5157/10/11 concern: i hat IQS'JIEPHEN STAFFORD, 0 lie county of Carroll and State ave made certain new and use i'ul Impro ents in Machines for Cleaning and Hackling} Hemp; and I do hereby declare ing is'a fullfclear, and exact e same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of my inachine,and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the brake with two disks or heads j and uniting said disks by means of longitudinal rounds or slats armed with obliquely-set teeth, and arranged so that spaces shall exist between them, and they can be adjusted to give the teeth any desired obliquity, in themanner and for the purpose hereinafter set forth To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to dew scribe its construction and operation;
A A is the frame of the machine.
0 is the cylinder, which has its bearings at E Ein the frameA. A. i a
H H are bars connecting the cylinder-heads, in which the oblique pins '1? P are inserted. The teeth or pins P P are situated obliquely to the axis or elements of the cylinder, as clear- 1y shown in the drawings. The bars H H, in which the oblique teeth P P are permanently fixed, can be so arranged and fastened in the circular drum or cylinder that any desirable inclination may be given the teeth. One means of attaining this end is by the employment of set-screws S S, (see Figs. land 2,) ,whichare made to pass through the peripheries of the circular heads, and, being screwed against the bars H H, any desirable obliquity may be given the bars, and consequentlyto the teeth I I. If the harl be too much watered, the teeth can be thus lowered, so as to prevent loss, and if the harl benot sufiiciently watered,

' and arranged so that spaces shall exist between the teeth can be raised jto expedite the clean ing and hackling. 1
It is obvious that any; similar device for rais; p i p as circumstances may,
ing or loweringthe teeth require may be employed, p y l i p p p i D is a wheel situated on the axisof the re:
voiving cylinder, to which ,the power is applied. The revolving cylinder moveslin the direction indicated by} the arrow in Fig. 1
The operator stands near the part A'of, e frame, and places the hemp upon'the revolving cylinder, the teeth l havingibeen adjusted p M as described, to snit the condition of the hemp which it is desired to cleanuand hackle, The inclination of the cleaningandhacklingteeth; as shown, enables the jop erator to clean and hackle the harl without the labor nejcessar'il expended in cleaning and hackling upouth machines ordinarily employed for, thatp u pose. It is obvious that the same end mayb pp obtained as in myyinvention by lthe insertion of teeth situated obliquely in asolid drum, in lieu of the bars, whichI prefer to employ, and
employment of fiat pieces situated on a revolv perform the same functions as the oblique teeth in my invention, and Ido not therefore wish to be restricted to the use of teeth or pin as shown in my invention, as I de emthe modifications I have described as mere equivalents \Vhat I claim as my invention, anddesi re to secure by Letters Patent, is-- j a i Constructing thebrake with two disks or headsand uniting said disks by means of rounds or slats armed w ith obliquely set teeth,
