Application October 18, 1950, Serial No. 190,764
1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to lariats and more specifically to toy lariats adapted for such use by children that said lariats may constitute parts of cowboy costumes worn by the children, the predominant object of the invention being to provide a toy lariat which is so constructed and arranged that when not in actual use it may be very conveniently suspended from a belt or other part of the costume of a child so as to add to appearance of the costume.
Fig. 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in perspective illustrating the toy lariat of this invention, a part of the lariat being broken away.
Fig. 2 shows the lariat of Fig. 1 as it appears when assembled for suspension from a belt or other article forming a part of the costume worn by a youthful user of the lariat.
In the drawing, wherein is shown for purposes of illustration, merely, one embodiment of the invention, A designates the improved toy lariat generally. The lariat A comprises a length of rope l which is provided at one end with a loop 2, the end portion of the rope part which produces the loop 2 being spliced to a portion of the rope, as is shown at 3 in the drawing, and the rope l being passed through the loop 2 to provide a running noose. At the end of the rope opposite to the end thereof at which the loop 2 is located, a second loop 5 is provided and this second loop also is produced by splicing an end part of the portion of the rope which produces the loop to the rope proper, as is indicated at 6 in the drawing. The splices 3 and 6 are made in a. manner which is well known to persons familiar with the art to which this invention relates, the end parts of the portions of the rope that produce the loops 2 and 5 being interlaced with portions of the rope proper.
The lariat of this invention includes a thong 1, which preferably, though not necessarily, is in the form of a length of buckskin. An intermediate portion 'l of the thong 1 is extended through the splice 6, said thong being threaded between rope strands of which the splice is composed and at opposite sides of the splice 6 the 2 thong has knots 8 tied therein so as to retain the thong in its proper position with respect to the lariat splice and prevent displacement of the thong with respect to said splice.
In the use of the improved lariat of the present invention the lariat may be suspended from the belt or other part of the costume of a user of the lariat. When so supported the lariat coiled as is shown in Fig. 2 and the thong 1 embraces portions of the lariat and is tied thereabout with the loop 5 extending upwardly so that it may be engaged by an article which supports the lariat. Likewise, when it is desired to use the lariat for lassoing purposes the loop 5 is detached from the article which supports the lariat, the thong 1 is untied, Iand the lariat is ready for use.
I claim:
A lariat comprising a length of rope having a loop at an end thereof through which a portion of said rope extends to provide a running noose, a second loop for-med in said length of rope which serves to engage -an article by which the lariat is supported, and tie means for tying the lariat in a coiled condition for support thereof, said tie means comprising a length of flexible material which is attached to the lariat at a point adjacent to the second-mentioned loop, a portion of said length of ilexible material being extended transversely through a portion of said length of rope, and knots tied in said length of ilexible material at opposite sides of said portion of the length of rope through which said portion of said length of exible material is extended.
