This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in hangers, more specifically, hangers for towels, coats, dresses, and the like, and the principal object of the invention is to prevent such articles from becoming torn by the hanger while they are being removed therefrom, particularly in darkness when the user cannot properly observe his actions.

This object is achieved by the provision of a hanger wherein an article is held by frictional engagement, rather than by a direct physical support.

An important feature of the invention resides in the provision of a hanger which is simple in construction, pleasing in appearance, and wherein the article may be quickly and easily applied or removed.

With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects in view, and such other objects as maybecome apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in use;

Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of the invention per se;

Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of a gripping arm and resilient clip used in the invention; and

Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of one end portion of the gripping arm.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a hanger designated generally by the reference character ID, the same embodying in its construction a circular base plate l2 provided with a marginal flange I4, the plate l2 also being equipped with a plurality of countersunk apertures to receive suitable bolts or screws [6, whereby the entire hanger may be conveniently secured to suitable supporting structure l8.

By virtue of the flange I 4, the base plate [2 is disposed in spaced relation with respect to the structure I8, the base plate having inner and outer surfaces or sides 20, 22 respectively, as will be clearly apparent. A resilient clip 24 extends through a slot 26 with which the plate 12 is provided, one end portion of this clip, that is, the inner end portion of this clip being undulated as at 28, whereby the inherent resiliency of the clip is substantially enhanced. The extremity of this undulated portion engages a detent 30 formed on the inner surface 20 of the plate l2, which detent, together with the particular configuration of the clip, anchors the clip, so to speak, to the base plate, as will be,

clearly apparent.

An arcuate, substantially semi-circular gripping arm 32 has one end portion thereof secured by means of a screw or rivet 34 to the remaining, that is, the outer end portion 36 of the clip 24, the secured end portion of the arm 32 being sectionally relieved as at 38 and 40 to accommodate the clip, and the relievedportion 40 defining a pair of spaced fulcrum points or prongs 42 which rockably engage the outer surface 22 of the plate 12.

It is to be noted that the clip 24 is intended to urge the remaining end 44 of the arm 32 against the surface 22 of the plate l2, so that when the invention is placed in use, an article, such as for example a towel 46, may be interposed between the end 44 of the arm 32 and the surface 22 of the plate I2 and be held in position therebetween by frictional engagement.

Needless to say, the article 46 may be applied to the hanger by simply lifting the arm 32 in the direction of the arrow 48, but it should be noted that the article may be instantly removed from the hanger by simply being pulled outwardly therefrom. Since only a frictional contact of the arm 32 with the article 46 is involved, it will be found that the article may be removed from the hanger without being torn or otherwise damaged. I

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and, accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

In a hanger, the combination of a base plate formed with a slot and provided with a rearwardly angulated marginal flange, an arcuate gripping arm provided at one end thereof with a notch defining a pair of fulcrum elements at the sides of said notch and engaging said base plate at its opposite end, said fulcrum elements engaging the front surface of said plate at the ends of said slot whereby said arm is movable toward and away from the base plate, a resilient strip extending through said slot and having its outer end portion disposed in said notch and secured to said arm and its inner end portion extending toward the opposite end of the arcuate arm, and a shoulder provided on the rear surface of said plate, the inner end portion of said strip being undulated and the extremity thereof engaging said shoulder, said strip urging said arm toward the outer surface of said plate.
