1 claim. (c1. 33-174) v This invention relates to carpenters implements, and more particularly to a gauging and marking instrument for setting drawer pulls and door handles.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved carpenters template specifically adapted for setting drawer pulls and door handles, said template being simple in construction, being easy to manipulate, and providing a substantial saving in time and work in the process of establishing the locations of drawer pulls, door handles, and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved gauging and marking instrument particularly useful in setting drawer pulls and door handles, the instrument being inexpensive to construct, involving relatively few parts, and being easy to use.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view showing an improved gauging and marking instrument employed in setting the location of a door handle on a closet;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the improved template device of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional View taken on the line Il-,-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the improved gauging and marking instrument is designated generally at II. The instrument comprises a rectangular plate member I2 of any suitable material, for example, of sheet metal, formed with the integral stop ange I 3 on the rear side of the plate member I2, said flange extending parallel to the side edges of the plate member. Secured to the plate member on the side opposite the stop flange I3 are the respectively outwardly bowed straps I4, I4, in which is slidably engaged the flexible scale I5, said scale being, for example, of the type including a housing I6 in which the scale is wound up, and further including the right-angled stop I1 at its zero end adapted to be engaged against the edge of a body being measured by the scale. As shown in Figure 2, the straps I 4, I4 are arranged so that the scale I5 is parallel to th-e stop flange I3 and is spaced a short distance from the plane of said flange. Designated at I8 is a handle stud secured to the plate member I2 between the scale I5 and the plane of the ange I3, as shown in Figure 2, the han- 2 dle stud I8 being located substantially on the longitudinal center line of the plate I2.
The plate member I2 is formed along its center line with a row of spaced apertures I9 which may be employed to locate the points at which holes may be drilled for the reception of screws for knobs to be fastened to drawers, said knobs being employed as drawer pulls, and the plate member I2 is further formed with a row of additional openings 20 spaced symmetrically on opposite sides of the longitudinal center line of the plate member to be employed for the purpose of locating the holes to be used to receive the securing screws or fasteners for door handles or the like.
In using the device, the stop fiange I3 is placed against the edge of the door or other object on which the operation is to be performed, as for example, against the side edge 2I of a door 22 in Figure l, and the stop I'l at the zero end of scale I5 is engaged with another edge of the body or with an associated member, such as the second closet door 23 in Figure 1, whereby the plate member I2 may be moved until its longitudinal center line is at a predetermined desired distance from the edge engaged by stop I'I, as determined by observing the index on scale I5 which is in alignment with the holes I 9. If handles are to be located, the locations of the openings to receive the fasteners for the' handles may be determined by inserting a sharp pointed tool through the openings 20, 20 on opposite sides of the longitudinal center line of the plate member I2 in the manner illustrated in Figure 1. Similarly, if it is desired to locate the openings for the bolts or fasteners for knobs or drawer pulls, the openings I9 in the plate member I2 are employed, the projection I'I being engaged on the side edge of the drawer and the ange I3 being engaged on the top edge of the drawer, the plate member I2 being moved until the desired lateral spacing of the drawer pull from the side of the drawer is read on the scale I5. The plate member I2 is held in a stationary position during the marking of the locations of the fasteners through the openings I9 and 2n by exerting inward pressure on the handle stud I8, as illustrated in Figure 1.
While a specic embodiment of an improved gauging and marking instrument for setting door pulls and door handles has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
An instrument for spotting holes to be made in a panel, said instrument comprising a rectangular plate having spaced rows of spaced openings extending therethrough, a stop flange carried by and extending outwardly from one face of said plate intermediate the ends thereof. said stop flange lying perpendicular to the rows of openings and extending for the full width of said plate, outwardly bowed straps carried by the face of the plate remote from the flange, said straps lying across a rectilinear path which extends transversely of the plate intermediate the ends thereof, a substantially rigid measuring tape extending in the rectilinear path across the plate beneath and in frictional contact with said straps, and a stop carried by the tape and pro jecting outwardly therefrom across one side edge thereof for cooperating with the stop ange in holding the plate in a selected position on a panel.
