June 20, 1950 J. EVANS SAFETY WATCH ATTACHMENT Filed Oct. 1, 1947 James Evans Patented June 20, 1950 1 UNITED STAT PATENTYtOF CE SAFETY WATCH ATTACHMEhlT' James Evans, Cody, Wyo. I
Application October 1, 1947, SerialNo. 777,220
This invention relates to improvements in safety watch attachments.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved safety watch attachment which'will provide a-double right angularly disposed lock between ,a wrist watch and its attaching. bracelet or strap.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved double locking clip attachment for securing a bracelet or wrist encircling band or strap to the attaching eye of a wrist watch, whereby in the event that one locking device is accidentally released, the second locking device will positively hold the clip and bracelet or strap firmly connected with the wrist watch to prevent the loss of the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a double progressively actuated locking clip for securing a bracetlet or band to a wrist watch including a hinged U-shaped clamping member and a pivoted attaching arm mounted upon said clip for movement at right angles to the movement of said U-shaped clamping arm, and resilient tensioning means engageable with said attachin arm for holding the same normally in closed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved double safety watch locking attachment which will be highly efficient in operation, and
relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the improved safety watch attachment shown connected respectively with a wrist watch and a watch supporting bracelet or band;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the improved safety watch attachment shown in released po sition connected respectively to a wrist watch and to a watch supporting bracelet or band;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved safety watch attachment including a link I secured to the end of a wrist encircling wrist watch supp rting bracelet or band i j 1Claim. 31.24-2411 2; and having the improved safety clip generally denoted by the reference numeral 6 pivotally supported upon the transversely extending pivot pin 1 disposed transversely of the outer end of said link I.'"%' '1 The clip 6 will be split at 8 on its outer end, and will be also split alon'gone side edgethereof as at 9. Arcuate oppositely disposed seats l0 and i I will be formed in the opposite sides of the side slot or split portion 9 of the clip 6, while the outer edges 12 and I3 disposed at the opposite sides of the end split or notch 8 in the clip 8, will be rounded and directed inwardly as at M and I5, for purposes hereinafter more fully described.
A fixed arm ill will be supported in the link 6, and will be formed with an inwardly directed arcuate semi-circular terminal attaching hook end I1, and a similarly shaped arm l8 will be pivoted upon a vertical pivot pin l9 supported by said link 6, and will be formed with an oppositely and inwardly directed arcuate semi-circular terminal attaching hook end 20 which will be swung to open position, as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings when the clip is to be positioned in the eye 2| in the wrist watch '22, or is to be removed therefrom.
It will be understood that the resilient inwardly directed ends of the link 6 will exert a resilient pressure upon the pivoted hook end 20 to hold the same in closed position, should the outer U-shaped pivoted locking member 23 be accidentally or purposely released and opened. The locking member 23 is pivotally supported upon the pivot pin 7 to overlie the clip or link 6, and will be provided with parallel extending supporting arms 24 and 25 at its inner end for pivotal movement upon said pivot pin 1 in a direction at right angles to the pivotal movement of the attaching hook end 20 pivotally supported upon the pivot pin I9. The locking member 23 will be substantially U-shape in cross-section, and will have its side arms connected together by means of the crossed reinforcing band 26, which will be extended centrally to provide an actuating lug 21.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the mode of operation of the improved safety watch attachment will be as follows: When the clip is removed from the watch 22, the locking member 23 will be pulled outwardly or swung outwardly upon the pivot pin 1, as clearly illustrated in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawing, and the arcuate semi-circular terminal attaching hook end 20 will be swung outwardly upon its pivot I9, whereupon the arcuate semi-circular terminal attaching hook end I! may be inserted within the eye 2! of the wrist watch 22, and the arcuate semi-circular terminal attaching hook end 20 pushed inwardly until its outermost end lies opposite to and engages the end of the hook end H. In this position, the inwardly directed opposed shoulders I 4 and 5 at the opposite sides of the end slot 8 in the clip 6 will slide over the hook end 20 to resiliently tension the ,sameand hold it in its closed position. The locking member 23 will then be moved inwardl until it snaps over the clip 6 thereby providing a double lock for the safety device which will positively prevent the same from accidentally being released from the watchqin the.
event that the looking member 23 is swung out wardly.
While the preferred embodiment :of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is'not'intended to limit the scope of the invention theretopas'many minort'changes in detail of construction: may. be resorted to withoutdeparture from the spirit of the: invention -as defined in the v appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed asrnewzis: sa'fety clip -for r-attaching two-"articles .to-
gether comprising a fixed and a pivoted arcuate semi-circular terminal hook supported by said clip, said clip being split along the outer end and along one side edge thereof for permitting said pivoted hook end to move laterally of said clip, displaceable resilient inwardly directed edges formed along the opposite sides and end of said split portion of said clip, being deformed as said pivoted hook end is moved outwardly, andsa lockingmember adapted to-overlie and encase said clip being pivotally supported thereon at right angles to the pivotal movement of said tpivoted hook end.
