NILS NILSON, F MAPLE PLAIN, MINNESOTA.
VEHICLE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,246, dated. January 10, 1882.
Application filed September 12, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom ittmcy concern:
Be it known that I, NILs NILsoN, of Maple Plain, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have in vented certain new and useful Improvementsin Vehicle-Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to theaccompanyingdrawings, which form apart of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a wagon-box pro vided with my improved springs. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view, on an"enlarged scale, of one of the springs, with its auxiliary coiled spring and tubular elastic cushion or sleeve; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the spring-bar, sleeve, and spring shown in Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to springs for vehicles, and contemplates certain improvements in the construction of the same, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed sheet of drawings, the letter B represents the front spring-bar, the ends bearings G G, which are affixcd to the under side of and project out laterally from the wagonbox A. Around the outer end of this bar, just inside of its bearings, are doubled the springs, each of which consists of a lower leaf, D, and an upper leaf, D, doubled upon the former so as to form an eye, d, clamping the end of bar B. Lateral motion of the spring is prevented by the bearings U and washers a, secured upon the bar, one ateach end, and the springs D D are rigidly affixed upon their respective ends of the bar, so that the latter will move or give with them. To control this yielding motion of the spring-bar B, I employ two coiled springs,
E E, one at each side, and one end of each of which is secured in the bottom of the wagonbox, as shown at 0, while the other or outer end is secured in the washer c, which is fastened rigidly upon the bar, so as to move withit.
By reference to Fig. f the drawings it will be seen that I provide each end of the bar, around which spring E is coiled, first with a metallic tube or bushing, (shown at 01,) which is in turn inserted through a tube or sleeve, f, of india-rubber or other elastic material, and which forms an elastic cushion or packing for the spring E wound around it.
By this construction and combination of the spring-bar B, elastic packing j, coiled springs E, and leaf-spring D D it will be seen that I form a compound spring composed of the elements D D, E, and f, because the tubular packingf will also act in the nature of a spring in respect of the coiled spring E, the contraction of which it does, of course, resist; and this compound spring, while very strong and durable, will be found very easy and sensitive and greatly conducive to the comfort of the occupants of the vehicle in riding over rough roads. Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesv The compound vehicle-spring composed of the curved leafspring D D and coiled spring E, in combination with the spring-bearings O and bar B, provided with the washer 0, bushing (7, and tubular elastic packing f, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NILS NILSON. Witnesses:
A. Y. EATON, G. W. SMITH.
