Description

My invention relates to razors and, more particularly, to razors having cooperating cutting edges movable relatively to each other and preferably operated by an electric motor.
Objects of invention are to provide a razor with cutting edges positioned immediately along the skin-contacting surface of the razor without projecting or moving beyond this surface, thereby to facilitate the cutting of the hairs immediately over the skin, and to make possible an absolutely clean and safe shave.
Other objects are to provide a movable cutter of the razor with grooves crossing the cutting edges obliquely, thereby to urge the hairs into positions crossing the cutting edges in a manner suitable for close shaving, and to avoid hairs being pressed between the skin and the skin-contacting surface of the razor.
Further objects are to provide a simple bearing for rotary movement of cutting edges, to support a part of this bearing resiliently in such a manner that the movable cutting edges can recede under excessive pressure, and thereby to increase the safety of the shaving.
Still other objects are to attain these results with simple and reliable means, and to provide a structure for the razor that can be easily and inexpensively made, assembled. and maintained.
Still other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of an exemplifying embodiment of my invention, from the appended claims and from the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 shows a partly sectional side view of an illustrative embodiment of my invention, the sectionally represented parts being out along the line l-l in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 shows another partly sectional side view of the same embodiment, the sectionally represented parts being out along the line 22 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows a top viewof the same embodiment, a portion of the top wall being out off along the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
These figures represent the embodiment on an enlarged scale.
The shown embodiment has a hollow body 4 which serves as a handle and is open at its upper side. Two walls 5 form extensions of lateral walls of the body t and project beyond its open side. A substantially U-shaped body 5 has legs positioned beween and affixed to the walls 5. The bodies 6 and 6 together constitute a housing which has an upper end formed by a wall 'l of the body 5. This wall has the shape of a cylinder sector or of a half cylinder and has correspondingly shaped outer and inner surfaces. The axis of this cylindrical wall and of its cylindrical surfaces passes through the housing.
A substantially cylindrical member 8 is positioned in the body 5 co-axially with the wall I and is rotatable about the common axis. The bearing for the member may be constituted partly by the wall 5 which the upper portion of the surface of the member 8 fittingly abuts, and partly by a support 9 which has a curved surface fittingly abutting the lower portion of the same surface of the member 8.
The support El may have the shape of a plate extending between the walls 5 and is preferably slidable along these walls. One or several springs ii urge the support 9 toward the member 8. These springs may be affixed to a plate I2 by rivets I 3. The plate I2 is afiixed in and to the housing, for example, to and across the lower end of the body 6.
The wall I has slots 5 which extend in parallel planes perpendicular to the axis of the curvature of this wall. The cross-section of each slot ii is preferably a trapezoid wider at the inner han at the outer side of the wall. The member 8 has annular projections 55 of cross-sections corresponding to the cross-sections of the slots It. These projections fit the slots it and reach as far as the outer surface of the wall 7 whereby the peripheral surface of the projections i5 is flush with the wall i. The projections i5 may form complete rings and, in this case, the support 9 may have grooves fitting the projections. Or the projections may form annular sections extending only as far as necessary to fill the slots it at all times when the member 8 oscillates about its axis.
The longitudinal outer edges of the slots M are sharpened to form cutting edges of the wall 1. The adjacent edges of the projections iii are sharpened to form cutting edges cooperating with the cutting edges of the wall 1.
Each projection i5 is provided with one or several grooves It in its outer surface. The grooves IE cross the slots M from one cutting edge to the other in directions slightly oblique with respect to these cutting edges and may extend along portions of helical lines about the axis of the member 8. The member 8 may form a tube, and. the grooves it may be cut through the entire thickness of the wall of this tube whereby these grooves form slots in the upper portion of the member 8. These slots allow hair cuttings to drop into the interior of the member :3 where they do not interfere with further cutting operation.
The described razor operates as follows:
The cable i8 is connected to a current source whereupon the motor ll rotates the shaft It and the pin 22. The pin movement causes the member 8 to oscillate whereby the cutting edges of the projections it slide to and fro along the cutting edges of the wall I.
The outer surface of this wall is moved closely along the surface of the skin to be shaved. The hairs projecting from this skin enter the grooves and are forced by the moving walls of these grooves into directions crossing the cutting edges. The tips of the hairs project into the grooves. The crossing points with the cutting edges are close to the skin. These edges cut the hairs at these crossing points. Hence, the shaving is very clean.
I desire it understood that my invention is not confined to the particular embodiment shown and described, the same being merely illustrative, and that my invention may be carried out in other ways within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or my invention, as it is obvious that the particular embodiment shown and described is cult one of the many that may be employed to attain the objections of my invention.
Having described the nature of my invention,
what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A razor comprising a housing having an end wall with an outer surface forming a sector of a cylinder of which the axis passes through said housing, said wall having slots perpendicular to said axis and having cutting edges extending along said slots; a member rotatable in said nous-- ing about said axis and having annular projeetions reaching into and fitting the cross-sections of said slots, said projections having cutting edges contacting said cutting edges of said well; and means to rotate said member.
2. A razor comprising a housing having an end wall with an outer surface forming a sector of a cylinder of which the axis passes through said housing, said wall having slots perpendic' r to said axis and having cutting edges extending along said slots; amember rotatable in said housing about said axis and having annular projections reaching into and fitting the cross-sections of said slots, said projections having cutting edges contacting said cutting edg'es of said wall; and means to rotate said member oscillatingly.
3. A razor comprising'a housing having an end wall with an outer surface forming a sector of a cylinder of which the axis passes through said housing, said wall havingfslots perpendicular to said axis and having cutting edges extending along said slots; a member rotatable in said housing about said axis and having annular projections fitting the cross-sections of said slots, said projetcions having grooves extending obliquely across said slots in the outer surfaces of said projections and cutting edges extending along said grooves contacting said cutting edges of said wall, and means to rotate said member.

A razor comprising a housing having an end wall forming a sector of a cylinder of which the axis passes through said housing, said wall having slots perpendicular to said axis and having cutting edges extending along said slots; a substantially cylindrical member positioned in said housing, having an axis coinciding with said first mentioned axis, abutting said wall and having annular projections reaching into and fitting the cross-sections of said slots, said projections having cutting edges contactin said cutting edges of said wall; a support positioned in said housing and having a cylindricaliy curved surface abutting that side of said member which opposite to said Wall whereby said member is rotatably confinedbetween said well and said support; and means to rotate said member.
5. A razor comprising a housing having an end wall forming a sector of a cylinder of which the axis passes through said housing, said wall having slots perpendicular to said axis and having cutting edges extending along slots; a sub stantially cylindrical member positioned in said housing, having an axis coinciding with said first mentioned axis, abutting said wall and having annular projections reaching into and fitting the cross-sections of said slots, said projections having cutting edges contacting said cutting edges of said wall; a support positioned and movable in said housing and having a cylindrieally curved surface abutting that side of said member which is opposite to said wall whereby said member is ro-tatably confined between said wall and said support; resilient means to said housing and urging said support toward said member; and means to rotate said member.
6'. A razor comprising a housing having an end wall, said wall having parallel slots of trapezoid cross-section and having cutting edges extending at the outer surface of said wall along said slots; a member movable in said housing in the direction of said slots and having projections of trapezoid cross-section reaching into and fitting the cross-sections of said slots, said projections having cutting edges contacting said cutting edges of said wall; and means to oscillate said member.
7. A razor comprising a housin having an end wall with an outer surface curved an axis passing through said housing, said wall having slots of trapezoid cross-section positioned along parallel arcs about said axis, said wall having cutting edges extending along said slots; a mem-- ber rotatable in said housing and having annular projections reaching into and fitting the crosssections of said slots, said projections having cutting edges contacting said cuttin edges of said wall; and means to rotate said member.
