PERMANENT UNDERGROUND INSTALLATION LAWN SPRINKLER Dec. 12, 1950 Filed March 12, 1947 3/ as a? 2, 4/ 27 INVENTOR. HoeE/vrE. SOC/ILL a1 WWII? ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 12, 1950 OFFICE PERMANENT UNDERGROUND INSTALLA- TION LAWN SPRINKLER Florent E. Socall, Detroit, Mich.
Application March 12, 1947, Serial No. 734,074
1 Claim.
This invention relates to underground lawn sprinkler installations.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a lawn sprinkler head which is of simple construction, easy to install and which has a minimum number of parts to maintain.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a sprinkler head which can be adjusted to govern the flow of water leaving the same and the area to be covered by the water.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the sprinkler head 7 of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view, of the sprinkler head of the invention and taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows thereof.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the dispersing disk positioned on the upper end of the sprinkler head.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding arts the improved lawn sprinkler of this invention includes a sprinkler head l adapted by means of a threaded socket to be connected to the upper end of a water supply riser. The top end of this sprinkler head has an enlarged flange 29 on the upper end with a depression or recess 2'! in its top face. Extending upwardly from the socket 25 is a threaded central bore 28. Also below the recess 21 is a recess 29 of less diameter and countersunk to receive a dispersing plate or disk 3| having a plurality of serrations in a beveled under surface thereof engaging with the countersunk face of the recess 29. An attaching screw 32 extends downwardly through the disk 3| and into the threaded central bore 28 to secure the disk in tight engagement with the counter-sunk surface of the recess 29. A gasket 33 is positioned under the head of the screw 32 to prevent leakage through the disk 3!. The fastening screw 32 extends only part way down through the opening 28. Below the lower end of the screw 32 there is extended a hole 94 which enters a vertically extending opening or passage 35 for delivering water to the countersunk recess 29. This hole 34 is adapted to receive a valve extension 22 on an adjusting screw 36. The adjusting screw 36 can be adjusted through a laterally extended threaded opening 37 within a laterally extending projection 38 of the head. By this adjusting screw 36 the flow of water through the head can be governed whereby to vary the area of ground to be sprinkled. A cap screw 39 is threaded into the end of the opening 31 to seal the opening against leakage which may pass the adjusting screw 36.
Within the large recess 27 in the top of the flange 26 and surrounding the smaller recess 29 is an annular groove 4| adapted to receive any dirt or foreign matter so as to prevent the same from passing downwardly between the openings within the disk 3! in such a manner as to fill the sprinkler head with dirt. Dirt can be periodically removed from this groove 4| While various changes may be made in the detail construction of these sprinkler heads, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim:
In a sprinkler head, the combination which comprises a main body having a recess with an outwardly inclined peripheral surface in the upper end and having a threaded bore extended downwardly from the recess, said body having a threaded supply pipe receiving socket in the lower end communicating with the threaded bore and aligned therewith, a dispersing disk having a radially slotted conical peripheral surface corresponding with the inclined peripheral surface of the body, positioned in the recess, means removably mounting the disk on the body, said body having a vertically disposed passage parallel to the threaded bore providing communicating means between the supply pipe socket and recess by means of the said threaded bore with which the said passage is connected by a laterally positioned opening, and said body also having a laterally disposed threaded opening extended from the outer surface thereof through the said vertically disposed passage and aligned with the opening connecting the said vertically disposed passage to the threaded bore, an adjusting screw, threaded in the said laterallv disposed opening and having a point positioned to extend into the opening connecting the said vertically disposed passage with the threaded bore for regulating the flow of fluid through the sprinkler head, and a cap screw threaded into the outer end of the said laterally disposed opening providing a closure therefor.
