Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a stapling device incorporating the principles of the invention in which the mechanism is suiiciently small and compact to be housed in a casing so constructed and proportioned that it has the appearance and size of a conventional writing instrument such as a pocket carried fountain line The stapling mechanism I6 is secured in a ferrule or ring member I| which is preferably formed of a short metal tubular section. The ferrule II surrounds an intermediate portion of the mechanism and forms a part of the housing for the same. The one end of the stapling mechanism l0 extends into a tubular casing I2 which is shaped to simulate the appearance of the barrel portion of a fountain pen and which has a screw-threaded connection at I3 with the ferrule II. The exposed portion of the stapling mechanism I6 constitutes the stapling head and is shown in Fig. l in the open position ready for use in the stapling operation. The stapling head may be contracted (Fig. 9) and positioned within the cap member I4 which telescopes over the same and which frictionally engages with the peripheral surface of the ferrule to hold it in connected or closed condition. The cap |4 is provided with a spring clip I which is secured on the closed end thereof by a screw |6 for fastening the same to the pocket of the user in the same manner as a pocket carried writing instrument.
The stapling mechanism ID consists of a staple storing and supply magazine I1, a bottom anvil carrying arm or plate member |8 and a top plunger shell or driving blade carrying cover member I9. The anvil member I8 and the plunger carrying cover member I9 are arranged on opposite sides of the magazine l1 and pivotally connected thereto to form therewith the stapling head which is exposed by removal of the cap I4 when it is desired to use the mechanism for driving a staple.
The staple supply magazine I'I (Figs. 5 to l0) 4 comprises channel-shaped inner and outer members 20 and 2 I, both of which are of generally upwardly opening U-shaped cross section. The outer channel member 2| is positioned at the forward end of the inner channel member 20 with its base 22 secured to the base 23 of the inner channel member 20 by means of rivets 24. 'Ihe outer channel member 2| is substantially less in length and somewhat wider than the inner channel member 20. It is arranged so that its side walls 25 and 26 extend upwardly in parallel spaced relation to the side walls 21 and 28, respectively, of the inner channel member 20 providing Y therebetween parallel guideways for receiving the downwardly extending legs of the staples indicated at 29.
The bottom or base 23 of the inner channel member 28 is cut away at the forward end to form the end edge 38, leaving end portions 3| and 32 of the side walls 21 and 28 extending forwardly of the same. The base 22 of the outer channel member 2| is cut back and provided with an upstanding tongue 33 which projects upwardly between the side wall extensions 3| and 32 of the inner channel member 20 adjacent the forward edge 30 of the bottom 23 of the same for a purpose which will be described.
The side walls 25 and 26 of the outer channel member 2| are turned inwardly at the forward end to form vertical end walls or fianges 34 and 35 having their terminating edges in opposed spaced relation and forming a vertical slot in the end of the magazine. The inner surfaces of the end fianges 3.4 and 35 are spaced a sufiicient distance from the end portions 3| and 32 of the inner channel walls 21 and 28 to accommodate a single staple and form therewith a vertical guideway through which successive staples are driven downwardly or laterally out of the magazine.
The staples 29 are urged in a forward direction in the magazine by a feed plate 36 which comprises a channel member of a size to be positioned over the walls 21 and 28 of the inner channel member 26 with the side walls 31 and 38 of the same extending downwardly in encompassing relation to the side walls 21 and 28. The walls 31 and 38 are provided with an inwardly directed detent or shoulder formation 39 which is received in the groove 40 provided in the respective side walls 21 and 28 of the channel memberI 20 to guide the feed plate 36 in its movement along the channel 20 and prevent its removal in a vertical direction. The feed plate 36 is provided at its rearward end with a reversely bent tongue 4| to which is secured one end of a tension spring 42. The other end of the tension spring 42 is secured to the upstanding tongue 33 at the forward end of the outer channel member 2 I. The feed plate 36 is relatively short and may be retracted to permit loading of the magazine from the top with a fresh supply of staples.
The plate 36 may be held in retracted position by placing its forward edges in abutting relation with the shoulders 43 which are formed by recessing the top edges of the walls 21 and 28 adjacent the rearward end of the channel member 20. The groove 40 is offset at 44 to accommodate the detent 39 in the retracted position.
A staple retracting plate 45 (Fig. 8) is arranged for limited sliding movement on the forward end of the magazine I'I to permit the staples to be moved toward the rear of the magazine a sufficient distance to withdraw the end staple from driving position. The hook 50 extends downwardlyA a suicient distance to eng-age the bight or base portion of the endstaple 29. The recesses 46 in the side -walls and 26 of the channel member 2| are located sufciently far 4above the tops-of the side vwalls 21 and 28 of the channel member 28 to permit sliding movement of thestaples `between the retracting plate 45 and the side walls 21 and 28.
The retracting plate 45 Ais provided with an upstanding pin 5| adjacent its rearward end by means of `which it may be manually-moved in 'a rearward direction to retract the staples in the magazine by engagement of the hook 58 with thev end staples. The retractingl plate 45 is provided witha rearward extension 52which projects within the ferrulewhen the magazine-isassembled with the-casing and holds the rearward end of the same in position in sliding relation with the channel member 2|. -i'Ihe retracting -plate 45 is provided at its forward end with an elongate aperture 53 so-that the supply of staplesV in the magazine will be visible to the user.
T-he ferrule is--provided with an'internal recess-54 which is generally rectangular in cross section and of suicient size to receivein-tight fitting -relation the-magazine l1. The -bottom 22 and side walls 25 and 26 of the outerfch-annel member 2| extend into the aperture -54 and dimples 54 are provided onl the sidewalls 25 and 26 `which snap into holdingrelationwith the inner marginal edgesof the aperture' 54 in the ferrule when the ferrule is forced=over the rearward end of the channel member 2| (Fig. 2). A set screw- 55 (Figs. 1 and 9) may be provided in the ferrule for rigidly securing the ferrule on the magazine l1.

The driving blade or plunger 82 is preferably formed by turning the forward end -of the top wall 18 downwardly and shaping the downturned portion to provide an outwardly ols'et central rib formation 83 and side or end blade formations 84 and 85. The rib-like offset portion 8`3-rides'in the space between-they end members-34 and 35 of the outer channel member-2| and prevents any lateral stressbeing transmitted 4to' the pivot by movement of the plunger 82 in the staple driving operation. The plunger 82 'is separated at the sides from the side walls 12 and 13 and the latter extend some distance beyond the forward face of the magazine I1 to give added protection to the plunger. The hook-like portion 5U of the staple retracting plate 45 projects into the inwardly opening recess formed by the rib 83 of the driving blade formation 82, when the plate 45 is in its forward position, permitting the foremost staple to be engaged by the blade formations 84 and 85 for the driving operation.
The cover member I9 is provided with an elongate aperture 86 at its forward end which is in general alignment with the aperture 53 in the forward end of the staple retracting plate 45 to permit the user to observe the supply of staples and also to permit the removal of a jammed staple, if necessary, during the operation of the device, without disassembly of the parts.
The cover member I9 is normally urged upwardly away from the magazine I1 by a small leaf spring 81 which may be conveniently secured to the top of the staple retracting plate 45 by the operating pin 5|.
The top wall 18 of the cover member I9 is rounded where it merges with the side walls 12 and 13 to conform to the inside contour of the cover member I4 when the latter is placed over the stapling head (Fig. l). Y
In using the device for a stapling operation the cap I4 is removed as shown in Figs. l to 5 and 9 allowing the plunger shell I9 and the anvil carrying member I8 to move outwardly away from the magazine I1 to the limit of their movement. The paper or other material 88 (Fig. 9) to be stapled is positioned between the anvil member I8 and the magazine I1 while the stapling head is gripped bythe user, with the fingers engaging the cover member I9 and anvil member I8. The members I9 and I8 are then pressed towards the magazine I1 to move the driving blade 82 through the Ivertical `guideway at the forward end of the stapling head and to drive the endmost staple 29. I
When it is desired to replace the cap I4 on the stapling head the pin 5I is manually retracted to withdraw the endmcst staple from the driving position and the cover member I9 and anvil member I8 are moved into closed position relative to the magazine I1 and held there while the cap I4 is positioned over the same and frictionally engaged with the ferrule II.
When the supply of staples is exhausted a fresh supply may be placed in the magazine I1 by removing the barrel I2 of the casing and retracting the feed plate 3B to expose the top of the magazine. If desired the feed plate 35 may be held in retracted position by engaging the forward end of the Vsame with the abutments 43 while the desired supply of staples is loaded into the magazine through the open top of the same. v Y
While particular materials and specific details of construction have been referred to in describing the illustrated form of the device, it will be understood that other materials and other details of construction may be restorted to within the spirit of the invention.

A stapling device comprising a long channel-like staple supply magazine having aV transversely extending staple driving guideway atthe forward end thereof Vand means for delivering successive staples into driving position -in said guideway, a short plate member having means for pivotally mounting the same at one end on the outer faces of the side walls of said magazine with the free end extending on one side of said guideway and forming a staple clinching anvil, a short channel-shaped member having the side walls thereof pivotally mounted at one end on the outer faces of the side walls of said magazine and' having a driving blade on the free end thereof in alignment with said guideway, said members being pivoted to the side walls of said supply magazine intermediate the ends thereof for swinging movement about a common axis and saidk driving blade being operable in said guideway for driving a staple toward said anvil, a ferrule detachably secured in encompassing relation with said magazine adjacent the pivotal connection of said anvil plate and blade carrying members, a tubular section enclosing the rearward end of said magazine and having its end detachably secured to said ferrule, and a removable tubular Vcap forming section enclosing the forward end of said magazine.
2. In a stapling device comprising a magazine and cooperating anvil and driving blade carrying members, said magazine having an inner member of generally U-shaped cross section with a portion of the bottom cut away at the forward end thereof and having an outer member of generally U-shaped cross section, said inner and outer members being secured to each other with their upstanding walls in spaced relation to form a longitudinal guideway for a supply of staples, said outer member having inwardly directed flanges on the forward end of the side walls thereof in spaced relation to the forward ends of the side walls of the inner member and forming therewith a transversely extending guideway for receiving a single staple, the bottom of said outer member being cut away at the forward end and provided with an upstanding tongue projecting above the bottom of said inner member, a staple feed plate slidable on the open top of said inner member having downwardly directed side wall portions positioned in said longitudinal guideway, a downwardly directed tongue on the rearward end of said feed plate, and a tension spring having opposite ends secured to the upstanding tongue on the magazine member and to the tongue on the feed plate, respectively, for urging the feed plate forwardly to feed successive staples into said transversely extending guideway.
3. In a stapling device comprising a magazine and cooperating anvil and driving blade members, said magazine having upwardly opening inner and outer channel members, said channel members being secured to each other with the side walls thereof in spaced relation to form a longitudinal guideway therebetween for a supply of staples, said outer channel member having flanges extending inwardly on the forward end thereof in spaced relation to the forward ends of the side walls of the inner channel member to form a transverse guideway for receiving said driving blade and a single staple in driving position beneath the same, a staple feed plateV slidable on the open top of said inner channel member, and a tension spring secured at opposite ends to the forward end of the magazine outer channel member and to the feed plate to urge the feed plate forwardly for feeding successive staples into driving position in said transverse guideway.

6. A stapling device as recited in claim 5 wherein said detent and recess means comprises an inwardly directed longitudinal rib formation on one of said feed plate wall formations and a cooperating longitudinal groove formation on the adjacent inner channel member wall portion.
7. A stapling device as recited in claim 5 and abutment formations on the top edges of the wall portions of said inner channel member adjacent the rearward end thereof for engagement by said staple feed plate whereby said feed plate may be held in retracted position against the operation of said tension spring while a supply of staples is positioned in the magazine.
8. A stapling device comprising a magazine having means therein for delivering staples successively to the forward end thereof, said magazine having means forming a transverse guideway at said forward end thereof, a plate-like member having an anvil forming portion extending beneath said guideway at one side of said magazine, said plate-like member having upstanding side wall elements longitudinally spaced from said anvil forming portion, said side wall elements being positioned closely adjacent the side walls of said magazine and being pivotally connected thereto and a cover member having a driving blade operable in said transverse guideway to drive successive staples against said anvil, said cover member having depending side wall elements positioned closely adjacent the side walls of said magazine and being pivotally engaged withthe side lwall elementsffof` saidfplate-:like member.= v

A stapling device comprising a magazine having a guideway at the forward end thereof, an anvil member having a pivotal connection with said magazine and extending beneath said guideway, a cover member on the side of said magazine, opposite said anvil member, said cover member having a pivotal connection with said magazine and having a driving blade operable in said guideway to drive a staple against said anvil, feed means in said magazine for resiliently urging successive staples into said guideway, means in said magazine for retracting the staples against the operation of said feed means, and a tube-like casing having a barrel portion enclosing the rearward end of said-magazine and extending adjacent the pivotal connection with said cover member, said casing having a removable cap portion adapted to be telescoped over the forward end of said magazine and to hold said anvil and cover members in non-operative closely associated relation with said magazine, said casing portions being so constructed that they simulate the appearance of a pocket carried fountain pen.
13. A stapling device comprising a magazine having a staple driving guideway at the forward end thereof, an anvil member having a pivotal connection with said magazine and extending beneath said guideway, a cover member having a pivotal connection with said magazine and'provided with a driving blade operable in said guide- Way to drive a staple against said anvil, staple feed means in said magazine for resiliently urging successive staples into driving position in said guideway, and means for retracting the staples in the forward end of said magazine to prevent the driving of the end staple upon driving movement of said driving blade.

A stapling device comprising a magazine having a staple driving guideway at the forward end thereof, an anvil member extending beneath said guideway, a cover member having a pivotal connection with said magazine and provided with a driving blade operable in said guideway to drive a staple against said anvil, a staple feed means in said magazine for resiliently urging the staples tovvard said guideway, and a manually slidable staple retracting plate in said magazine having a depending hook-like member at the forward end of said magazine for engagement with the endmost staple whereby said staples may be moved out of driving relation with said driving blade.

A stapling device comprising a magazine having a guideway at the forward end thereof, an anvil member having a pivotal connection with said magazine and extending beneath said guide- Way, a cover member at the opposite side of said magazine having a pivotal connection with said anvil member, said cover member having a driving blade operable in said guideway to drive a 12 staple against said anvil, means in said magazine for resiliently urging the staples toward said guideway, manually movable means for retracting said staples from said guideway, and a tubelike casing having a barrel portion enclosing the rearward end of said magazine and extending adjacent the pivotal connection with said anvil member, said casing having a cap portion adapted to be telescoped over the forward end of said magazine whereby said anvil member and said cover member may be moved into non-operative relation with said magazine without driving a staple to permit the same to be held in said nonoperative relation by said casing cap portion.
