' OAR COUPLING.
No. 252,965. Patented Jan. 31,1882.
L- ATTORNEYS UNrTsn STATES PATENT Orrrcs.
SOLON A. PERRY, OF BELOIT, KANSAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 252,965, dated January 31, 1882.
Application filed June 10,1881.
To all whom it may concern Be' it known that I, SOLON A. PERRY, of Beloit, in the county of Mitchell and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this application, in which-- Figure 1 is arepresentation of aperspective of my car-coupler, showing a link inserted. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectionalview, showing a link inserted and the pin in a position to drop down.
This invention has relation to car-couplings; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed outin the claim.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A represents the draw-head, having above thelinkhole and in front of the coupling-pin a recess, a, which is inclined or concaved, as shown at B, to receive the cam-projection d on the coupling-pin b, which conforms to the shape of the said recess. In the draw-head, in rear of the pin-hole or opening, is a groove, 6, to receive the end of the coupling link when pushed far back in the draw-head. From this groove to the stop D is a concave, g, for the pin at its bevel g to slide upon when in the operation of coupling. Above this groove is a diverging part, It, which extends up to the entering-hole for the coupling-pin. Journaled near the front, upon qhe under side of the draw-head, in box (No model.)
i, is a lever, I, which is weighted at its rear end, m, and has secured to its forward end a guide-plate, 0, having side flanges, 0, for guiding the link to the holein the draw-head when it strikes upon the said plate. The couplingpin is rounded or beveled atits point, as shown at g. This lever I is straight from its pivotal or hearing point to the guide-plate O, and bent downward and backward at its end from said point.
When the link is inserted in the draw-head by a connecting car it will strike the face of the couplingpin, thus moving it up the concave g and raising it partly out of the recess a, which will cause it to pass over the end of said link and drop in its opening and back to its normal position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is
In a car-coupling, the draw-head A, having the upper recess, a, inclined, as shown, the rear groove, 0, and lower concave, g, in combination with the pivoted guide-plate 0, having flanges 0, and weighted lever I m, and the coupling-pin 0, having cam-projection cl and beveled or rounded point g, substantially as specified.
In testimony that. I claim the foregoing as my invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SOLON A. PERRY.
