N. WITTS.
. I SNOW PLOW. No. 252,639. Patented Jan. 2451882.w
WITNESSES 1.1V V'EJV' TOR TINTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON VVITTS, OF ALMA CITY, MINNESOTA;
SNOW-PLOW.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,639, dated January 24, 1882'.
Application tiled December 5, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON WVITTS, of Alma City, in the county of Waseco and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and use ful lm 'irovements in Snow-Flows; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full,clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved snow-plow which will readily cut its way through deep and compact snow-drifts, and which will clear the snow from the rails and throw it to the sides of the track. These objects I attain by means of the devices illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a top or plan view of the principal part of a snow-plow embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a. side elevation, and Fig. 3 represents a modification.
In carrying my invention into effect I employ two large angers, A and B, arranged at the sides of a wedge-shaped projection, O, which is provided with curved edges 0 and boxes (J at its rear ends, the lower edge of which boxes project laterally to form horizontal cutters G the whole constituting the front end of the plow. These angers converge toward their forward ends and have their shafts or axes supported in suitable bearings. The rear ends of the anger shafts will be provided with gears U, whichintermesh with gear-wheels D, that can be driven by a system of gears connected with the engine, or by any suitable arrangement ofpilot-wheels and belts or crank's and connecting-rods. The angers are caused to revolve about their respective axes as the plow advances, and they will cntintothesnow and throw the same from off the rails. In this construction the wedge-shaped part of the plow will prove serviceable in cutting through deep drifts. In the modification shown I dispense with the wedge-shaped front portion of the plow and make the angers very large and with a taper from rear to front, thus forming a wedgeshaped projection in front of the plow composed of two angers. In this case a suitable bar will extend out from the body of the plow and bearings for the shafts of the augersbe secured to the forward endofsnidbar; or,in place ofsaid bar, anysuitable fraineean be employed. The anger shown in said modification consists ot'a metal band wound spirally around a shaft, one ed geofsaid band being turned u p or flanged, as at E, so as to effectively throw ofl'the snow. I am aware of Patent No.' 124,739 to 0. Heggem, which shows a wedge-shaped projection, above which, on each side, are arranged rotary angers supported in a suitable hanging bracket situated above and independen bet the wedge-shaped projection. The construction shown in this patent I do not wish to be under stood as claiming as niy invention, which consists only in the novel construction and arrangement ofparts herein shown and specified. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 7-0 As an improvement in snow-plows, the combination, with the wedge-shaped projection U, having curved edges O,and boxes 0 having horizontal cutters O, of the rotary angers A B, situated in channelstorined by the on rved edges 75 C, all arranged and operating substantially as herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto 'affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NELSON WITTS.
