1 Claim.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a foldable fiber container which is especially adapted for crating eggs, fruit and the like for commercial handling.
An object of the invention is to provide a fiber container which may be made from a single rectangular blank by slitting and scoring wherein the container when assembled includes two substantially identical cells, the rear walls of which when the blank is assembled are interlocked with the rear wall of the container so that the rear wall of the container in effect becomes the rear walls of the cells.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type where the interlocking of the walls are obtained by positioning the rear Walls of the cells outside the rear wall of the container and passing the inner end walls of the cells through a slot in the rear wall.

The invention has to do with a fiber container which is made from a single blank preferably of corrugated board. The blank is substantially rectangular in outline and is slit along parallel lines so as to provide side walls which are integral with the bottom wall of the container and a cover which is integral with the rear side wall. These slits also provide end walls which are integral with the bottom, side sections projecting laterally from the end sections and forming the side walls of cells and an inner section or end wall of the cells. These inner end walls of the cells are preferably provided with flaps which are adapted to rigidly connect the walls of the cells.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the blank from which the container is formed is shown in Figure 1. It is substantially rectangular in shape. The blank is slit along the lines l--I so as to provide a bottom 2, a rear side wall 3 and a cover 4. The rear side wall is separated from the bottom by a score line 5 and the cover is separated from the rear side wall by a score line 6. The cover 4 is provided with a flap 1 which is separated from the cover by a score line 8. The blank is also slit along the lines 9-9 to provide a front Wall 10 which is separated from the bottom by some lines ll. These score lines, of course, are not cut through the blank but are of sufficient depth to aid in folding a fold line.
The blank is of sufficient width so as to provide cell walls. The outer end wall of one of the cells is indicated at l2. This end wall is separated from the bottom by a score line I 3. The end wall l2 of the cell carries a side wall extension M which is' separated from the rear wall by the slit I and from the end wall of the cell by a score line l5. This side wall 14 of the cell carries an inner end wall [6 which is provided with flaps H. The blank is scored at l8 and I9 so as to provide fold lines for the end wall and the flap. At the other side of the end wall of the cell is a front side wall 20, which is separated from the end wall I 2 of the cell by a score line 2|. At the opposite side of the blank there are similar end and side walls. The end wall of the cell is indicated at l2, the rear side wall at I4, the inner end wall of the cell at I 6', and the front side wall of the cell at 20'.
The rear wall 3 of the container is provided with a slot 22 which extends from the bottom to the top of the wall when the parts are assembled.
The blank when slit and scored in the manner described above is assembled in the following manner. The rear wall is folded to a vertical position as shown in Figures 2 to 4 inclusive, the end walls l2 and I2 likewise folded to an upright position perpendicular to the bottom wall. The rear sides of the cells are folded so that they are disposed along the outer face of the rear wall 3. The inner end walls of the cells It and I6 are passed through the slot 2!. The side walls 20 and 2| of the cells are then folded as shown in Figure 2 and the flaps l1 and l! are folded back against the outside of the front side walls of the cells as shown in Figure 3. The front wall 10 is then folded to a vertical position relative to the bottom and staples 22, 22 are passed through the front wall, the flaps I1 and I I and the front side Walls 20 and 20. This firmly locks the cells to the front and rear walls of the container. The rear side walls of the cells being disposed on the outer face of the rear wall of the container are held in firm contact with the rear wall by the inner side walls [6 and I6 of the cells which pass through the slot 2|. This makes a very rigid container having cells of substantially equal capacity which container can be shaped as a fiat blank and afterward folded along the score lines and assembled for use in the manner described above. It will be noted that the flaps I! and I1 do not extend to the full height of the front side walls of the cells 20 and 20'. This leaves a pocket at the upper end of these flaps for the flap 1 on the cover to pass into when the cover is closed. This flap 1 will lie between the front wall of the container and the front side walls of the cells as shown in Figure 4. The tape can be attached to the front wall and cover for sealing the container.
In my copending application, Serial No. 147,009 filed of even date herewith, there is shown a liner for a container of the general type described, which liner when used will provide a double bottom wall and double end walls, This liner may also have an extension or extensions which form the cover section so that the container will be provided. with double walls throughout.
It is further understood that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the attached claim.
I claim:
A foldable fiber container formed from a substantially rectangular blank, said blank being scored and slit so as to provide when assembled for use a bottom wall, side and rear walls integral therewith, a cover member integral with said rear wall, end walls integral with said bottom wall, front and rear cell walls formed integral with each end wall, and an inner end cell wall formed integral with each cell rear wall, said rear wall having a slot midway the ends thereof extending from the bottom to the top of the rear wall, said rear walls of the cells when assembled being disposed on the outer face of the rear wall of the container with the inner end walls of the cells extending through the slot in the rear wall, said inner cell walls being dimensioned so as to extend from the bottom of the container to the cover when the container is closed for supporting the cover and also dimensioned so as to extend transversely of the container and between the inner ends of the front side cell walls, said inner cell walls having flaps folded fiat against the outer face of the outer side walls of the cells, the front wall of the container being adapted to be folded against the flaps of the cell walls, and means for joining the front walls, the flaps and the front cell walls, said flaps spacing said front wall of the container from the front side walls of the cells to form a pocket and said cover having a flap adapted to extend downwardly into said pocket when the container is closed.
