HANDSAW LEVEL Filed March 13, 1952 Fig. 4.

Patented Oct. 20, 1953 UNITED STATES TNT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in level attachments and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a level attachment for hand saws, whereby the saw may be guided to out work perfectly true.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a hand saw level that is so mounted on the hand gripping portion of a saw as to permit the user of the saw to clearly observe the level during use of the saw.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hand saw level that is extremely small and compact in structure and which is quickly and readily applied to or removed from the hand gripping portion of a saw in a convenient manner.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a hand saw level that is simple and practical in construction, reliable in use, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a hand saw showing the invention mounted thereon;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the present invention;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of Figure 1; and,
Figure 4 is a plan view of Figure 3 and showing the users hand engaged with the hand gripping portion of the saw.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I9 represents a casing having an open bottom through which a spirit level [2 is received to be suitably secured within the casing and in registry with an opening M in the upper wall of the casing.
A pair of flat longitudinal ears l6 and 18 are integrally formed with opposite sides of the casing and extend throughout the length of the casing. The ears it are coplanar and include apertures 29 for receiving fasteners, whereby the casing may be secured to the hand gripping portion 22 of a hand saw 24.
The ends of the casing ill are integrally formed with a pair of spaced parallel end cars 28 that are flush with the end walls of the casing. The cars 26 extend between and are permanently connected to the ends of the long ears l8, l8. Ears 28 are disposed perpendicular to the ears I6, 18, and include fastener receiving apertures 28. The ears 26 together with the cars I6, 18 form a channel and the edges of all ears are smoothly curved or convex to avoid sharp edges.
The hand gripping portion 22 of the saw 24 is formed with a V-shaped notch or recess 30 upon whose forward wall the ears I E; and I8 rest. Fasteners 32 extend through the apertures 20 and into portion 22 and additional fasteners 34 extend through apertures 28 and into the sides of the hand gripping portion, to support the level unit whereby it may be easily viewed by a user whose hand grips portion 22.
Obviously, the casing may be formed of any suitable material with the cars It and i8 and 26 integrally formed with the casing during the molding thereof. v
In use, the bubble when centered in the spirit level will permit the saw to be retained plumb so that a straight and true cut may be made with the saw.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a hand saw having a hand grip with an upper v -shaped recess, a casing removably secured to the hand grip within the recess and having an open bottom, laterally projecting ears integrally formed with the ends of the casing and removably secured against opposite sides of the hand grip, and a spirit level mounted in the casing through said open bottom, said casing having an upper wall provided with an opening in registry with the level.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein the casing is secured to the forward wall of the recess with the opening therein facing rearwardly to be easily viewed by a user.
3. A hand saw level comprising an elongated casing having a longitudinal opening therein, a spirit level within the casing in registry with the opening, a pair of flat relatively thin coplanar ears extending longitudinally of the casing and permanently attached to opposite sides of the casing, said ears each having a fastener receiving aperture therein, and a pair of relatively thin spaced parallel attaching ears formed with the ends of the casing and extending between and joining the ends of the first named ears and having fastener accommodating apertures, said parallel ears being disposed perpendicular to the coplanar ears and extending on the opposite side of the first named ears from said casing.
