A 77' IPA/5K Patented Nov. 17, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,659,085 BRAssmnE Hilda 'Ericson; Youngstown ohio Applieation August 9, 19-51 SerialNo. 241.079 ioiaim. (01. 2- 42) This invention relates to improvements in brassieres and relates more particularly to brass-ieres of the type which support the breasts in youthful form.
The problem of providing effective Supporting and shaping means for the breasts has existed from the dawn of history. In the most primitive form, bandages were utilized to support and attempt to control the shape of the breasts. These were displaced in turn by the more common brassieres formed of fabric and formed of several sections of fabric material assembled with a plurality of seams an attempt to provide suitable supporting media for the breasts and at the same time desirably shape the same. e v
Brassieres have" been heretofore armed of combinations of fabric and rubber-like materials and have taken many and various shapes including those incorporating stays or similar semirigid elements to effect the desirable shaping and supporting of the breasts. Such brassieres have been relatively satisfactory in use but have had the disadvantage of tending to lose their shape :and to shrink or stretch as the case may be due to frequent laundering. Such brassieres as have been heretofore proposed rapidly lost their desired shape and supporting ability and required :frequent replacement. The present invention provides a brassiere which obviates or minimizes the defects of the brassieres presently used and at the same time presents novel advantages in addition to being relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and easy to clean for reuse.
The brassiere in accordance with the present invention is preferably in the form of a desirably :shaped latex sheath which is stretchable to enclose the breasts of the wearer when positioned about the body. When positioned on the body, the suitably formed latex sheath supports the breasts by elevating the same and at the same time causes their constriction and moulding to the desired shape and in accordance with the shape of the latex sheath thereby giving the wearer the smoothness of line and contour which is much desired.
Th brassire formed in this manner is in fact so flexible that even by touch it is not easily revealed that the user is wearing a figure controlling brassiere and, additionally, the support realized is in accordance with the objects of the brassiere. The invention therefore provides a supporting and shaping brassiere in which the filmlike material of the brassiere is of suflicient thickness to constitut a firm support for the breasts 2 of the wearer and of a form to suitably s ape the same in a yield ng and desirable manner.
The invention further provides improvements applicable to such brassieres in providing the sev- 'eral portions of the brassiere with perforations rendering the same more comfortable in use.
In the preferred form of the invention the entire front portion o-f the brassiere is made of socalled deposited liquid latex, that is to say, a film which is produced in the shape of the article by dipping a form into liquid latex; or the film is otherwis deposited directly from liquid latex as contrasted with ordinary crude rubber which is produced by dehydrating liquid latex to form;- crude rubber; then masticating the crude rubber and thereafter forming the article therefrom.
In the preferred form of the invention the 'sideward extensions of the brassiere which extend from the sides of the wearer and across the back thereof are preferably formed of fabric and provided with complementary fasteners at their outermost ends so that the sheath-like brassiere may be formed thereby, The invention contemplate the formation of the entir brassiere from latex with or without the fasteners and in the form of a split sheath or a unitary sheath as desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in th combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being the intention to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the invention herein chosen for purposes of the disclosure, which do not constitut departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a brassier embodying the present invention showing the same in position on a wearer.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the brassiere with parts broken away.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the brassire with parts broken away.
By referring to the drawings and Figure 1 in particular it will be seen that a brassire formed in accordance with the objects of the invention has been disclosed and comprises a form-fittin sheath like member I 0 having a pair of breast pockets I ll| formed therein, The lower edge of the sheath like member 10 is preferably formed with a longitudinally straight edge [2 whil the upper edge thereof curve upwardly and inwardly from side sections l3l 3 to form a pair of curved sections I i-I4 spaced with respect to one another and with respect to the center section of the sheath like member ID.
The breast pockets HH are formed in the member H3 in the areas of the curved sections l4 and are of desirable shape and size, as best illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings. The breast pockets ll-H are provided with a plurality of perforations l5 and in the preferred form of the brassiere a band-like pattern of per forations i6 is formed inwardly from the lower longitudinal edge of the member 10.
In the form of the brassire illustrated and described herein the outermost side sections I3 of the member are provided with extensions l1--l1 of fabric or other similar material which are in turn provided with complementary fasteners Iii-l8 on their outermost ends thereby enabling the sheath like brassiere to be formed when the same are engaged.
Straps I8-l9 are afiixed one to each of the uppermost portions of the upwardly curving sections I4I4 and their opposite ends are secured to the extensions 11-". The straps l9i9 preferably incorporate adjustable means enabling their lengths to be individually adjusted.
The entire sheath like member ID is preferably formed of moulded latex and. is, therefore, capable of suitably enclosing and supporting and shaping the breasts of the wearer in accordance with the objects of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A brassiere comprising a frontal portion formed as a single unit of deposited latex and consisting entirely of thin film-like sheet material which is soft and elastic, said frontal por- 4 tion having a horizontal lower edge straight throughout its length and vertical end edges, the upper edge of the said frontal portion extending at an upward incline from upper ends of the end edges of the frontal portion and merging into intermediate portions extending at a downward incline towards each other and intersecting midway the length of the frontal portion and thereby providing upwardly tapered portions disposed in side by side relation to each other, said tapered portions and portions of the said frontal portion directly under them being projected forwardly and forming forwardly tapered elastic pockets, said pockets each having a multiplicity of perforations therein arranged in a group occupying a major portion of the area of the pocket, said frontal portion being provided below the pockets with horizontal rows of perforations extending a major portion of the length of the said frontal portion, fabric strips secured along end edges of said frontal portion and extending rearwardly therefrom, and interengaging fasteners at rear ends of said fabric strips.
