This invention relates to a device for use in the practice of hanging wall or ceiling paper. More particularly, the invention contemplates provision of a device through which paper, as provided in rolls, may be passed and, during such passage, will have received a uniform coating of paste on one surface and the edges thereof trimmed to the pattern edge or as may otherwise be desired.

It is known that other devices or mechanisms of this nature have heretofore been developed. It is believed, however, that the present invention carries out the pasting and trimming operations in a novel, accurate and eilicient manner, the particular advantages of the invention being made clear in the following objects and description.

It is an important object and advantage of the present invention to provide a device for properly pasting and accurately trimming paper of the type commonly applied to building Walls and ceilings.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of the class described which, through the inclusion of adjustable trimming means, enables, as the paper passes through the device, the accurate trimming to pattern or border margins, as may be required.

Another object of the invention lies in the provision of a device of the class described in which adjustable means is provided by which to remove the trimmed margins of the paper prior to its leaving the device.

A still further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the class described, means for accurately controlling the amount of paste that may be applied to a surface of the paper as it passes through the device.

Other objects and advantages will be more fully understood from a consideration of the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing; and in which Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a device embodying one form of the invention, parts being broken away to disclose certain of the structural details;

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, parts of the top or cover of the structure being broken away to disclose certain of the structural details;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end view showing the adjustable nature of the paper roll guide and trimmer, being taken substantially as suggested at 3-3 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view 2 taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1 and shows one of the trimmers and part of the controller for the paste applicator; and

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view taken substantially as indicated at 5-5 of Fig. 1, parts being broken away to show one of the trim removers.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numeral I0 is employed to generally designate a device embodying one form of the invention. For the purpose of the present disclosure, the invention is shown to comprise a generally rectangular box-like container Il. This container includes base wall I2 and side walls I3 and I4 which, for convenience, in use of the container to hold a quantity of paste, may include rounded portions I6 at the juncture of the side walls with the base Wall. The end walls I'I are of a height corresponding to the walls I3 and I4 and conform thereto as to contour. tached, in any suitable manner, to the outer face of wall I3, are angle brackets I8. Each bracket includes a bearing hub I9, the opening into which is slotted, as at 2|, to permit entry of the end of a rod 22 that is adapted to mount a roll of paper 23. Of course, the brackets I8 and hubs I9 are so spaced as to permit entry therebetween of the roll 23, and any means, such as adjustable collars 24, are mounted on the rod 22 and movable to properly locate and align the roll with respect to the container II.

Also located on the wall I3 is an entry aperture for paper from the roll 23. This aperture, as may be seen in Fig. 1, is defined by a plate 26, having a lip 21. The body of the plate is attached to the inner face of the wall I3, and the lip 21 extends outwardly through a slot formed in the wall I3. A ledge 28 mounts a cutter block 29 that extends the full width of the container. The top Wall of the paper aperture is formed by an angle bar 3| that extends the full width of the container, the lowermost flange being in close proximity with the lip 2'I to define the actual proportions of the paper aperture, as indicated at 32. The upstanding flange 33 of the bar 3I is formed with a horizontal slot 34 that extends nearly to the end walls I'I. The upper edge of the flange 33 may terminate ush with the top edges of the walls of the container II.

turned flange 4l. rhe aperture 32 constitutes the place of entry of paper from the roll 23, whereas the opening 38 constitutes the place of exit of the paper from the device and, for convenience, the upper edge of the ange 4I may be sharpened to constitute a place of severance of a desired length of paper as removed from the device.

It is believed advantageous to provide means for guiding the paper as it leaves the roll 23 into the entry aperture 32, and to this end, the guide members 42 are provided. Each of these guides includes a guide flange 43 and 'a body portion that is apertured to receive a bolt 44. The head of the bolt is located interiorly of the container, whereas the body thereof projects through the slot 35 and an opening in the guide '42. A pair of trimmer members are mountedin `the container Ii, each including an angle plated?, having a stud projecting through slot 34 to the exterior of the container and engaged by a wing nut i8 or its equivalent. AAttached to the ang'e "49` of the `plate 4l, by means of a screw 5l, is a swivel plate E2. The free Vend of plate 52 mounts a rotatable trimmer blade 53. In order that the blade 53 may at all times contact paper from the roll 23 as it passes over the clutter block 29, means is provided in the form of a spring 54 which is secured to the topl surface of Pflanged-9x and, extending beyond this flange, contacts a pin 56 carried .by the plate 52. It is evident that by loosening wingV nut 3 and moving the cutter structure just described in the plane determined by slot Sil, paper rfrom the roll 2,3 may be cut to any desired width within the container ll. Attached to the end walls il are brackets 5l which include portions that serve to mount a transversely disposed roller 5S. This roller aids 'in determining the path ol travel of the paper as it passes through the container. Also mounted in the container is a paste applicator that takes the form of a large roller 59. The 'axis of rotation of this roller is provided by stub )shafts El which are seated in upwardly opening bearings 62 carried by the end walis El. As may be seen in the drawing, the paste roller is of `large pro'- portions and extends well towards the bottom of the container il, as well as up to, or into that portion of the container denned by the cover 3'5.

The shaft E3 carries a block E@ to which is attached `a cleaner blade 69. This blade projects beyond the block 58 into close ,proximity with the surface of roller 55. It will be understood that paste of such oonsistency as to be properly applicable to wall-paper is intended to be located in the lower partof the container il, and the roller -59 is in part submerged therein. As this roller rotates in a Idirection indicated by the arrow A,fpasteadheres to the roller surface. The amount of paste applicable to a surface of the paper as it passes between rollers 58 and 5S may be accurately controlled by adjusting the blade 69. Adjustment of this blade is, of course, accomplished by rotation of shaft E3 through the niembers'64. A 4further roller 1l is positioned transversely within 4 the container l I, being mounted in suitable bearings '12 carried by the end walls l1. This roller is in close proximity with the surface of roller 59 at a point adjacent the hinged edge of the cover 36. The wall Il! is formed with a transversely extending slot 13, the lower edge of this slot being dened by an inturned flange 14. The ange 74 is also slotted, as at 16, for the purpose of mounting and permitting adjustment of a pair Aof trim removers ll. These trim removers may be secured at any point throughout the length of the slot by screws 18, and each includes a laterally 'and vertically oiset inger T9. Each finger 19 projects toward Vand into contact with the roller 1 I.

VIn operating the above described device, it is first necessary to ll the container Il with suitable paste to a level slightly below the bearings 62 'of the roller 59. This, of course, is done with the cover 36 in fully opened position. While the :cover is so positioned, 'a roll of paper 23 is on the brackets i8. A device of the class described comprising a container having an external paper roll support, a cover for said container, one Wall of said container being formed with a slot to provide a paper entry to said device, adjustable means for guiding paper into said slot, edge trimmer members adjacent to and adjustable in the direction of the length of said slot, a cutter board forming a continuation of one Wall of said slot, means yieldingly engaging said trimmer members with said board, a series of parallel rollers in said container determining a path of travel for paper passing through said device, one of said rollers serving as a paste applicator, means remote from said entrance slot for removing trimmed portions through an opening in a vertical wall of said container, and the cover of said container being slotted to provide a top exit for the paper.

A device of the class descibed comprising a closed container having an external paper` roll support, one Wall of said container being formed with a slot to provide a paper entry to said device, adjustable means for guiding paper into said slot, edge trimmer members mounted in said container adjacent said slot, a series of parallel rollers in said container determining a path of travel for paper passing through said device, one of said rollers serving as a paste applicator, adjustable means for determining the amount of paste applicable by said one roller to any given paper, one Wall of said container including a slot to provide a paper exit from said device, another of said rollers being located adjacent said exit slot, and adjustable means engageable With said other roller for removing the trimmed portions of said paper prior to its exit through said one Wall.
