosswise of the hair mold H) and then placed downwardly along the outer upright surface 2! of the upper mold section it, and is then passed through the entrance 24 and into the formable lateral opening [9 between the mold sections where the hair is frictionally engaged between the adjoining faces of the mold sections.

It is to be noted that when long hair is to be waved, that the hair after inserting in the form able opening I9 is drawn outwardly and downwardly over the lower mold section.

When long hair is to be set in wavy form inmy hair mold, I preferably employ a cord 28, which is placed inside the lateral opening E9. The cord 28 is of a length to extend around the body and when its ends are tied, the hair is held firmly between the mold sections. This imparts uniformity to the waved hair and a finish to the overhanging portion of the hair.

In place of the sponge rubber insert, I may inflate the sections of the mold with air or the like.

I may produce an embodiment of the invention identified by the numeral 3-!) and comprising a lower mold section 3| and an upper mold section 32 of generally rectangular cross-section. I may employ a heavy elastic cord 33 which is threaded through apertures 34 in stitch-like formation 35 through the curved inner edge portions of the upper and lower mold sections. The elastic cord 33 is tensioned to hold the mold sections in frictional and resilient contacting relation and urges the upper and lower sections toward each other at their inner edges while permitting the outer edges to be spread apart for insertion of the hair therebetween.

The main gist of this invention is to provide a sectional hair setting device designed to cause the hair to. be. shaped in upwardly waved form and to permanently retain the hair in this form, when the device is removed from the head after use.

In accordance with the, patent statutes I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can. be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A hair-settin mold, comprising a hollow multi-sectional body of substantially elliptical form, the jimction of said sections being at the inner surface of said elliptical body, each of said sections being independently filled with resilient and compressible material, means attached to the body for securing the end portions of said sections in unitary relation onthe head of a person, said multi-sectional body having a lateral opening extending all around its periphery to permit moistened hair to be folded over the top section into said lateral opening and held therein by the. resiliency of said sections toward each other to retainsaid folded hair for imparting a set wavy form, to said moistened hair, whereby after said mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in the pre-set and waved form.

2. A mold for setting the hair of a person, comprising a hollow body having upper and lower sections of substantially elliptical form, the junction of said upper and lower sections being at the inner surface of said elliptical body, each of said sections being independently filled with resilient and compressible material, means attached to the. body for securing the end portions of said sections in unitary relation on the head of a, person, said body having a lateral opening between said sections and extending all around the outer periphery of said sections to permit moistened hair to be folded over the top section into said lateral opening and held therein by the resiliency of said sections toward each other to retain said hair and impart a set wavy form to said moistened hair, whereby after said mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in pro-set and waved form.

A mold for setting the hair of a person, comprising a hollow body having upper andlower normally linear sections curved into substantially elliptical form, the junction of said upper and lower sections being at. the inner surface of said elliptical body, each of said sections being independently filled with resilient and compressible material, means attached to the body for securing the end portions of said sections in unitary relation on the head of a person, said body having a normally closed formable lateral opening between said sections and extending all around the outer periphery of said sections to permit hair to be folded over the top section and inserted into said formable lateral opening and held therein by the inherent resiliency of said sections toward each other due to the said elliptical curving to retain said hair and impart a set wavy form to said hair, whereby after said mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in pre-set and waved form.

4. A mold for setting the hair of a person, comprising a hollow fabric body having upper and lower normally linear sections curved into substantially elliptical form, the junction of the covering fabric of said upper and lower sections being at the inner surface of said elliptical body, each of said sections being filled with resilient material and being thereby independently resilient and compressible, means attached to the body for securing the end portions of said sections in unitary relation on the head of a person, said body having a normally closed formable lateral opening between said sections and extending all around the outer periphery of said sections to permit hair to be folded over the top section and inserted into said formable lateral opening and held therein by the inherent resiliency of said sections toward each other due to the said elliptical curving to retain said hair and impart a set wavy form to said hair, whereby after said mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in pre-set and waved form.

5. A duplex mold for setting the hair of a person, comprising a hollow fabric body having upper and lower normally linear sections, each filled with inherently extensible compressible elastic material and curved into substantially elliptical form, the covering fabric of said upper and lower sections being joined at the inner surface of said elliptical body and providing a flexible hinge for moving said sections to and from each other, means attached to the body for securing the end portions of said sections in unitary relation on the head of a person, said body having a normally closed formable lateral opening between said sections and an entrance thereto extending all around the outer periphery of said sections to permit hair to be folded over the upper mold section and inserted into said formable lateral opening and held therein by the inherent resiliency of said sections toward each other due to the said elliptical curving to retain said hair in said folded position and impart a set wavy form to said hair, whereby after said mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in pre-set and waved form.

6. A duplex mold for setting the hair of a person, comprising a hollow body having upper and lower sections, each filled with compressible resilient material and curved into substantially elliptical form, said upper and lower sections being joined at the inner surface of said elliptical body and providing a flexible hinge for moving said sections to and from each other, means attached to the body for securing the end portions of said sections in unitary relation on the head of a person, said body having a normally closed lateral opening between said sections and an entrance thereto extending all around the outer periphery of said sections to permit hair to be folded over the upper mold section and inserted into said lateral opening and held therein by the resiliency of said sections toward each other to retain said hair in said folded position and impart a set wavy form to said hair, whereby after said mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in pre-set and waved form.

'7. A duplex mold for setting the hair of a person, comprising a hollow mould-like body having upper and lower substantially flat, flexible sections adapted to be curved into substantially elliptical form, each of said sections being independently filled with resilient and compressible material, said upper and lower sections being joined at the inner surface of said elliptical body so as to provide a flexible hinge all around the inner surface of said body for urging said sections toward each other, means attached to the body for securing the end portions of said sections to retain said body on the head of a person, said body having a normally closed lateral opening between said sections to permit hair to be folded over the upper mold section and inserted between said sections and held therein by the resiliency of said sections toward each other and impart a wavy form to said hair, whereby after said mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in wavy form.

8. A duplex mold for setting the hair of a person, comprising a hollow body having upper and lower sections adapted to be curved into substantially elliptical form, each of said sections being independently filled with resilient and compressible material, said sections being connected at the inner surface of said elliptical body by a circumscribing tie cord, means attached to the body for securing the end portions of said sections, said body being adapted to permit hair to be folded over the upper mold section and inserted between said sections and held therein by said circumscribing tie cord between said mold sections and impart a wavy form to said hair, whereby after said mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in wavy form.

9. A mold for setting the hair of a person, comprising a hollow body having a plurality of upper and lower sections curved into substantially elliptical form, each of said sectionsbeing independently filled with resilient and compressible material, said sections being flexibly connected at the inner surface of said elliptical body by a circumscribing tie cord in a manner to permit movement of said sections at the outer surface thereof, means attached to the body for securing the end portions of said sections to retain said mold on a head, said body permitting hair to be folded over the upper mold section and inserted between said sections and held therein by said circumscribing tie cord between said mold sections to cause a wavy form to be imparted to said hair by the shape of said sections, whereby after said mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in wavy form.

10. A mold for setting the hair of a person, comprising a hollow body having a plurality of upper and lower sections curved into substantially elliptical form, each filled with inherently extensible and compressible means, said sections being elastically connected at the inner surface of said elliptical body while permitting lateral movement of said sections at the outer periphery thereof, means attached to the body for securing the end portions of said sections to retain said mold on a head, said body permitting hair to be folded over the upper mold section and inserted between said sections and held between said sections to cause a wavy form to be imparted to said hair by the shape of said sections, whereby after said mold is removed from the set hair, the hair remains in wavy form.
