This invention relates to locking devices for use With standard latches of the type commonly used on swinging windows and has for an object to provide a compact locking device of the above type which can be installed readily and is dependable in operation.
Another object is to provide a lock for the above purpose which is spring biased in unlocked position, but is automatically locked upon being pressed into position to secure the latch.
Other objects will be apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed.
The nature of the invention will be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which certain specific embodiments are shown for purposes of illustration.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a locking device embodying the present invention as applied to a window;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 4 and 5 are sections taken on the lines 4-4 and 5 5 respectively of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 7 is a front elevation similar to Fig. 1 of a lock illustrating another embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 8 is a vertical section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. '7;
Fig. 9 is a vertical section taken on the line' 9-9 of Fig. 8;
Fig. 10 is a horizontal section taken on the line I0I0 of Fig. 7;
Fig. 11 is a longitudinal section through a lock illustrating a further embodiment of the invention; and
Fig. 12 is a section taken on the line I2-I2 of Fig. 11.
Referring to the drawings more in detail the lock is shown in Figs. 1 to 6 as applied to a case-1 which is attached to the bar I2 by screws I9 and carries a pair of pins 2I. A housing 22 is provided with recesses 23 sliding on said pins and spring-pressed outwardly by springs 24 seated around bosses 25 in which said recesses are formed. The outward movement of the housing 22 is limited by pins 26 which slide in recesses 2l in the sides of the pins 2I.
The base plate 20 is notched as shown at 30, Fig, 4, to receive the latch finger I6 and one side of the housing 22 formed with a notch 3| to receive the latch finger I6 when in latched position. When the housing 22 is in its retracted position the bottom of the housing clears the latch iinger to permit free operation thereof, but when the housing 22 is in its advanced position the notch 3I spans the latch finger and prevents actuation thereof.
The housing carries a lock barrel 33 in which a key actuated lock cylinder 34 is mounted for rotation. The cylinder 34 and barrel 33 are of standard construction and are designed to lock the cylinder to the barrel or release the cylinder by means of a key. The lock cylinder 34 is keyed by a tongue 35 to a bar 36 having apertures 31 to receive the pins 2 I, said apertures having edges extending through slots 38 in the bosses 25 and engaging beneath shoulders 40 on the pins 2I to lock the bar 36 and housing 22 in advanced position. The bar 3B is spring-biased in locking Yposition by a spring 4I seated between the housing 22 and an ear 42 on the bar 36 and is retracted upon rotation of the lock cylinder 34 when released by the key.
Invorder to lock the device in latch securing position it is only necessary to press the housing 22 to its advanced position against the force of the springs 24. When the bar 36 passes the shoulders 40 on the pins 2I it snaps into locking position due to to the spring 4I. The lock cylinder may be of the type which automatically locks to the barrel when rotated into the position indicated above or may be locked thereto by withdrawal of the key. In either case the latch cannot be actuated until the housing has been released by rotation of the lock cylinder to retract the bar 36 from the shoulders 4I] of the pins 2l and retracted by springs 24.
In the embodiment of Figs. '7 to 10 the window sash, frame and latch are similar to that above described. The locking device comprises a stud 50 having ears 5I secured to the fixed bar I2 by screws or rivets 52. A housing 53 is provided with side walls 54 which slide on opposite sides of the stud 50. A pin 55, secured in the side walls A, extends through a slot 56 to limit the movement of the housing 53. The side walls are formed with notches 51 to span the ears 5I of the stud 50 and with a notch 50 to span the latch nger I6 when the housing is seated against the bar I2.
The housing 53 also carries ya lock comprising a barrel 6I fixed to the housing having a key actuated cylinder 62 thereinconnected to a-ctuate a pawl 63 which is pivoted at 64 to the barrel 6I and Yenters a notch 55 in the side of the stud 50 when in locking position. The lock barrel,
cylinder and pawl are of standard construction n in which the pawl 63 is spring-pressed into the notch 65 and is retracted by rotation of the keyactuated cylinder 62. Since the locking mechanism is well known it is not shown in Vdet-ail herein.
The housing 53 is urged upwardly toward retracted position by a spring 66 seated in a recess -61 therein and seatedron .the -stud5ll.
The operation of this locking device is similar to thatabove described. When releasedY the housing provides clearance beneath the side walls 54 Afor actuation of the Jlatchiinger 16. The housling -is automatically locked in its latch .engagtion by thespr-ing A56.
'In the embodiment of Figs. 11 and 12 a pivoted arm 1U `is adapted tocontact and secure the latch when depressed. The arm 'Hl is pivoted at 1I to a housing 'l2 which 'is attached by screws 13 to a base plate Y14 having ears 'I5 -receiving screws or rivets for attachment 'to the vbar l2 Vof the window frame. The arm -is urged yupwardh7 -by la spring l'and carries a shoulder 11 to be engaged by an arm 8l] 'for vlocking the arm "l5 in its lower position.
The arm l8i! is attached tothe end of va keyactuated cylinder 8| of a lock barrel 82 fixed -in the housing A12. The arm 80 is biased inlocking position by-a spring 83.
