S. FROST.
SHUTTER BOWER,
lvm-264,873. 7 Patented Sept. 26, 1882.
n Maa@ Y i UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE,
STILES FROST, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES A. BURDITT AND FREDERICK O. NORTH, BOTH4 OF SAME PLACE.
sHUTTER-BOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 264,873, dated September" 26, 1882,
Application filed May 16,1882. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STILEs Feos'r, of Boston, in thecounty of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Blind-Fastenings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in which. are represented two open blinds having my improved fastening applied thereto.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple and reliable means of connecting and fastening blinds or shutters together when in an ope-n position; and my invention consists in a flat latch-plate provided with one or more recesses or notches in its under side, said latchplate being pivoted to the inside of one ofthe blinds and adapted to move in a straight vertical plane, in combination with a plate provided with one or more hooks, located in the same plane, for the notched plate to engage therewith, the hooked plate being secured to the other blind, by which means the two blinds may be securely held in any desired open position.
To enable others skilled in the art to understandand use my invention, I will proceed to -describe the manner in which I have carried it ont.
In the said drawing, A B represent two open blinds, to one, A, of which, by means of two screws, a b, is secured a metal plate, C, of the form shown, the head and the contiguous portion of the shank ofthe screw a projecting out from the surface of said plate, for a purpose hereinafter mentioned. The outer end of this plate C is bifurcated, the lower bifurcation being turned up to form a projection which serves as a hook, c. To the other blind, B, is screwed a flat metal plate,D, to whichis pivoted, at d, one endV of a long -at arm, E, having two notches, e f, in its under side, near its outer end, the said arm serving as a latch-plate, the outer notched portion, c, engaging with the hook c of the plate C and ipimovably holding the blinds apart when swung open. The notched portion f of the latch-plate is intended to catch over the shank of the projecting screw a of the plateA to fasten the blinds A when closed. y
11. is a stop projecting from the surface of the plate D at a point near the pivot d of the latchplate, to limit the motion of the latter when swung over to the right beyond a vertical plane i passing through said pivot d.
The devices herein described for fastening the blinds when closed, consisting of the projecting screw a. and the notched portion e of the latch-plate E, as also the stop lt for thel latter, form no part of my invention, and I lay no claim thereto.
I hereby acknowledge Patents Nos. 66,710, 137,031, and 162,011.
By increasing thc length of the plate C it may be provided with more than one hook c, and the latch-plate E may also be of a length suiicent to form more than one notch c, to engage therewith, whereby the blinds may be opened and held farther apart.
The latch-plate E may be pivoted directly tothe inner face ofthe blind, instead of to an interposed plate, D, the latter being dispensed with.
I claim- The tlat plate C, provided with one or more hooks, c, located in the same plane therewith and secured to one blind, inicombination with the flat latch-plate E, provided'with one or more notches, e, in its under side, and pivoted to the other blind, said plate E being adapted to swing in a vertical plane, as and'for the purpose set forth.
fitness my hand this 28th day of March, 1882.
STILES FROST. In presencel of- N. W. STEAaNs, H. M. Davis.
