Description
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to containers for powdered materials and more particularly, though not necessarily exclusively, to improvements in powder dispensing means and closures therefor.
In accordance with the present invention, a novel and improved closure for the dispensing openings in a powder container is provided. Also, in accordance with the invention, the container is improved and its construction and arrangement is very much simplified whereby to promote ease and economy of container manufacture. A closure device constructed in accordance with the invention is capable of being constructed of an easily worked material, such as thin sheet metal and may be produced by a minimum number of forming operations.
Accordingly, the primary object is to provide a novel dispensing container for powdered material.
Another object is to provide a simplified container for dispensing powdered materials which may be provided with a readily constructed closure arrangement.
A further object is to providev a novel and improved closure for the dispensing opening or openings of a powder container.
A still further object is to provide a dispensing container for talcum powder or the like in which the dispensin openings are in a side wall of the container rather than in the top thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will, of course, become apparent and immediately suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which the invention is directed from a reading of the followin specification in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of a dispensing container constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of a portion of a closure arrangement constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 3 is a view from beneath of the closure part of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a View in elevation of the second portion of the closure arrangement;
Fig. 5 is a view in plan of the closure part of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a View in elevation of a closure part for a modified closure arrangement in accordance with the invention;
Fig. '7 is a view from beneath of the closure part of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a view in elevation of a second portion of the closure arrangement to suit the modified form of Fig. 6; and

The closure part 18 (Figs. 2 and 3) is substantially cup-shaped, as shown, to conform to the end l2 of the container I0 and may be constructed of plastic or thin sheet metal. The closure part I8 is frictionally held on the end l2 of the container so that openings 2| therein register with the container opening Hi. It will be understood that in place of spaced holes or openings 2 I, a slot of any desired shape may be formed in the closure part It so as to register with the slot I6 in the container end l2.
Depending skirt portions 23 and 24, one of Which appears in Fig. 2, are provided so as to limit movement of the outer nested closure part 26 shown in detail in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings.
The outer closure part 26 which, as stated, nests over the closure part I8, is provided with a slot or opening 28 which may be brought into register with the openings 2| and the slot It at will. The outer closure part 26, like the other parts heretofore described, may be formed of any desired material, such as plastic or thin sheet metal, and is provided with protuberances 3| and 32 which lie just beneath the lower edge 3d of the part l8 in the assembled relationship of the parts so as to maintain the closure part 26 in assembled position on the part l8. The edges 36 of the skirt portions 23 and 24 serve as stops for the outer closure part 26 to limit its range of movement from a fully closed position of the dispensing slot It to a fully open position. If desired, the outer closure part 26 may be provided with a fiaring flange or skirt 38 which registers with and covers an enlarged portion 39 at the end of the container.
From the foregoing it will be understood that when the parts are assembled to the container I!) in the order in which they are shown on the left hand side of the drawings, a compact side dispensing arrangement for the container illv is provided.
Figs. 6 to 9 of the drawings disclose a modified form or the invention as applied; to the closure parts. The container I, arranged as shown in Fig. 1, receives the modified closure members of Figs. '7 to 9 as well as the closure members of Figs. 2 to 5.
The inner closure member 42 shown in Fig. 6 is substantially cup-shaped so. as to fit over the end l2 of the container [0 with openings43 in register with the slot 16. Aslot 46in the closure part 42 serves in cooperation with protuberances and 49 (Fig. 9)v in the outer closure part 51- to limit the range of movement of this outer closure part.
The inner closure part 42, isnested within outer closure part with the protuberances 48 and 49 accommodated by the slot 46. A slot 53 registers with the dusting holes 43, and in turn, with the slot 1.6V in the end 12 of thecontainer it when the outer closure part 5], isturned to one extreme limit of its range of movement. When it is turned to the other extreme limit of its range of movement, the slot 53 nolonger registers with the dusting opening 43.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that this invention provides a dispensing container of simplified form and few parts. which may be readily assembled after thecontainer has been filled with the powdered material to be dispensed. Also, it is to be noted that inaccordance with the illustrative embodiment shown herein by Way of example, that the invention provides for the use ofparts which may be readily and cheaply manufactured.
Having now described. the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is the following;
1. A dispensing device comprising, a container having a neck provided with an end fillingopening and a dispensing opening in its side wall, a cup-shaped skirted closure member fitted over the neck, said closure member being provided with dispensing openings in its skirt alined with that provided in the side wall of the neck, the closure member having portions of its skirt cut away upwardly from its: lower edge to provide spaced stop shoulders, the provision of said cutaway portions in the skirt resulting in forming the skirt with relatively wide and narrow portions, the apertures in the skirt being located in the wide'portion of the skirt between the cutaway portions thereof, a second skirted cupshaped; closure member slidably fitted over the first closure member, said second member being provided with a. dispensing opening in its skirt adapted to be either alined or disalined with the openings in the first member, the second member having a skirt of substantially uniform height and sufiicient to extend below the lower edge of the skirt on the first closure member, the skirt on the second closure member being provided.
