Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
JOHN J. MITCHELL, OF HOPKINSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
GRATE ATTACH M ENl'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 264,553, dated September 19, 1882.
Application filed April 22, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that'I, JOHN J. MITCHELL, of Hopkinsville, in the county of Christian and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement-in Grate Attachments, which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a device for attachment to one of the bars of a grate in an open tire-place for the purpose of facilitating the heating of a vessel of water, and for other purposes.
The invention consists. in a forked bar, for
engagement with the upper bar of a grate, I5 provided with a pivoted latch for holdingitin position on said bar, and having a pivot for engagement with a socket on a swinging skeleton plate for holding a vessel to be heated,- so that said plate may be readily adjusted and removed, as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of lnyinvention, with a grate-bar in transverse section. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a view at right angles to Fig. 1.
A represents the top bar of a grate, such asv 0 are used in open tire-places.
B is a forked bar, dividedinto two branches, 1) b thespace between which is equal to the thickness of the grate-bar A. At the upper end of the forked bar B is'a vertical pivot,c. The
(No model.)
branch 0 is again divided at right angles to 5 the'plane of the first division, so as to form two branches, between which is pivoted a latch, consisting of an elbow-lever, 1), one end-of which has apivot, e, passed through it and forming itsfulcrun1,and'itsotlierendisforlned 4.0 into a thumb-piece, f. The forked barB is placed so as to straddle the grate-bar A, and
is held in position by pushing the latch D under the grate-bar, as shown in Fig.1, inwhich position it is adapted to receive and hold a 5 swinging skeleton plate, H, provided with a socket, t, for engagement with the pivot c.
The advantages of my invention are: It is cheap and simple in construction, easily attached and removed, strong and durable, and not liable to get out of order, and it provides a readily-accessible means for heating a vessel in cases where a stove is not in use.
I am aware thata skeleton plate provided with a vertical axis consisting of a long rod secured to ithas before been used for a similar purpose. I therefore do not claim such a plate and rod but What I wish to secure by Letters Patent is the following: 7
A grate attachment consisting of a forked bar,B, divided into two branches,b b and provided with a pivoted latch, D, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
. JOHN J. MITCHELL.
