UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CAM-LEVER CONTROLLED, SLIDABLE JAW WRENCH WITH TOGGLE LOCKING MEANS 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in camlever controlled, slidable jaw wrenches with toggle locking means, and is a variation from the devices disclosed in my Patents No. 2,587,673 and 2,605,663.
The invention has for its object to provide a device of the type having a, minimum of parts, an economy of manufacture and a smooth operation not obtainable in the use of similar structures in the prior art,
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel mechanism connecting a pivoted jaw and a lever including an eccentric movable in an arcuate slot.
Other and further objects of the invention will be apparent as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanyingr drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a view in eleva-tion of a pivoted jaw wrench embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the rear edge of the same.
Fig. 3 is a View in elevation taken from the handle side of the device.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in elevation showing the lever and pivoted jaw in open position.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section showing one form of threaded means.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral In refers to the device generally having a handle member II bored longitudinally at i2 to accommodate the bolt I3 which is integral with the movable member I4. The said bolt I3 is in mesh with the knurled nut I5 accommodated in the recess at I6 of the handle I I. The handle has a longitudinal slot at I1 thereof which accommodates the guide portion I8 integral with and underlying the movable member I4. The guide portion I8 has a pin I9 journalled therein as a pivot for the lever 20 which latter is provided with a relatively wide slot 2| having a ninety degree arc and a radial circular projection 22 therein. The slot 2| receives an eccentric element 23 which journals a pivot pin 24 in its rounded end 25, and which has a dished end at 26 bearing on the radial projection 22 and slidable therearound. The eccentric 23 is shaped to nest exactly in each end of the slot 2l to limit movement of the lever 20. The pivot pin 24 is fixed in the shank 21 of the movable jaw 28. A xed jaw 29 is angularly disposed at the end of the handle member I I. A second longitudinally disposed slot 30 is provided in the handle II and permits longitudinal sliding movement of the pin 24 fixed on shank 21 of the movable jaw 28,
In Fig. 5 is shown a threaded handle assembly as disclosed in my pending application Ser. No. 4,977.
A rod spring 3| is iixed to a pin 32 on the movable body member I4 and normally exerts a pressure against a pin 33 on the shank 21 tending to maintain the jaw 28 in extended position.
A pin 35 acts as a guide for the rear edge 36 of the shank 21. It will be understood that the mechanism may be suitably encased.
In use, the knurled nut I5 may be manipulated to extend or withdraw the movable pivoted jaw 28. This is done with the lever 20 in open position as shown in Fig. 4. The lever may then be closed. During this operation the eccentric 23 pivots on the pin 24 as it slides through the arc of the slot 2I to nest in the outer end thereof clamping the jaw 28 in closed position. The eccentric 23 pivots slidingly about the radial projection 22.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of lthe invention, within the scope of the appended. claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A pivoted jaw wrench including a handle portion, a iixed jaw integral therewith, a member movable longitudinally on said handle portion, a lever pivoted on said movable member, said lever having a ninety degree arcuate slot therein, a circular radial projection within said slot, said handle member having a longitudinal slot therein, a movable jaw, a shank integral therewith, a pivot pin for the shank slidable in said longitudinal slot, means pivoted on said pin within said arcuate slot in sliding contact with said longitudinal slot, spring means for normally maintaining said movable jaw in extended position, and threaded means for adjusting said movable member longitudinally of said handle portion.
2. A pivoted jaw wrench including a handle portion, a xed jaw integral therewith, a member movable on said handle portion, a lever pivoted on said movable member having an arcuate slot therein, a circular radial projection within said slot, said handle member having a longitudinal slot therein, a movable jaw, a shank integral therewith, a pivot pin for the shank slidable in said longitudinal slot, an eccentric pivoted on said pin Within said arcuate slot in sliding contact with said longitudinal slot, the said eccentric having a concave end recess slidable about and conforming to said radial projection, a guide retain- 3 ing the rear edge of said movable jaw, spring means for normally maintaining the movable jaw in extended position, and means for adjusting said movable member longitudinally of said handle portion.
3. A pivoted jaw wrench including a handle portion, alxedjavv` integral therewith, a member movabled longitudinally on said handle portion, a lever pivoted on said movable member, said lever having a ninety degree arcuate slot therein adjacent its pivot point, a circular radial projection Within said slot, said handle 'member having a longitudinal slot therein, a movable jaw, la shank integral therewith, a pivot pin for the shank slidable in said longitudinal slot, an eccentric pivoted on said pin Within said arcuate slot in sliding con- Y tact with said longitudinal slot, the said eccentric having a concave end recess slidable about and 4 conforming to said radial projection, a guide pin retaining the rear edge of said movable jaw, spring means for normally maintaining the movable j aw in extended position, and threaded means for adjusting said movable member longitudinally of said handle portion CLARENCE E';
