DEVICE FOR HEATING WATER OVER LAMPS OR GAS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,111, dated November 29, 1881.
Application filed August 10, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom "it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES S. TALLMADGE, ofthe city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Heating Water over Lamps or Gas, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel and convenient device for supporting a vessel of water, or other liquid, over a lamp or gas-burner for the purpose of heating the liquid.
Myinvention is especially convenient for use in the sick-room or nursery,where it is desirable to beat any liquid, and where it is not desirable or convenient to have a fire in a stove.-
The nature of the various features of my invention will be apparent from the drawings and the following description.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents my device as applied to a lamp. Fig. 2 represents the device as applied to a gas-burner. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of mydevice, the standard being made in two sections, one telescoping into the other, for the purpose of adjustment. Fig. 4 represents the clamp by which the device is connected to the lamp or burner.
The clamping device consists of two sections, A A, pivoted together near their centers after the manner of a pair of shears. Each of these sections consists of a handle, a c, and a prong, b 11. These prongs'are shaped to conform to the shape of lamp or gas-burner upon which the device is to be used. In the manufacture of my device I have found it necessary to make these prongs only of two general shapesone for lamps and one for gas-burners. For use on lamps I make the clamp of the form shown in Fig. 4, the prongs b I) being made in the shape to grasp the neck of the lamp, as shown in Fig. 1. For use on gas-burners the prongs of the clamp are made smaller, so that they will tightly grasp the gas-burner, as shown in Fig. 2.
To one of the handles, a, of the clamp is secured a curved arm, B,which crosses over the other handle, as shown. In this arm B is a slot, 12*, through which passes a thumb-screw, B, which latter is screwed into the handle a,
so that when the prongs b b are made to clamp the lamp or gas-burner and the thumb-nut screwed tightly down the clamp will he firmly secured. Variousdevicesotherthan thethumbnut B may be used to accomplish the same purpose. For instance, the under sideof the arm B may be provided with a series of notches, and the handle a with one or more teeth to fit into said notches, and when the handles are brought together this arrangement of teeth and notches will hold the handles in the desired position.
To the arm a is attached the standard O, to the top of which is secured the bracket 0, upon which to set the vessel containing the liquid to be heated. The standard 0 is preferably so constructed or connected to the clamp that the height of bracket 0 above the blaze may be varied. This may be accomplished by forming the standard in two sections,'as shown in Fig. 3, one section being made to slide into the other, and a set-screw provided to retain the sections in the desired relative position. Another method of adjustment is that shown in Fig. 2, the standard 0 being free to slide through the opening in the handle a and capable of being secured by a set-screw, c.
A shield or screen, E, is loosely attached to the standard 0 in such a manner as to be readily moved up or down on the standard or removed therefrom. 'lhisscreenisintendedtobeplaced between the light and the patient or infant occupying the room, so that the water may be heated without any annoyance to the patient in the room.
My device, as will be seen, can be readily attached to or detached from alamp or gasburner without in any way injuring either.
What I claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of a lamp or gas-burner and a clamping device, substantially as herein described, and the standard 0, provided with the screen E and the brackets G,substantially as and for the purposes specified.
