Description

'(ModeL) T. '15. McNAIR.
' BALE TIE.
No. 253,741. Patented Feb. 14,1882.
il nesses I Wz Mama CNNLRWM/ UNITED STATES THOMAS F. .MCNAIR, OF DAWSON, GEORGIA.
BALE-Tl E SPEOIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,741, dated February 14, 1882. 7
Application filed November 8, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F.MoNA1R-,of Dawson, in the county of Terrell, and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Band Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in bale-ties; and it has for its objects to provide a device whereby the ends, of the tie may be readily connected together, and the parts of which may be securely locked by the strain upon the tie, as. more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of the said device, showing the parts connected and locked. Fig. 2 represents a similar View of the device, showing the parts connected but unlocked; and Fig. 3 represents a side view of the device, showing the parts connected and locked.
The device is preferably constructed of sheet metal; and it consists of a flat strip, A, bent at one end, as shown, and at the other provided with an aperture, or other means whereby it can be secured to the end of the binding-chain B, or a bale-band.
The letter 0 indicates a flat strip, having an aperture or other means at one end whereby it may be secured to the opposite end of the PATENT OFFIcE.
chain or band. The free end of the strip 0 is beveled, as indicated at O, for the purpose more fully hereinafter specified.
The letter D indicates a flat book, which is swiveled to the strip 0 at E in such manner that when the parts are secured together and a longitudinal strain is brought upon the device the said parts will assume the position shown in Fig. 1, with the free end of the strip 0 in contact with the end of the hook D.
In securing the parts of the device together 5 the bent portion of the strip A is passed over the hook and is held thereby, asshowp in Fig. I 2, the parts being open, as indicated. the strain of the expanding cotton tightens the band the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 1, securely locking the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bale-tie fastening consisting of a bent mctallic strip, A, a straight strip, 0, having a beveled end, 0, a pivoted hook, D, adapted to hold the strip A and, in connection with the beveled end 0 of the strip 0, lock the parts, and the straps B, all arranged substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereofI affiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 14th day of October, 1881.
T. F; MoNAIR. Witnesses:
J As. G. PARKS, M. L. WESTON.
