Description
NOV. 10, 1953 OSAKA COMBINATION HOLDER Filed May 3, 1952 iatentecl Nov. 10, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION HOLDER Rikijiro Osaka, New York, N. Y.
Application May 3; 1952, Serial No. 285,867
(01. ISO-34) 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to combination holders adapted to be carried in the pocket in the manner of a fountain pen with a pocket clip, or otherwise, and the main object is the provision of a new and improved combination holder for, say, a comb and toothpicks, including a larger or longer pocket for the comb and a smaller pocket for the toothpicks, the latter pocket comprising itself a holder which may be readily removed from the main holder and as readily reinserted thereinto.
Another object of the invention is to provide efficient releasable means for locking the removable holder or pocket in the main holder.
It is also an object of the invention to construct the combination holder in such a manner that it may largely be manufactured out of a simple fiat pattern.
The above as well as additional and more specific objects will be clarified in the following description, wherein characters of reference refer to like-numbered. parts in the accompanying drawing. It is to be noted that the drawing is intended solely for the purpose of illustration, and that it is therefore neither desired nor intended to limit the invention necessarily to any or all of the exact details of construction shown or described except insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.
Referring briefly to the drawing,
Fig. l is a perspective view showing one form of the combination holder, as it is normally carried by the user.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the smaller pocket or holder only partway inserted into its recess on the main holder, and with the flap thereof open, as well as showing the flap of the comb pocket open.
Fig. 3 is an exploded perspective view showing the two flat patterns, partly folded, out of which the combination holder of Fig. 1 may be formed.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of the combination holder, as it is normally carried by the user.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is an exploded perspective view showing the two flat patterns, partly folded, out of which the combination holder shown in Fig. 4 may be formed.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of an alternative partly folded fiat pattern out of which the main holder of the combination holder shown in Fig. 1, may be formed.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of an alternative partly folded fiat pattern out of which the main 2 holder of the combination holder shown in Fig. 4, may be formed.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral HI indicates the main holder which comprises the back member H and the front wall member [2-, forming the pocket 13 adapted to receive a comb. or the like 14. A closure flap 8% is an extension of the back it and is provided with a female snap button member [6 engageable with the male member H on the pocket wall 52, to close the pocket [.3 over the comb.
Utilizing the lower portion of the wall l2 as a back member, a second pocket 18 is formed by providing a shorter front pocket wall is attached or sewed around its edges to the member HE. A small holder 20, adapted to contain toothpicks or the like, is provided in the form of a pocket having a snap button fiap 2i bearing the female snap portion 22, the complementary male snap portion 23 being provided on the wall 59. To releasably lock the pocket 20 in the pocket it, the flap 2| is turned down and the snap member 22 thereon is engaged with the snap member 23 on the wall I9. The pattern member Illa in Fig. 3 may be used to form the main holder ill of Figs. 1 and 2, as is readily apparent, by folding the portions thereof to form the finished holder and sewing along the appropriate edges; the parts of Fig. 3 which form the corresponding parts of the finished holder of Figs. 1 and 2 bear the same reference numerals followed by the sufiix a.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the final combination holder is identical to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with the exception that the male snap button member 232) of the flap 2th of the removable holder is attached to the front wall IQ?) of the removable pocket 20?), and an opening 24 is provided through the front wall 25 of the latter through which the male member 231) is projected when the removable holder or pocket 2% is positioned in the pocket 1%. Then, to lock the holder 20b in the pocket Nib, the flap 2 lb is folded down and the female snap member 22b is snapped on the protruding male member 231). In this case, also, the front wall 1% extends only partway down from the top of the back Mb.
Fig. 6 shows how the main holder of Fig. i, that is, all but the removable pocket or holder 2%, may be formed of the single pattern lilo (at the left), and at the right it shows how the removable holder 20b may be formed of the pattern 200.
Fig. 7' shows an alternative pattern out of which the main holder of Figs. 1 and 2 may be formed, and Fig. 8 shows an alternative pattern out of which the main holder of Fig. 4 may be formed.
In all the views, where a reference numeral is followed by a suffix such as b, c, d" or e, such numerals refer to the same or equivalent parts of the finished combination holders of Figs. 1, 2, or 3.
It is apparent that the various Patterns illustrated would serve to form the various holders or holder parts in a very simple manner, by sewing or otherwise attaching appropriate edges toether.
Obviously, modifications in form or structure may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
If it is desired to carry the combination holder in the pocket of a coat in the fashion of a fountain pen, a clip 26 of standard construction may be provided on the back of the back member II or llb, near the upper end thereof.
I claim:
A combination holder comprising an elongated back member having a shorter front wall of like width secured around the edges thereof to the back member except for the top edge thereby forming a pocket open at the top, said back member extending above said top edge thereby forming a pocket flap adapted to fold down over the top of said front wall, means for releasably looking said fiap against said front wall in folded down position of the flap, a second front wall of the same width as said first front wall but having a substantially shorter length than the first front wall attached around the edges thereof to the corresponding edges of the lower portion of said back member except for the top edge of said second front wall thereby providing a second and smaller pocket, a removable holder having a pocket therein insertible into said smaller pocket, said removable holder having a cover flap thereon adapted to be folded down over the top of said second front wall, and means for releasably locking said second front wall and said last-named flap together when said removable holder is positioned in said second pocket, said last-named means comprising a female snap button on said last-named flap and a male snap button on the front of said removable holder, said second front wall having an opening therethrough, said male snap button projecting through said opening and being engageable by said female snap button of said last-named flap.
