4 Claims. (Cl. 215-3) This invention is a dispenser for dispensing catsup and the like.
The general object of the invention is to provide a dispenser by means of which catsup and the like may be positively pumped out of a container for use.
A more particular object is to provide a dispenser of the character stated, which may be applied to a conventional catsup bottle for pumping catsup from said bottle upon foods, as and when needed by persons while eating.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinaiter as this specification progresses.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of rmy dispenser and a catsup bottle in which my dispenser is mounted.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section of my dispenser pump piston and cylinder.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section of the lower end of the pump cylinder and the intake valve of said cylinder.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same reference numerals in all of the gures, my invention comprises a pump designated I in its entirety, which includes an elongated tubular barrel 2, constructed with an intake valve 3 in its lower end, a spout 4 at its upper end and a bottle cap 5 near the lower end of said spout; a reciprocative valved piston l5 in said barrel, a piston rod 'I extending upwardly from said piston through a head 8 on the upper end of said barrel; a coil spring 9 surrounding said piston rod between said piston and said head; a handle lil secured on the upper end of said barrel 2 on said head 8; and an actuating lever Il pivoted at I2 to said handle Ill, to the short arm I3 of which lever is connected the upper and outer end of the piston rod l by means or a ball and socket joint Ill. The handle lll extends outwardly laterally at It a short distance from the upper end of the pump barrel 2, to a point i6 at which the actuating lever II is pivoted at l2, and extends downwardly at I'I from said point at an angle of substantially forty-five degrees with relation to the axis of said pump barrel, in position to be readily gripped by one hand, while the thumb of said hand is applied to the long outer arm I8 of the actuating lever I0.
The valve 3 comprises a cap I9, secured on the lower end of the pump barrel 2, and a flexible rubber valve disc 20 secured at its center t0 the inner side and at the center of the lower wall 2l said cap, by a rivet 22, over inlet openings 23 in said cap wall, so that said disc normally rests against the inner side of said cap wall and closes said inlet openings.
The piston 6 is threaded on the lower end of the piston rod l, as indicated at 24, and said piston is provided with ports 25 extending axially therethrough, which ports are opened on the down-stroke and closed on the up-stroke of said piston by a flexible rubber disc valve 2B, which is secured at the center thereof to the upper side of the piston 6 by a nut 2l threaded on the piston rod 'I against the upper side of said disc valve 26, which is provided with a central opening 28 through which said piston rod extends. A rubber packing ring 29 is tted in an annular groove 3B in the periphery of the piston 6 and forms a seal between the piston and the inner side of the pump barrel 2. The lower end of the spring 9 bears against the nut 28.
The pump barrel 2 extends through the bottle cap 5, with the upper wall 3| of the cap formed integral with said barrel at 32. The lowerv end of the side wall 33 of the cap 5 is formed with an annular internally grooved socket 34 adapted to spring over an annular external bead 35 on the neck Sii of a catsup bottle 31. v
The spout l extends upwardly and outwardly at an angle from the pump barrel 2 and the upper outer end oi said spout is normally closed by a cover 3B which is pivoted at its rear edge at 39 to the rear side of the outer upper edge of said spout, so that said cover swings closed by gravity when my pump is in an upright position, as shown in Fig. l of the drawing.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
The pump barrel 2 is introduced into the catsup bottle 3l through the mouth thereof, until the lower end of the barrel rests near the bottom of the bottle and the cap 5 ts over and closes the mouth of the bottle with the annular socket 3d of said cap sprung over the annular bead 35 around the bottle neck 36. A person, desiring to dispense oatsup from the bottle 3l for seasoning his food, grasps the angular portion il of the handle Ill with one hand, and upon raising the bottle 37 to a position, with the pump spout 4 directed toward said food and the spout 33 swung open by gravity, depresses the arm l@ of the actuating lever Il Iwith the thumb of his said hand,
vand then releases said thumb from said lever arm alternately, a sulicient number of times. When said arm I8 of said lever I I is depressed, as aforesaid, the piston 6 is raised against the tension of the spring 9, by the short arm I3 of said lever, through the ball and socket joint I4 and the piston rod 1, and the pistonvalve 29 is closed, so that catsup above the piston 6 is forced by said piston out of the barrel 2 and its spout l onto said food, while the inlet valve 3 is opened and catsup is drawn, by the suction of the piston 3, from the bottle 37 through the valve inlets 23 into the lower end of said pump barrel 2. When the arm i8 ofthe actuating lever' Il is released, as aforesaid; the piston 6 is forced down by the ex pansion of the spring 9, whereupon the inlet valve 3 is closed by the pressure of the piston 5, while" the piston valve 25 is opened by the pressure-of the catsup in the barrel 2 below said piston, so
that catsup below the piston passes through the piston ports 25 into the barrel 2above the piston,.
to be forced out of the barrel and its spout 4 as aforesaid.
The lower end of the barrel 2 may be bent to one side, as indicated in dottedlines'in'Fig. 1 of the drawing, to position said .endfof the barrel in thellower cornerofthe bottle 3l' adjacenttne underside of the-bottle, when the bottle is tipped to one side to direct the spout 4to a point'of'delivery of the catsup from the bottle, sothat the last small amount of the 'cat'sup remaining in the bottle, upon pumping the'catsup therefrom, will gravitate towardthe lowermost point of the bottle aroundsaidlower'end of the barrel and `be pumped out of the bottle by the pump, thus enablingthe pump to'pump practically all ofthe catsup out of the bottleb'efore it is necessary to removethe pump from the bottlel tomell the bottlewith additional catsup to be dispensed, as above described.

2. A dispenser as characterized by claim l constructed with a bottle cap -for closing the mouth of a bottle with the barrel extending through said mouth into said bottle.
3. A dispenser as characterized by claim 1 includingY a bottle cap secured on the dispenser barrel for closing the mouth of a bottle with the barrel-extending through said mouth into said bottle, said cap being formed with means for engaging the bottle to hold said cap in position closing the mouth of the bottle.
4. A dispenser as characterized by claim 1 constructed with a bcttlecap for closing the mouth of a bottle with the dispenser barrel extending through said mouth into said bottle, said cap being formed with a socketto be sprung over a bead on said bottle to hold Said cap in position closing the mouth of the bottle.
