Description
Nov. 21, 1950 J. M. STACEY TUBE SOCKET WITH TERMINAL BOARD SKIRT Filed May 2, 1947 Patented Nov. 21, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TUBE SOCKET WITH TERMINAL BOARD SKIRT 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an improved octal type tube socket for radio tubes.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved octal type radio tube socket havin a peripherally disposed terminal board skirt formed about said socket.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved octal type radio tube socket with terminal board skirt formed of any desired insulating material being centrally or axially apertured to receive the usual guide prong and key of an octal type radio tube base, and being formed with the usual type prong openings and depending terminals, together with a plurality of radially extending threaded terminal sleeves disposed about the peripheral edge of said skirt and a plurality of threaded terminal post connector supporting sleeves arranged concentrically about said socket in said skirt portion disposed at right angles to said radially extending threaded terminal sleeves.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved octal type radio tube socket with terminal board skirts formed of any desired insulating material having a plurality of radially extending threaded terminal sleeves electrically connected with the desired customary depending socket terminals, and a plurality of threaded post connector supporting sleeves arranged concentrically about said socket for supporting depending posts of various desired lengths, whereby the components such as resistors and condensors which are connected in the various circuits with the radiotube socket may be soldered in place and the completely pre-wired socket assembly or unit secured in place upon a chassis.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of integrally formed octal type radio tube sockets with a plurality of extra radially and axially extending connecting posts or sleeves disposed or built therein, whereby the components such as resistors and condensors used with a particular tube may be soldered directly to the tube posts or to the extra connecting posts or sleeves supported by said socket and skirt for providing minimum length connections and a completely pre-wired socket assembly or unit.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an octal type radio tube and octal type socket with terminal board skirt showing the components such as resistors and condensors soldered in place to provide a completely pre-wired unit or assembly;
Figure 2 is a view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the octal type socket with terminal board skirt, and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken through the octal type socket with terminal board and the chassis to which the same is secured and attached.
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of a, portion of the terminal board skirt.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an octal type socket generally designated by the numeral I having a terminal board skirt 2 formed about its base or lower end. The socket I is centrally apertured at 3 to guide and receive the depending guide prong or stem 4 and key 5 on the lower end of an octal base radio tube 6.
' A plurality of circumferentially arranged tube prong receiving bores or openings 1 are formed vertically through the socket l, and have the usual depending terminals 8 connected therewith extending below said socket.
The terminal board skirt 2 is formed with a plurality of vertical circumferentially arranged bores II] in which the headed metal sleeves l l are adapted to be positioned. The sleeves H are externally threaded at l2 on their lower ends for receiving the nuts it for locking and securing the same in said skirt 2.
The sleeves H are also formed with. the internally threaded bores 14 in their upper ends in which the screw bolts l5 are adapted to be received, said bolts l5 extending through apertures IS in the chassis M! for securing the sockets thereto.
A plurality of conductor posts I! are secured in bores in the lower ends of the sleeves II and are of various desired lengths, whereby resistors I8 and condensors l9 may be soldered together and to the necessary terminals on the socket l for wiring the components in place which are required in the several circuits for the particular octal tube being used in the socket I, whereby the completely pre-Wired assembly or unit may be installed in the chassis 4!! after all wiring has been completed.
A plurality of radially extending spacers 2| extend from the socket I to space the chassis 40 above the socket base. A plurality of radially extending internally threaded sleeves 20 are disposed in the terminal board skirt and support the flanged contact posts 22 in their outer ends, the posts supporting dependin terminal strips 23, which will have the necessary circuit component such as the resistors l8 and the condensors l9 soldered thereto, as clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. Similar terminals 23 may be used in any place where found necessary or desirable.
If desired, one or more of the vertical conductor posts I! may be wired and grounded to the chassis 40, and all of the wiring may be done before the socket I is secured in position upon the chassis 40, providing for a completely prewired assembly or unit which may be removed from the chassis if necessary while makin repairs. Of course, any desired shielding (not shown) may be employed.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that a highly efiicient form of pre-wired octal type socket with terminal board has been devised and provided, which will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in details of construction. may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
In combination, a tube socket formed with a peripherally disposed terminal board skirt having depending contact terminals, a plurality of internally threaded contact sleeves vertically disposed through said skirt, variable length conductors inserted in the lower ends of said sleeves, means for locking said conductors in the sleeves, a plurality of radially extending threaded sleeves disposed in the terminal board skirt, contact posts in said sleeves for supporting circuit makin components associated with the variable length conductors, a support and means extending through said support and into said vertical sleeves whereby said sleeves serve as support for the conductors and the terminal board skirt.
