1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in extension lights.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an extension light in which a defective or worn out light bulb may be easily and quickly replaced by a new bulb, without the use of a screw driver or other tool, thus saving valuable time and eliminating the necessity of looking for a screw driver when one is not conveniently at hand.
A further object of my invention is to provide an extension light in which simple clamping means, including a coil spring and co-acting connecting links, are used to fasten the reflector hood and wire guard frame on the bulb socket of the switch carrying head.
With the foregoing and other objects in view that will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, that same consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only and are therefore not drawn to scale:
Figure l is a back elevational view, illustrating the application of my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail fragmentary view of one end of the coil spring and the corresponding connecting link, and associated parts, and Figure 3 is a horizontal transverse section, taken on line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings for a more particulardescription of my invention, and in which drawings like parts are designated by like reference characters throughout the several views, A designates the extension or trouble light, as a whole, comprising the usual reflector hood I, the skeleton wire guard frame situated in front of the reflector hood, and the spherical switch carrying head 3, formed at its outer end with the cylindrical socket 4 for the lamp bulb and at its inner end with the elongated handle 5.
As shown, the inner end of the reflector hood I is provided with a reduced approximately semicircular neck 6, which embraces the outer surface of the cylindrical bulb socket 4, while the inner ends 1 of the longitudinal wires of the guard frame fit in spaced relation around the aforesaid socket in front of the neck 6 of the reflector hood.
The semi-circular neck of the reflector hood I and inner ends I of the longitudinal wires of the guard frame are usually held in position on the cylindrical bulb socket 4 by forming the neck portion 6 of the reflector hood I, at its inner corners, with the outwardly extending ears 9, and employing a clamping band It! to engage the inner ends I of the wires, said clamping band being formed at opposite ends with the outwardly eX- tending ears I I having transverse openings, which ears are disposed directly opposite the ears. 9 to receive the transverse screws I2, The screws I2 have screw threaded engagement with the ears II of the clamping band Ill, but not with the ears 9.
In carrying out my invention, the nuts usually screwed on the shanks of the screws I2 are eliminated and a transverse coil spring I3 is arranged to fit around the inner edge of the semi-circular neck 6 of the reflector hood I and connected at opposite ends, as at I4, by means of the elongated links I 5, with the sleeves I 6 of the outwardly extending diagonally disposed metal finger clips I1, which sleeves fit against the inwardly curved inner ends of the corresponding outwardly extending ears I I of the clamping band.
With, the ordinary extension light now in use, in order to replace a defective or worn out light bulb, with a new bulb, it is necessary to use a screw driver to remove the nuts and screws I2 before the reflector hood and wire guard frame may be removed preparatory to installing a new bulb. However, with the use of my invention, it is only necessary to disconnect the links I5 with the ends of the corresponding ears I I of the clamping band I 0 by means of the diagonally disposed metal clips I7. This not only saves valuable time, but eliminates the need of using a screw driver or losing still more valuable time in looking for a screw driver when. one is not conveniently at hand.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In an extension light, a reflector hood formed at one end with an approximately semi-circular neck to embrace one side of the outer surface of a bulb socket, a clamping band of approximately semi-circular form embracing the opposite outer surface of said socket, the ends of said neck and band being spaced from one another, outwardly extending ears projecting from the ends of said neck and said clamping band in spaced parallelism, screws threaded through the ears of said clamping band transversely thereof, the ears of said neck having openings therein in registry with said screws and of greater diameter than the latter to loosely receive the same, a contractile spring extending partially around said neck, links pivoted at their inner ends to the outer extremities of said spring, said links being of greater transverse Width than the ears of said neck and clamping band and adapted to engage over the same, and metal clips pivotally secured to the outer ends of said links; said links adapted to engage with the ears of said clamping band when said spring is expanded and to lock under tension of said spring with said clamping band ears.
