Description

v. J. GENTILE BOOK MATCH COVER `Iyune 6, 1950 Filed Nov. 5, 1946 Patented June 6, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BOOK MATCH COVER Vincenzo James Gentile, Hartford, Conn.
Application November 5, 1946, Serial No.`707,961
2 Claims. (Cl. 20G-29) My invention relates to book matches and more particularly to covers for such matches and to the arrangement of the matches therein.
'I'he object of my invention is to provide a cover for book matches adapted to receive the matches therein, so that the match heads are located in a pocket formed by the cover and are not exposed to any accidental ignition.
Another objection of my invention is to provide a book match cover adapted to protect the match heads and the striking surface on the cover against being spoiled through dampness.
Other objects of my invention may appear in the following specification describing my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention.
It is however to be understood, that my invention is not to be limited or restricted to the exact construction and combination of parts described in the specification and shown in the drawings, but that such changes and modications can be made, which fall within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings:
Figure lis a plan view of an unfolded cover for book matches, a group of such matches being shown arrangedV on said cover.
Figure 2 is an elevational front view of a finished, open cover of book matches, containing a group of matches.
Figure 3 is an elevational side or end view of a finished cover for` book matches, containing such matches, and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through a closed cover for book matches containing such matches.
Referring now in detail to the drawings the cover for book matches according to my invention is made from damp proof card board or similar material and body or rear portion IU of rectangular form. On the bottom edge of the rear portion I :a downwardly extending short flap I I is formed having also a rectangular shape. On the top edge of the rear portion a comparatively long rectangular flap I2 is formed. On the right hand side edge of the rear portion I0 a short flap I3 is formed, while on the left hand side of the rear portion I0 a long ila-p I4 is formed.
A group or package of paper matches I5 is arranged in two layers. The matches of each layer are connected with each at a narrow continuous strip I6 of the paper, from which the matches are formed.
The two layers of paper matches I5 are placed on the inner side of the rear portion II), so that the heads of the matches point downwardly and the matches in the lower layer extend upwardly somewhat beyond the matches of the upper layer. The short ap I3 on the right hand side is folded over the matches I5, and this flap is long enough to form an end wall and to extend somewhat beyond the vertical center line of the rear portion I0. The long flap I4 on the left hand side of the rear portion I0 is folded over the matches I5 and the right hand ap I3 and is long enough to form a second side wall and to extend over the entire front of the cover.
The lower edges of the side flaps I3 and I4 respectively are arranged on the same level with the bottom edge of the rear portion I0 and the upper edges of these side flaps are arranged on a level somewhat below the continuous paper strip I6 connecting the 4matches of the front layer.
On the front side of the folded over portion of the long left hand side flap I4, a strip I1 of the usual material for lighting matches is provided extending transversely over said flaps and located adjacent the upper edge thereof.
The bottom ap I I is folded upwardly over the folded left side flap I4 and extends upwardly approximately to the lower edge of the striking surface I1. A staple I8 extends through the folded bottom ap, the left side ap, the right side ap, the two layers of matches and the rear portion. The ends I 9 of the staple are folded over against the rear portion. The top flap I 2 is folded downwardly to cover the matches and the end edge of this flap is inserted between the upper portion of the folded bottom flap II and the folded left side flap I4, thereby covering and protecting the striking surface I1.
By using a package of book matches as described above the danger of accidental ignition of the matches is eliminated because the heads of the matches are safely secured inside a pocket formed by the portion of the cover of the package, At the same time the matches as well as the striking surface are protected against being spoiled by dampness.
Having described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A match book comprising a sheet material cover comprising an elongated rectangular back portion having a pocket of tearable matches secured to its forward face at one end thereof and extending longitudinally of said back portion, said matches having heads located adjacent to the opposite end of said back portion, side flaps on opposite side edges of said back portion, said side naps being shorter than said back portion and spaced from said one end of said back portion and having ends level with the said opposite end of said back portion, a short end flap on the said opposite end of said back portion shorter than said side flaps, said side flaps being folded inwardly upon said match pocket, the outer of the side aps being wide enough to extend substantially entirely across said back portion and across the outer sideiothe other side flap, said short end flap being' folded onto said outer side ap and being suiiciently shorter than said outer side flap to expose an area along a free end portion of said outer side ap, a match igniting strip'enf-.said
exposed area, the secured ends of the matches being exposed between said sideflaps andthesaid one end of the back portionyfand -aflongend nap on the said one end of said back portion and folded to cover said igniting strip.
2. A match book comprising a sheet material f coverJl comprising an 'elongated vrectangularaback portion?hauling.t atpocketiof Atear-ablef-match'es vse- "curedto itsrifforwards-face fat kone yend-t thereof .fand extending i longitudinally fof. saidihackffportion, i saidf'lrnatches'` having heads flocate'di'adjacent s to 'Ethe fopposite fend'of said? back portion; sidel flaps K on fiopposite? side-:edges Tof asaid -ba-ckz portion; :said iside? flaps being Ssh'orter'tthan said back" portion `Band spacedfrum saidzone endof said backfportion ei-andrhavingends: level withathef'said opposite end 'fofvsa-idback portion; a short-ien'diap on thefsaid oppositeaen'df'of fsaid z'back rportionshorter'than said side zf'laps; said sidefl'apsabeing foldedinwardly upon said match pocket, the outer of the side aps being wide enough to extend substantially entirely across said back portion and across the outer side of the other side flap, said short end flap being folded onto said outer side flap and being sufficiently shorter than said outer side flap to expose an area along a free end portion of said outer side flap, a match igniting strip on said exposed area, the securedends, of the matches ,*beingfexposed-abetvveen` saidesidzI-'aps and the said one end of `the back portion, and a long end dap on the said one end of said back portion and *folded to cover said igniting strip, said long end `jflap:liaving a free end arranged to be inserted under a free end portion of said short end ap.
