Description

J. THEODOREOHABOT, or BUFFALO, nwronx.
SHIP S Specification of Letters Patent N 0. 26,650, dated January8, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. THEODORE OHABoT, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steering Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked therein, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top side view of the deck V of vessel, illustrating the arrangement of the steering wheel M, connected to a straight tiller E and double blocks y, 3 Fig. 3 the upper and lower shells of block 1 y with strap a. Fig. 2 the upper and lower straps c, a. One way '0, roller w and one block shell 6 and rollers; same letters referring to like partsin all of the drawings.
The nature of my improvements consists in arranging the double blocks y 3 with the sliding block 2?, t, upon the forward end of straight tiller E, moving upon the square surface P, of tillers, as an advantage gained in controlling vessels.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Fig. l the chain makes five turns around the drum L part of which 71, extending downward underneath the friction pulley Z2, passing to the left and around the stationary pulley c, at right angle; also to and around the rear stationary pulley e 8 around the left block y, and united to a stationary point, W, near the sheave 0r pulley e s. The other part of chain K extending downward and underneath its pulley b and to and around the right stationary pulley t a of the stationary block a at a ri ht angle, passing tothe rear parallel with t edeck V, to and around the right stationary pulley e s and toand around the right block 3 and to the right stationary point W. A portion of the chain TILLER.
and lower shell with friction rollers located 1 between, and at each end of the shellst, t,as 5 5 seen in Fig. 2. The block 25,15, isgalso united 1 by an upper and lowerstrap c, c, as also seen in Fig. 2, with the attachment ofthe left j block, 1, and encompassingthe lower shells t l in Fig. 2, and the tillerfcenter beam E, as. also seen in Fi l The upper shell t and strap 0, are united by a center bolt, as well asthe lowershell t and strap 0, separately. I;The screw swivels r, r, may be connectedto thechain ill/and K, at the stationary points W, WgThe upper center bolt has a. frictionroHerCX 1 3 inserted; moving upon: the surface of the. 1 Ways or wayo, which may be united to deck l of vessel, as seen inFig. 2. a l
Operation: The straighttiller is moved right and left by its connection to steering wheel M with chain it rod J, and the other e part K and rodJ, as seen in Fig, 1, arranged underneath the deck V of vessel in part; p a portion of the deck beingleftlofhin order Y 1 to present the same. The double blocks 1} with sliding blockt t, moves right and left upon the surface P of tiller; thereby the tiller E is permitted also to swing left anu right, as indicated by the dotted lines The power oftiller E; or lever is increase i in proportion to thedraft of water upon the rudder blade, as the tilleriis moved either: 1 1 right or left from midship. The rear portions of chain it and K move upon a straight. line, while the movements of tiller E .describe acircle, from the rudder post as its, 1, center. The straight tiller E may be used without the slidingblocks or with the; e 1 sliding blocks j 1 Vhat I claim asmy invention and desire, l to secure by Letters Patent is; a f p l The surface P of the, forward end I of straight tiller E in form representing a allelogram, in combination with the slirii block 2? t and its friction rollers; double h, is may be supplied at the center with the rods J J. The surface of straight tiller bar E, from the point of its connection to the side bars F, F, extending forward to the stay box a, is flattened, forming a parallelogram and for the horizontal movement of the sliding block if t of tiller E. The
block 3 y, lower and upper strap 0,0, with center bolts located at the centerof til E; as described in the foregoingspecifica tion.
