UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.

This invention relates to ladies bathing suits, dresses, sportswear, beachwear and play clothes.

Broadly, it is an object of the invention to provide a combination garment which comprises a foundation and an outer garment.

More particularly, it is an object of the invention to provide a combination unitary garment which has a foundation comprising a brassire attached to panties at the front portion while the rear portion between the baci: of the brassire and the top of the panties is not attached, thus leaving an opening. The top of the brassire only is attached to the upper front of the outer garment.

Heretofore, garments, especially bathing suits, have been made with linings attached to the outer fabric of the garment, the lining generally being made of a stretchable material, such as jersey, while the outer material was preferably made of a Wool or nylon fabric having rapid drying qualities. In bathing suits, or garments, of this character a separable fastener is generally provided in the vertical center of the rear of the garment. Although plackets are provided behind the zipper elements, in putting the garment on and removing it the slider of the separable fastener generally catches the lining material, causing tears or holes in such lining material. The various sales outlets have returned many such garments since in trying them on, either in the store or at home, the lining would be caught, as above mentioned, and such garments would be returned to the manufacturers as defective, causing a great deal of friction between the manufacturer and the storekeeper. Furthermore, such linings, since they are made of stretchable materials, do not give adequate support to the midriff and the breasts.

I have, therefore, sought to eliminate these disadvantages and have constructed my garment so that the foundation is attached only to the upper line of the front of the garment as the only point of attachment, leaving the back of the outer garment to hang freely without attachment of the back of the foundation at any point to the outer garment. I have also provided in the upper portion of the foundation garment a bias front central construction which will facilitate or aid in the separation of the breasts. I have also provided a double fabric structure directly beneath the breasts to give support to the abdominal region, making the foundation at the midrilf portion hug the body so that once the breasts are placed in the breast pockets, there is no way in which the breasts can become dislodged, thus aiding in providing an uplift for the breasts. r

The brassire is provided with vertical stainless steel spirals so that support is given to both the foundation and the outer garment, thus permitting a strapless bathing suit to be worn without fear of the suit or garment shifting its position.

For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference is had to the following detailed description, together with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings, numeral Il) represents a garment comprising a foundation. garment and an outer garment. The foundation garment is shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 and comprises a strapless brassire portion II and a panty portion I2.

The brassire portion II comprises a pair of opposed vertical front central panels I3 made of fabric set on the bias and attached to each other by stitching along a medial vertical line I4, a pair of panels I5 covering the breasts and the portion between the breasts and the waistline I6, side panels I'I of fabric set on the bias, and a body encircling back strap or band I8 attached to the vertical ends of thel side panels II. Back strap I8 has a series of vertically disposed hooks and eyes, as shown at I9, for adjustably and separably attaching the brassire portion I I upon the wearer, as is well known in the art. Between panels I5 and I5, and panels I5 and Il, are narrow, substantially vertical pockets 2|] for receiving spirals 20', preferably made of stainless ilexible steel, as is also well known in the art. The spiral pockets run the full length of the brassire portion II, that is, between the waistline I6 and the top 2i of the brassire portion Il and curve around the breasts as shown in the drawings so that no undue pressure is applied to the breasts. The spirals are placed within the pockets and run from about one-half inch from the top to about two inches above the waist, allowing the wearer comfort when seated. The spirals maintain the brassire portion I I in upright position upon the wearer without the use of shoulder straps. Shaped darts 22 are placed directly at the nipple of the breast portion and run to the Waistline in panels I5, as shown by line 22, to form the breast pockets 23 and to shape the portion beneath the pockets 23 to the abdominal region and the Waist, the fabric being set on the bias to permit stretchability over the contours of the breasts and abdominal region. Beneath the breast pockets 23 and the waistline I6 and between the spiral pockets 2t on either side of the breasts and on the inside of the brassire portion, a pair of reinforcing panels 2li are attached, as best shown in Fig. 6, the fabric of which is set on the straight 'Ihe upper line 25 of panels 2li are concave and follow the underneath curve of the breast. When the back strap i8 is attached behind the wearer, the brassire portion hugs the body of the wearer, the bias panels i3 causing a separation of the breasts while the straight inner panels 24 limit the horizontal stretchability of the brassire portion beneath the breasts to help support the abdominal region and to prevent the breasts from becoming dislodged from their breast pockets and helping in uplifting the breasts. Suitable tapes are provided at the seams and tops, as is well known in the The panty portion il comprises a pair of panties generally known in the art and having thigh encircling portions and an elastic member at the upper back, as shown at 2i. The top front horizontal portion of the panties is attached to the bottom front of the brassire portion li. The back portion, however, between the elastic 2l and the bottom of the back strap i3 is not attached, providing an opening 28 so that the wearer can bend in any direction Without causing any tension upon the back of the brassire portion l l.

The outer garment, shown in Fig. 1, is pictured as a bathing suit for illustrative purposes only. However, such out-er garment may take the form of a dress, or short sportswear dress used for tennis or golf, different types of beachwear garment or play clothes. Such outer garment comprises an upper portion above the waistline and a skirt portion which may be short or long and styled in any desirable form. However, the neckline 29 should coincide with the top line 2! of the brassire portion l l since neckline 29 and the top 2i of the brassire portion l! are attached by stitching 30 which runs only along the front of the garment. Shoulder straps 3i may be attached to the outer garment, if desired, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. However, since the spirals of the brassire portion ii maintain the brassire portion upon the wearer without the necessity of using shoulder straps, the outer garment can also be supported upon the wearer without the use of the shoulder straps 3i, if desired, because of the stitching 30 which joins the outer garment to the brassire portion ll or foundation.

It will thus be seen that both the outer garment and foundation comprise a simple unitary garment, the outer garment hanging free of the foundation, except at the front neckline.

It is obvious that various changes and modiu cations may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the general spirit of the invention.

I claim:

1. The combination of a foundation garment and an outer garment, said foundation garment comprising a strapless brassire portion and a panty portion, said brassire portion comprising a pair or breast pockets and a front portion between said breast pockets and the waistline, a

body encircling back strap for said brassire portion having means for attaching and detaching said back strap at the rear center thereof, a pair of panties having an elastic at the upper back, said panties attached at its front portion to the bottom front of said brassire portion, an outer garment comprising an `upper portion and a skirt portion, the top edge of the front of said brassire portion conforming to the shape and outline of the top edge portion of the front of the outer garment and attached to the top edge of the front of said upper portion of said outer garment.

2. The garment in accordance with claim 1, wherein substantially vertical narrow pockets are provided in said brassire portion and flexible steel spirals within said pockets for maintaining said garment upon the wearer without shoulder straps for said brassire portion.

3. The combination of a foundation garment and an outer garment, said foundation garment comprising a strapless brassire portion and a panty portion, said brassire portion comprising a pair of breast pockets and a front abdominal portion, said brassire portion having a pair of opposed vertical front central panels, panels covering the breasts and the portion between said breasts and the waistline, and side panels, said front central panels on each side of the central vertical medial line the fabric of which is set on the bias for providing breast separation, inner reinforcing panels the fabric of which is set on the straight beneath said breasts and between said breasts and the waistline for limiting the horizontal stretchability of brassire portion to support the abdominal region and the breasts, substantially vertical spirals on either side of said breast covering panels between said waistline and the top of said brassire portion for maintaining said strapless brassire portion in upright position upon the wearer, a body encircling back strap for said brassire portion having means for attaching and detaching said back strap at the rear center thereof, a pair of panties having a substantially horizontal elastic at the upper back, said panties attached at its front portion to the bottom front of said brassire p0rtion, an outer garment comprising an upper portion and a skirt portion, the top edge of the front of said brassire portion conforming to the shape and outline of the top edge portion of the front of the outer garment and attached to the top edge of the front of said upper portion of said outer garment.

4. lThe garment in accordance with claim 3, wherein substantially vertical narrow pockets are provided in said brassire portion on either side of said breast panels and between said waistline and the top of said brassire portion, Vertical flexible spirals within said pockets for maintaining said strapless brassire portion upon the wearer.
