1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to an adjustable strike plate for looks.
An object of the invention is to provide a clamp that permits the strike plate to be adjusted so that the door can be kept tight against the door strip and thus prevents play in the door with relation to the plate.
At present it is impossible to keep the door tight against the door stop since the stop cannot be moved. However the present invention permits the plate to be moved backward or forward simply and easily.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamp that is easily installed and adjusted, is durable in use and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is an elevational view of the strike plate installed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a view of the clamps with the strike plate removed;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the clamps;
Figure 6 is a modified form of clamp;
Figure 7 is a sectional view of the form shown in Figure 6 in conjunction with the strike plate and the section line of the clamp being approximately on the line 1-1 of Figure 6 Figure 8 is a sectional view similar to Figure 7 with the section line of the clamp being approximately on the line 88 of Figure 6;
Figure 9 is another modified form of the invention shown in section;
Figure 10 is another modified form of the invention shown in section;
Figure 11 shows the clamp of Figure 10 in reversed position;
Figure 12 is another modificationin section;
Figure 13 is another modification in section;
Figure 14 is a perspective view of the clamp shown in Figure 9;
Figure 15 is a perspective view of the clamp shown in Figure 13;
Figure 16 is a perspective view of the used in Figures 10, 11 and Figure 17 is a perspective view of the clamp used in Figure 12.
clamp Referring more in detail to the drawings the reference numeral 20 designates a door jamb and 22 the strike plate secured thereto by machine screws 24 which are receivable in the elongated slots 26 in the clamps 28 and retained therein by the nut 29 thereon.
The clamp 28 comprises parallel portions 30 which are spaced from each other and joined integrally with each other by the portion 32 in which the slots 26 are provided. One of the portions 30 is provided with the outwardly extending tapered portion 34 which is provided with the aperture 36 for reception of a wood screw 38 for retaining the clamp on the jamb 20 and an aperture 40 for receiving a second wood screw 42 therein which will prevent swinging movement of the portion 34 on the screw 38.
It will be understood that the jamb is provided with the cavities 44 and 46 for reception of the latch bolt and lock bolt of the door look not shown and the clamps 28 are positioned therein for the mounting of the striker plate in accordance with the invention. When the clamp 28 is in position in the jamb 20 the portions 3!! lie in spaced horizontal planes with relation to the jamb 20 while the portions 32 and 34 are in vertical planes at right angles to the portions 30.
In Figures 6, 7 and 8 the clamp 48 is provided with the parallel portions 50 having the portions 52 joined thereto at the upper end thereof and the portions 52 are spaced from each other at 54 but joined together by the U-shaped portions 56 which are joined at the marginal side edges of the portions 52. Thus the machine screw 24 will have movement between the portions 52 at their spaced position 54 and will be retained therein by the nut 29, and as previously described, one of the: portions 50 is provided with a tapered portion 58: having apertures 60 and 62 therein for the pur-. poses outlined above. When the clamp 48 is in position in the jamb 20 the portions 50 lie in spaced horizontal planes with relation to the jamb 20 while the portions 52 and 58 are in vertical planes at right angles to the portions 50.
In Figures 9 and 14 the clamp 64 is provided with the portion 66 having the elongated slot 68 for reception of the machine screw 24 and the aperture Ill for the reception of a wood screw for attaching the clamp to the jamb. At the opposite end the portion 66 has the portion 12 joined thereon which has the tapered portion 14 formed thereon having the aperture 16 for the reception of a wood screw for securing the clamp to the jamb. Thus by the use of two wood screws the clamp is immovably retained in the jamb. When the clamp 64 is in position in the jamb the portions 66 and 14 are in vertical planes while the portion 12 is in a horizontal 'plane formed at one end on the lower edge of the portion 66 and at its opposite end to the upper edge of the portion 14. Thus the portion 12 extends at right angles to the portions 66 and 14.
In Figures 10, 11, and lfi'theclamp I8 is provided with the plate portion 88 having the elongated slot 82 therein for the reception of the machine screws 24 and the apertures 84 for reception of wood screws for securing the clamp to to jamb. The portion has formed thereon and extending at right angles therefrom the reduced lip portion 86 which spaces the clamp from the bottom of the cavities 44 and 46.
In Figures 12 and 1'? the clamp is shown having the plate portion 8| provided with theelongated slot 83 adjacent the forward end thereof for the reception of the machine screws 24 and the apertures adjacent the rear end thereof for the reception of wood screws 88 for securing the clamp to the jamb and the plate portion BI is provided at its forward end with the right angularly related portion 81.
In Figures 13 and 15 the clamp 90 comprises a plate 92 having the elongated slot 94 for the reception of the machine screw 24 at one end and apertures 95 at the other end for reception of wood screws 96 for securing the plate to the jamb.
By means of the machine screws 24 and the elongated slots in the clamps the striking plate can be adjusted backward or forward to compensate for the play of the door or sideways to permit alignment of the lock bolt and latch bolt of the door lock and be retained in such position by the nuts 29 on the screws 24.. The clamps permit adjustability of the striking plates to eliminate all play between the door and plate and the plate is easily installed and adjusted and retained in such adjusted position to obtain the objects of the invention.
It is believed that the construction and operation of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is tobe understood that 4 changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
Means for securing a strike plate to a door jamb for lateral adjustment with relation to the jamb, said means comprising clamps adapted to be secured to the door jamb inwardly of the end portions of said strike plate, each clamp comprising right angularly related members with certain of said members having the ends of the strike plate arranged in contact therewith and provided with slots extending in a direction transversely of the strike plate, said members comprising two parallel portions and two aligned portions fixed alon the edge of each parallel portion at right angles thereto, and said slots are formed by U-shaped upstanding portions fixed to the opposite edge of each aligned portion, nuts within the clamps in contact with the under sides of said members of the clamps and bolts passing through the strike plate and the slots of said members of the clamps and engaging the nuts and the other members of the clamps contacting with certain sides of the nuts to hold them against rotation.
