Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
JACOB B. CORNELL, JACOB B. ZOOK, AND BYRON N. CORNELL, F GOSHEN,
' INDIANA.
PAINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,389, dated October 3, 1882.
Application filed July 29,1882. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB B. CORNELL, JACOB B. Zoom and BYRON N. CORNELL, all citizens of the United States, residents of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable 1mprovement in Paints; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same.
This invention has relation to fire-proof and water-proof paints; and it consists in providing a composition of thefollowing ingredients, compounded together in the proportions and according to the method hereinafter set forth. Take two pounds of aspbaltum, two pounds of gutta-percha, (or chip rubber,) two gallons of carbolic acid, ten pounds of the oxide ot'iron, twenty pounds of asbestus, fifteen pounds of slate-dust, (or marble-dust) two pounds of carbon bisulphide, four gallons ofjapan, fortyfive gallonsof coal-tar, and mix them together, sometimes adding two pounds of creosote. These ingredients are mixed together in the following manner: Dissolve the 'gutta-percha orchip-rubberin the bisulpllide of carbon. Add
to this the asphaltum, and. then the carbolic acid. Pour this mixture into the coal tar. Then heat this mixture, and while hot add the oxide of iron, next the asbestus, and then the.
slate or marble dust. If creosote is desired to The mixture should be kept hot from the first heating until the paint is fully compounded and completed.
Suitable coloring-matter may be introduced when desired.
The compound thus produced forms the basis ofa substantial and serviceable paint, which is both fireproof and water-proof. 4.0
The proportions stated may be varied somewhat without departing from the invention, as the character of the resulting compound will not be materially altered thereby.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, IS
The paint consisting of the following 153% dients, viz: asphaltum, gutta-percha,(or chiprubber,) carbolic acid, oxide of iron, asbestus, 5o slate-dust, (or marble-dust,) carbon bisulphide, japan, and coal-tar, compounded together substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
