.CORN-SHELLER. i l
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,662, dated January 3, 18 0.: I
. the. drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, is a description thereof so full and exact is to enablethose skilled inthe art to practice our invention.
Figure 1 is a plan of the sheller and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section through it taken in the plane of line 2, z, seen in Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in both figures.
(a) as a metallic casing fixed to and supported by suitable standards (6) rising from the foundation plate (a). Thetube d) which forms part of (a) supports the shaft (e) which carries the balance wheels(;) and (g). To the arms of the shelling disk or cone (h) is fixed or it may be made an integral part of (f). The presser plate fits loosely over theltube (cl) and is prevented from too nearly approaching the shelling wheel by the collar (j). The shelling wheel has suitable teeth or projections upon it as shown in the drawings, and the presser may also be furnished with ridges or asperities to assist in remov- 1n the corn. Fittin loosely over the tube (70% upon shaft (6) is the follower plate (Z) havingsprings (m) fixed to it so that when (Z) is in its place within the casing (a) as shown in the drawings the springs shall press upon the presser-plate (i) and bear it toward the shelling wheel (h) keeping (6) against collar (j). The shaft (6) is made hollow and has within it the. sliding piece (a) in which the screw (0) fits by rotation of which (a) is drawn toward (it). The pin (p) fitting in (n) and passing through slots in the shaft and in thesleeve 7c thereon, bears upon (Z) so that when n is drawn forwardby the action of (0) it will compress the springs m) against plate El) forcin this forward against the ears 0 corn which are interposed between (Z) and (it). Thus it will be seen that by turning the screw (0) inone or the other direction the intensity of the shelling action of the wheel may be increased or diminished ii at pleasure. Thelooseness of the fits of the 1. plates (i) and. (l) over 1 tube (03) and H. sleeve (it) allow both plates pa rticularly z') to yield to the variousdiameters of earsof corn subjected to the action of themachine 3 and alsoto follow the constantly decreasing diameter of each ear fwhilefsubject to the; action ofthe machine. The plate (i) has a concavity formed; fromits face sideat (gl), f 1 which serves asia hopper-into which the, f ears of corn are introduced. f; w I The guard (1") which mayformpart 10f the casing (a) .pro'ectsfrom the central plate (8) of the caslngtowardthe shelling] wheel having suitable spaces cut inits edge to permit )assageof the shelling teeth. The i e casing (al alsoextendsltowardt (h) withzjzo similar spaces cut inits edges. Havin described the construction of our corn-sheller its action nmay be set forth as follows: Rotation being given in the ind cated direction and... anlear of cornf being drop ed into the hoper it is carried by the I rotation of the shel i11 wheel around it (being rotated lonutsyownaxis atthe same time) until the cobstrikes against the 1) uard (7") when it is discharged upwardvgo from the machine entirely cleared fromthe corn even to the point, the shelled Qumran-1 ing into any convenient receptacle placed beneaththemachine.
It should be particularly remarked that i while a looseor f wabblingliand sfel aadf-l justing presser plate acted on floy springs and capable of being regulatedx to pressjwith varied force is commontoiprevious to; shellers, there is in the. present arran ement 0} and combination ofjfparts connecte j with the presser plate (aha Lpeculiar gainiand efficiency by the employinent the follower (Z withits springs (m) made in relationto the shelling wheel centrally ad st b qand the follower plate centrally hung bymeanS of the hollow wheel shaftcgte) @andinter ior screw (0), the same servingitjogive a qst perfect accommodating ationam thepresser plate, and, by. turning the? one screw; equal adjustment ofthe se era1.s rings, andfsaid adjustment being efiectediifrom; the outside or in front of the, feed. (q)fand;;sl1ellin wheel (71,) where itis more conveni tt adjust the action of the presser as it is there to each other and unitedly essentially as 10 that the feeder or operator stands. specified.
What We claim therefore, herein, is:
The combination and arrangement with the loosely hung presser plate (i) and revolving shelling Wheel (h), of the follower plate (Z) with its springs (m), hollow Wheel shaft (6), and centrally arranged regulating screw (0), for operation in relation SETH FLETCHER. JOHN P. PIKE. Witness to S. F.:
