L. BEOKMAN.
FRUIT JAR.
Nb. 250,488. Patented Dec. 6,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS BEOKMAN, OF FROSTBURG, MARYLAND.
FRUIT-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,488, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed July 22, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS BECKMAN, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Frostburg, in the county of Alleghany and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved method of sealing fruit-jars, showing the parts unlocked and the cover lifted out of place, exhibiting the canvas or textile covering of the rubber packing on the cover. Fig. 2is a similar view of the same, showing the parts locked, sealing the can or jar. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
This invention relates to that class ofdevices for sealing fruit jars or cans employing a yoke connected to the cover, and having its ends carried down and hooked into eyes or loops of a lever or bail pivoted or bearing in eyes or loops of a band encircling the neck of the jar or can; and it consists in covering the rubber packing of the cover with canvas or other textile material, and in locking or hridling the cover-sealing mechanism, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the jar or can, around the neck of which is placed, as is common, a band, a, having eyes or loops a at opposite sides.
B is a bail or lever, which is pivoted or bears in the eyes a, of the band a at its terminals, and provided thereabout with eyes or loops b, which receive the hooked endsofthe yoke G, passing through a perforated ridge ofthe cover D, by which the coveris connected thereto. Ihe arms of the yoke O are bent out of a straight line, as at b, so as to bring their inwardly-bent surfaces in contact with the coiled or looped portions of the band a, as at a, or against the V lever, as may be desired, to obtain the desired leverage upon the yoke as'the lever is sprung down, carrying the extreme lower ends of the yoke past a vertical axis passing through the pivotal points of the lever, which effects the sealing of thejar or can by forcibly and tightly sinking the packed portion of the cover into the neck of the can. The angular ends of the yoke, forced against the eyes in the band a, or against the pivotal ends of the bail or lever, arrest action of the lever when thejar has been sealed. The bail will stand out from the can orjar about in a horizontal position, and would be liable to be accidentally lifted by contact with the hand or other means while handling or storing, and thus unseal the jar, without means to counteract this.
E is a bridle or curved bar, with one end hooked into one of the loops 1) of the bail or lever B, and its other end adapted to be detachably hooked into the opposite loop of the said bail. After the sealing of the jar or can the free end of the bridle will be sprung into said opposite loop of the lever, which will prevent the unsealing of the jar, or the possible unlocking of the yoke and lever, besides enabling the carrying of the jar by the lever or bail.
The packing ring or rubber c of the cover D is covered with canvas or other textile material, F, to prevent the sticking or adhering of the rubber to the neck of the can or jar, thus, facilitating the removal of thestopper or cover.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bridle E, in combination with the yoke G, connected to the stopper or cover'D, and the bail or lever B, pivoted in a band around the neck of the jar, and having loops b and the bent arms I), substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS BEGKMAN.
