H. A. WILLIAMS 8v W.- A. PRESTON.
. `GUTTLR BAR. 4 l No. 265,906. l Patented Oot.10, 1882.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. WILLIAMS AND WILLIAM A. PRESTON, OF PRINCETON, INDIANA; SAID WILLIAMS ASSIGNOR TO SAID PRESTON.
CUTTER-BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent No. 265,906, dated October 10, 1882.
Application tiled May 9, 1%2. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that we, HENRY A.WILLIAMS and WILLIAM A. PRESTON, of Princeton, in the county ot' Gibson, and in the State of Indi- 5 ana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gutter-Bars; and we do hereby ticolare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letio ters of reference marked thereon, making a part ofthis specification.
rlhis invention has for its objects to provide certain means whereby the knives or cutters may be secured to the cutter-bar of a harvester in a convenient and reliable manner. These objects we attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a top view ot' a cutterbar showing our invention; Fig. 2, a longizo tudinalsection ot' the same; and Fig. 3, aseotional view of the eye portion ot' the cutter and a portion ot' the bar, showing both in one piece.
The letter A indicates the cutter-bar, which is provided with recesses B at suitable distances apurt, having undercut sides for the reception of thev shanks ot' the cutters or knives G, which are beveled at their edges so as to tit under the undercut sides of the recesses. The
3o bar is provided with alongitudinal groove, D,A
which contains a bar, E, which is also provided with recesses E', having undercut sides corresponding to the recesses in the cutter-bar. The cutter-bar, near one end, is provided with a nut or screw-threaded bearing, F, through which passes a set-screw, G, which is adapted to bear upon the end ot' the longitudinal bar E. The opposite end, E2, of the bur is screwthreaded and provided with a nut,lI, as shown.
The letter I indicates the head ot' the cutter- 4o bar, which is provided with an eye-,rand which may be made separately or in one piece with said bar, as may prove convenient. The said head is recessed at L, so as to titover the screw nut, and it projects beyond the end ot' the bar, 45 so as to protect the setscrew from dirt and injury. The knives or cutters are held to their seats by forcing the longitudinal bar forward and holding it by means of the set-screw and nut, the undercutrecessesin the said bar hind- 5o ing the cutters to their seats. The cutter-bar is provided with a plate, M,which sets over the end E2 of the longitudinal bar and holds it in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
ln a cutter-bar, the combination, with the longitudinallygroovedand transversely recessed main bar, provided with a head made 6o integral therewith, and having an overhanging portion, of the adjusting screw or bolt and its bearing, whereby the binding-bar is protected, as set forth, and made to bind and hold the knives, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we at'liX our signatures, in presence otl two witnesses, this 24th day of March, 1882.
HENRY A. WILLIAMS. WILLIAM A. PRESTON.
litnesses E. E. WILKINsoN, ROBERT ERVIN.
