Edward Wfiziercey ATTEI RN EYS i atented Jan. 5, 1 954 UNITED STATES i TENT OFFICE 2,665,152 noon HOOK SAFETY LATCH Edward Wilson Piercey, Bells, Tenn. Application September 29, 1950, Serial No. 187,558
5 Claims. (Cl. 292- 108) This invention relates to hooks of the type used for locking screen doors and the like, and in particular a hook having a shank with a hook formation on one end and an eye on the other and in which a screw eye is extended through the eye and also a screw eye having a latch element thereon which is positioned whereby both the latch element and screw eye receive the hook formation of the shank.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for preventing accidental opening of a hook which also provides locking means to prevent a child opening the hook.
In the conventional type of screen door hook a child often opens the hook and escapes through a screen door or section of a play pen and in numerous instances, where hooks are used to lock doors, particularly where it is desired to have the main door open, a blow on the door locked by the hook causes the hook to jump out of the eye. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a latch provided on the eye provided for receiving a hook and having a slot therethrough whereby, with the hook extended through the eye and slot of the latch the latch may be turned over the hook to positively lock the hook in the eye.
The object of this invention is, therefore, tov
provide latch means on the hook receiving eye of a. screen door hook whereby the hook is positively locked in the eye until manually released.
Another object of the invention is to provide latch means for holding a hook in an eye or other holding means that may be applied to hooks and eyes now in use without changing the design or construction of the hook or eye.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved latch for hooks of the screen door type whereby a hook is positively held in an eye until manually released, which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a plate having an elongated slot therein with a hinged loop provided at one end and with the loop freely mounted on an eye and positioned so that a hook entering the eye passes through the slot of the plate.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view illustrating a hook mounted through a screw eye on a door frame and positioned with the hook extended through the latch element and eye with the eye positioned on the surface of a door or frame, and
with the latch element illustrated in an upwardly extended position in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the hook with the parts in the position illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure} is a front elevational view similar to that shown in Fig. 1 showing the latch in the position of releasing the hook. U
Figure 4 is a plan view showing the elements in the released position.
Figure 5 is a detail illustrating the latch.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the hook latch of this invention includes a plate It] having a roll providing a hub H at one end and an elongated slot I2 therein and, as illus-f trated in the drawing the hub is rotatably mounted on a screw eye I 3 and the eye I3 is positioned to receive a h ook'll on the end of a shank I5, the opposite end'of which is provided with an eye It, and a screw eye I! provides mounting means for the hook and extends through the eye [6.
The latch H] is formed as illustrated in Fig. 5 and with the roll or hub ll positioned around one side of the eye [3, the rounded outer end l8 extends beyond the opposite side of the eye, as shown in Figs. 3 ands. With the latch in this position and with the door closed, the hook I4 is placed through the slot l2 and eye l3, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 whereby the hook holds over the hub H and after the hook is in place in the eye the latch I0 is flipped over to the position shown in Fig. 1 whereby with the hook resting upon the hub II the latch it rests upon the upper surface of the shank [5.
It will be noted that with the hook partly open as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 the latch may be raised upwardly to the position indicated by the dotted lines IS, in Fig. l, but will be prevented from passing over the upper end of the hook formation, the outer end of the slot l2 coming in contact with the surface of the hook.
By this means the latch element is provided on the screw eye that normally receives a hook and in locking the screen door, gate, window or the like, the hook is placed in the eye in the usual manner and the latch moves over so that the free end thereof rests upon the upper surface of the shank of the hook. When it is desired to release the hook the latch is moved over the upper end of the hook from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 3, and with the latch in this position the book may be in-- 3 serted in and removed from the eye in the usual manner.
It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts 4 slot in the plate and engage the hook holding member, and then pivoted to pass over the hook and engage the shank rearwardly of the hook. 4. In a screen door hook latch, the combination without departing from the spirit of the invention. 0 which comprises a shank having an eye on one What is claimed is:

A screen door hook comprising a shank having a hook on one end, means for pivotally mounting the end of the shank opposite, to thatontwhich the k aposi l e nathook holding embe 1 plate having a longitudinally extending 'slot therein, and said plate is provided at one end with a, circular hub for pivotally mounting the said plate on said hook holding member, wherebytsazidtplate may be positioned to overlie the hook,ho1ding member with the elongated slot in 'the plate aligned with the hook holding Pmemberg'isotti'rat; the hook may be passed through the elongated slot in the plate and engages the hookholding member, and then pivoted tolpass over the hook 2 and engage- 'the shank rearward-lyre ithemoek ziA screenfdoorihook compritingaeshanlir-having a hook on one end}meanfiorpivbtitllygmount ing 1 the end a of the shank-1 opposite to that on end and a hook on the other, a screw eye having a loop and a threaded shank positioned with the loop extended through the eye on the end of the shankwof the hook, a hooklreceivingscrew eye 0 havingsa loop 'withralthreaded shank, a latch having an elongated slot therein, and a hub at one .endof said latch for pivotally mounting the said latch on the said hook receiving eye, whereby said mlatemay bepositioned to overlie the hook holding 5 member-with, the lelongatd slot in the plate aligned with'the hook holding member, so that the hook ztmayil-be:passedzthroughathe elongated slot in the plate and.en gage the hook holding member, and then'plvoted to pass over the hook and engage the 0 shank rearwardly of the hook.
