MARTIN BOURKE, or YoUNesrowN, omo.
BOAT- D ETACHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,690, dated January 3, 1882.
Application filed July 15, 1881. (No model.)
` To all whom 'itmay concern:
t view of one end of a boat, showing the application ot'my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view, in perspective, of my invention Vdisconnected from the boat; and Fig. 3 is a moditication` thereof'.
The present invention has relation to that class of devices for detachin g or releasing life or other boats from their connections after being launched from off the ship, which is fully set forth in my patent of December 17, 1878, No. 210,908; and the invention is designed as an improvement thereon, the object being to provide a device that can be attached to the inside of the boat as well as the outside and readily and eftectuaily operated in freeing the boat from its connections, immediately upon coming in contact with the surface ot' the water. These objects I attain by the construe tion substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a sectional view of one end ot a boat of the usual construction.
Within the boat A, at each end thereof, is
suitably connected, by bolts or other means, a
devices being in the form of arms projecting from each side of the standard they are in the form oi' an inclined notch, and the clutch having an inclined shoulder to correspond, so that it will seat itself in the notch and hold itself in connection with the standard until the boat is sufficiently lowered to be brought in contact with the water, when it will release itself automatically. It will be understood that the same result is obtained by the construction as shown in'Fig. 3, but by a slight modification, such change, as coming within the spirit otmy invention, I reserve the right to maire.
The clutches at each end of the boat are connected in any suitable manner to ropes c, passing over suitable pulleys connected to swinging arms suspended from the sides of the ship, this construction, and also the manner ot' raising and lowering the boat, being fully explained in my former patent, and therefore further description is deemed unnecessary.
The `clutches C are securely held in contact with the standards B by bolts d, which enter holes iu the standards and clutches. These bolts, which are covered by my former patent, are operated in the same manner, said bolts being connected to a lever, e, pivoted to a suitable frame connected to theinteriorof the boat. Vhen the ends of the bolts cl are engaged with the holes in the standards and clutches, the two, as previously stated, are securely locked together; b'ut in lowering the boat the bolts may be drawn at any time without danger ot' the clutches disconnecting themselves from the standards, owing to the weight ot' the boat, butafter the bolts are drawn, the boat., im mediately upon comingiin contact with `the Water, will automatically disconnect itself from its fastenings.
The clutches C, I prefer to form with a hooked end,f, so that when it is desired to raise the boat said hooks are made to engage with rings g, secured to the interior ot' the boat, this being considered the most eii'eclive and simple manner of attaching the boat to the ropes c, as it would be inconvenient to engage the clutches with the standards and lock the bolts, especially' Vwhere only one person is in the boat.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by I Letters Patent, is
