' 1 Claim. (01. 155-134) This invention relates to an improved school desk pedestal and seat support.
An'object of this invention is to provide a pedestal and seat supporting structure which will evenly distribute the stresses, so that all portions of the seat supporting structure will take up the stresses.
Another. object of this invention is to provide a pedestal and seat supporting structure which includes a U-shaped member carried by the standard, and a rectangular frame fixed to the upper side of the U-shaped member and adapted to be fixed to the underside of a seat.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved connecting member between the pedestal and the seat so that the latter will be resiliently supported, without, however, losing proper resiliency to insure good posture.
A further object of this invention is to provide a pedestal and seat support which is of'simple construction embodying a lesser number of parts than similar devices now available to thereby reduce the production costs and also reduce the retail costs, and at the same time to provide a sturdy well balanced seat supporting structure.
With the above and other objects in view, my
invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and-then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim. I

Referring to the drawings, and, first, to Figures l to 9, inclusive, the numeral 15 designates generally a, combined seat and back mounted on a pedestal l 6 carried by a, base I l. A desk member I8 is carried by an upwardly and forwardly inclined supporting arm I9 which is secured beneath the seat 20. The combined seat and back member It has secured to the seat member 26 thereof a frame generally designated as 2!.
The frame 2| is substantially rectangular in plan and is formed of parallel side members 22 and 23 and end members 24 and 2-5. The side member 22 is the front side of the supporting frame 2| and is provided with an upwardly projecting flange 26 and a downwardly projecting flange 21. An inner flange 28 also projects upwardly from the front member 22, and the two flanges-26 and 28 are adapted to engage the lower with the lower side of the seat member 20. An
outer depending flange 31 extends substantially in alignment with the outer flange 30. The end member 25 is provided with an inner upwardly projecting'flange 32 and with an upwardly projecting flange 33 at its outer edge.
The flanges 29, '30, 32, and 33 are shaped to conform to the curvature of the seat member 39 and are cut out between the ends thereof as indicated at 29a, 30a, 32a, and 33a respectively, so that the flanges only contact with the seat at the corners ofthe frame. 2|. These cutouts provide spaces between the seat and frame so that the seat and back member which is formed of resilient material may have relative movement with respect to the support 2i. The side member 23 which is a rear side member is provided with a downwardly projecting flange M which merges with flange 3| as indicated at 35.
An additional fastening member 39 extends through the supporting frame 2| at substantially the junction between the rear side member 23 and the end member 24. The pedestal 18 includes a tubular stem 49 having a U-shaped member 4| on the upper end thereof and formed integral therewith. The U-shaped member 4| has one arm 42 thereof secured by fastening means 43 to the lower face of front member 22 and the other arm 45 of the U-shaped member 41 is secured by fastening means 45 to the lower face of the rear side member. 23..
The U-shapedmember 4| includes depending parallel flanges 46 and 41 carried by the arm 42 and also depending flanges 48 and 49 carriedby the arm 44. Arcuate flanges 59-and 5.1 are. carried by the bight 52 of the U-shaped member 41. The U-shaped member 4l also includesa pair of laterally projecting ears. 53 which project from the outer end of the bight 52 and are adapted to be secured as by fasteningzmeans: :4 to the end member 25.
The. desk supporting member 19: includes; an upwardly and forwardly projecting; tubular arm 55. which is carried by. aright angularly. disposed L-shaped member 55. One side 51 of the L-shaped, member 56. is disposed in substantial alignment with the front side member 22 and isprovided with outer and inner flanges 58 and 59. The side 51 of L-shaped member 56 is secured by fastening means 89 to the end member 25. A fastening member 51 also projects through the side 51. and the end member 25 and through the seat 20-. The opposite or other side 52 of. L-shaped member 56 underlies the ears 53 andis secured by fastening means to the end member 25.
A rear fastening member 64 extends through the. rear. end of side. 62 and, through the end member 25. and the seat 20. A depending reinforcing flange 65 is carried by the side. 62 of Leshaped member 56.
Referring now to Figures to 1 3,.inclusive, there is disclosed a modified form of seat supporting frame. generally. designated as 66. The frame 6.5 includesafront side member =61,,a. rear side member 68, and opposite end members 59 and10. The frontmember 61. includes inner and outer. upwardly projecting flanges 1| and 12 which are engageable. with the lower side of the seat-member. 13.. The rear side member 68 bears at its. upper side. against the, lower side of the seat member 13; andis formed at itsrear edge with a dependingflange 14. The front side member: 61 also includes; a depending, flange. .1 5.
The end member 69 includes. an. upwardly projectinginner flange'16 and anupwardlyprojecting outer flange1.1.- Theside member 10,; includes an inner upwardly. projecting flange .18; and an outer upwardly projecting flange 1.9; The end member 69 also includesa depending; reinforcing flange 80- and endmember 10.. also includes a.
depending reinforcing flange 8 1, ing flanges 14 and merge together as indicated at 82. Depending flanges 1B and also merge together as indicated at 83, and flanges 13 and 81 merge together as indicated at B4. Flanges 14 and SI merge together as indicated at 85.
A pair of outwardly projecting ears 8B and 81 project from. the forwardLcorners of. the frame and fastening members 88 extend" through the ears 85 and 81 and the seat member 13. Rear fastening members 89 also extend through the opposite endsof the rear member 68 and the seat member 131 A..U;-.shaped pedestal member 99 carried by tubular stem 91 has the parallel arms 92 thereof securedbyfastening means 93 to the front and rear. members 61 and 68 and the bight 94 of U-member 99 has laterally projecting cars 95 secured by fasteningmeans. 96 tothe end. member 10.
With a seat supporting structure as hereinbefore described a unitary seat and back member may beresiliently supported. in a manner whereby stresses appliedto the back will not be communicated to the supporting structure, andthe latter will form a rigid foundation embodying a minimum of parts, so that the foundation may be easily assembled.
What is claimed is I.
In a seat structure having a base and a pedestal at one side of'the base with a horizontally disposed U-shapedmemb'er on the upper end of the pedestal andan integral seat and back having a degree of' flexibility, a rectangular seat support interposed between said U-shaped member and the seat; said support comprising front and rear members, opposite end members integral with said front and rear members, upstanding flanges carried by said front and opposite end'members, said flanges having cutouts in the upper edges thereof between the ends of each end member whereby said seat is supported only at the four corners of said support and may flex between said corners, outwardly projecting ears disposedat the. junction between said front and opposite end members and having the upper and the dependsurfaces thereof coplanar with the upper edges of saidflangesand. means engaging through said ears and the remaining corners ofv said support securingsaid support to said seat.
