ATTORWEV Patented Aug. 4, 1953 BOX WITH PIVOTING ARTICL DISPLAY Joseph E. Coletta, Hyde Park; Mass. assignor to" Farrington Manufacturing Company, a corporation of Massachusetts i Application June 12, 1952, Serial No. 293,161
3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to packaging and, more particularly, to packaging of jewelry such as watches, bracelets and other articles of personal adornment in such manner that they will automatically move into a display position when the box is opened.
The invention has as a primary object the provision of an article mounting assembly in a conventional jewelry type hinged cover case which will cause an article to be displayed which is mounted on the assembly to be pivoted about a fixed axis as the cover is opened to raise the article support from a generally horizontal position into an open box display position extending substantially vertically at right angles to the base of the box and to be returned to horizontal position as the box is closed. This permits display of the article to be displayed in a ver tically extending position even though its height in this position is greater than the closed inside height of the box.
It is a particular object of the invention to mount the article support for simple operation involving simple motion about a fixed axis.
A typical device of the invention is shown in the drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a display box with the cover in open position;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view transversely of 'the box in closed position;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view transversely of the box in open position, being taken along the broken line 33 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional longitudinal view of the box in open position, being taken along the line 4-4 of Fi 3.
The drawings illustrate a conventional box having a base member I I] and a cover member [2 hinged along a hinge line it. Inserted into the base is a liner I8 to which is fixedly attached an upright member 20 which is inclined rearwardly somewhat. Pivotally attached to the upright 20 is an arm 22 which has on the left-hand side thereof, as best shown in Fig. l, a forwardly extending rib member 24, to the front end of which is attached an oval-shaped article support 26. Fixed to and extending rearwardly from rib 24 is an elongated prong-like element 28. The parts 22, 24, 26 and 28 are thus mounted in the pivot 30 for movement about the axis 3! in a plane substantially parallel to the hinge line 14.
Fixedly mounted in the cover is a lifting ele-- ment 32 which extends downwardly from the cover, as shown in Fig. 2, and terminates in a U-shaped portion 34. The U-shaped portion is diagonally slotted as shown at 36 from left to right as shown in Fig. 4, and is of such width as to receive the prong-like element 28.
The slot 36 and element 28 have a camming action such that, as the cover is lowered from its position as shown in Fig. 1, the article support 2t is pivoted counterclockwise, as shown in Fig. 4, about pivot 38 until it lies in horizontal position in the left-hand side of the box, and will be lifted by the action of the prong-like element 28 and slot 36 to its vertically extending position upon opening the hinge cover member l2.
In order to keep the operating parts from separation, it is desirable that the motion of the cover 12 relative to the base ll] be limited to an arc of approximately This may be done in any conventional manner as by the use of a limiting bracket member across the hinge I4. Such a limiting device forms no part of this invention and is conventional.
The invention is related in its broad objectives to the type of display box shown in patent application of David Ortendahl Serial No. 213,753 filed March 3, 1951 and allowed December 13, 1951 and to an application of Wendell W. Sedgwick filed simultaneously herewith.
I claim:
1. In a display box having base and cover members connected at a hinge line along one side of said box, an article support pivotally mounted inside said box for tilting movement in a plane substantially parallel to said hinge line about a fixed axis and cooperating elements on said article support and at least one of said members for tilting said article support in said plane as said box is opened by movement of said members about said hinge line.
2. In a display box having hollow base and cover members connected at a hinge line along one side of said box, an article support pivotally mounted inside said box for tilting movement in a plane substantially parallel to said hinge line about a fixed axis from a horizontally extending position lying in said base member to a vertically extending position, a lifting element mounted on said cover member and movable therewith, and cooperating means on said lifting element and said article support for tilting said article support in said plane from said horizontally extending position to said vertically extending position as said box is opened by movement of said members about said hinge line, and for returning said article support to its horizontally extending position as said box is closed by return movement of said members.
3. In a display box having base and cover members connected together for movement from a closed position with said members disposed in substantially parallel relation to an open position with said members disposed in. angularly related planes, an article support mounted inside said box for pivotal movement about a fixed axis extending in a direction normal to the direction of the intersecting line of said angularly related planes, and cooperating means on said article support and at least one of said members for pivoting said article support about said axis as said box is opened by movement of said members from said closed position to said open position.
