1 Claim.
This invention relates to a battery terminal and a method of making the same and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind whereby the connection between an insulated cable and the terminal may be effected in a way to eliminate oil or grease saturation or kindred objections prevailing when a bare cable is used. It is a division of my application 769,505 filed August 19, 1947, which issued November 21, 1950 as Patent No. 2,531,162.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination of the several parts of my improved battery terminal whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of a battery terminal embodying the invention; and
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1.
In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, A denotes a thimble or shell of suitable material nonconductive of electricity and preferably of plastic. This thimble or shell A has its open end continued by a skirt a disposed normally on an outward flare of desired angle and which at points spaced circumferentially therearound is split as at I so that said skirt a may be readily contracted for effective clamping action upon a battery post or the like upon proper turning movement of the nut N, which threads upon the skirt a, as clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings.
These slits l are shown in Figure 2 as four in number although it is to be understood that they may be varied in accordance with the preferments of practice.
The side wall 2 of the thimble A has therethrough a single opening 3, and through which is freely inserted the bared portion 4 of the cable C. The insulated portion 5 of the cable immediately adjacent to the inner end of the bared portion 4 tightly fits within the opening 3 and, as is shown in Figure 1, the bared portion 4 is of a length to extend a major distance across the chamber 6 of the thimble A but not entirely thereacross.
After the bared portion 4 has been inserted into the chamber of the thimble A and the insulated portion 5 tightly fitted within the opening 3, a molten alloy is poured within the chamber 6 of the thimble or shell A to provide a head or filler l and the linings 8 for the skirt a.
The head 1 and the linings 8 are conductive of electricity and the cable and connector will be commercially exploited as a unit.
In practice, after the apron a has been disposed over the usual battery post, the nut N is rotated in a direction to effect a restriction of the apron a in a manner to effectively clamp the battery terminal as a unit to such post.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a battery terminal constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim:
A battery terminal connector for an insulated cable having an end portion of its conductor bared, comprising a hollow body of an insulation material open at its lower end and molded to provide a cylindrical top part and a flared annular lower part, a metal body formed to provide an upper solid cylindrical portion embedded within said cylindrical part and a flared annular lower portion disposed in contact with the inner side of said flared part, said flared part and said flared portion being split longitudinally at identically spaced points about the same, said upper portion having a bore opening through its side and in line with an opening formed in the side of said top part, the bared end of said cable being tight fitted in said bore and the adjacent end of the insulation thereof being fitted in said opening, the inner faces of the split portions of said flared portion being serrated for the effective gripping engagement with the terminal of a battery, said flared part being exteriorly screw threaded, a T-shaped lug formed on the outer side of each of the split portions of said flared portion embedded in the complemental of the split portions of said flared part, and a nut screwthreaded on said flared part to compress the split portions of the same and the like portions of said flared portion into tight engagement with the battery terminal, upper solid portion being entirely surrounded and covered by said hollow body of insulation material.
