Damn STATES ATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. GRISWOLD, OF POTTERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
CORKSCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part .of Letters Patent No. 266,135, dated October 1'7, 1882.
Application filed September 2, 1882.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GRIswoLn, of Pottersville, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Corkscrew, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved corkscrew which can be folded very compactly, and can also he used as a key-ring or drawer and door fastener.
Theinvention consists in acorkscrewformed of a screw attached to a block mounted to slide on the shanks of a U-shaped frame, which shanks have their ends bent upward and outward to form spring-loops, which serve as a handle for the corkscrew, and which can also be used as key-rings.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in' which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of my improved corkscrew, showing it in position for use. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, showing the screw withdrawn. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same.
A U-shaped spring-frame, A, has its shanks B bent outward and toward the closed end of the frame in such a manner that the free ends of the said curved shanks rest against the ends of the closed end of the frame, whereby springloops 0 will be formed. The shanks are provided at the free ends with heads or buttons, or are turned to form ornamental ends, as shown. The straight parts of the shanks of the frame pass through two transverse end eyes in a block, D, to which a screw, E, is attached in such a manner that it projects from the said block in the direction from the closed toward the open end of the frame A.
If the corkscrew is not in use, the block D (No model.)
is pushed toward the closed end of the frame A, so that the screw E will be within the frame I A and cannot injure the person carrying it.
If the corkscrew is to be used. the block D is moved toward the open end of the frame A, so that the screw E projects from the open end of the said frame and can be screwed into a cork. The fingers are placed into the loops 0 to withdraw the cork. If the device is screwed into a door or drawer, it can be used as a fastener. Keys can be passed into the springloops 0, so that the device can be used as a key-rin g. The free ends of the shanks press against the block D when the screw E is withdrawn, and hold the block D and the screw E in place, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my inv'ention,l
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A corkscrew made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a screw attached toa block sliding on the shanks of a U-shaped frame, as set forth.
2. In a corkscrew, the combination, with a U-shaped frame having the ends of the shanks bent upward to form spring-loops, of a sliding screw mounted on the shanks of the frame, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
8. In a corkscrew, the combination, with the U-shaped frame A, having its shanks curved outward and upward to form spring-loops O at the sides'of the frame A, of the sliding block D, mounted on the shanks of the frame A, and of the screw E, attached to the block I), substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE W. GRISWOLD.
