2 Claims.
This invention relates to cartons or cases, especially as adaptable to be set up from flat blanks therefor.
This invention has utility when incorporated in a sheet material blank, as of cardboard, fiberboard and the like, appropriately peripherally shaped, with cuttings and scorings, for such dimensioned blanks to be assembled in bundles for forwarding to the place for use and there set up, say by stapling or stitching. The resulting container desirably may be of oblong form, say for two dozen beer bottles in four rows of six in a row, with a pair of flanged hinged lid sections as a top closure and hand-holes at the ends to permit ready handling. The gage and stiffness of the sheet stock may be sufficiently substantial for re-use, say for holding up in the range of twenty trips.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, with parts broken away, of an embodiment of the invention in an assembled container;
Fig. 2 is a distributed view of the container end reinforcement in the region above the hand-hole or grip;
Fig. 3 is a blank for the container of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a corner of the blank of Fig. 3 with the swing section loosened;
Fig. 5 shows the blank portion of Fig. 4 with cut portions removed;
Fig. 6 shows slight bendings at the various scoring lines;
Fig. 7 is a plan view of an end at 90 scoring folds for the corners;
Fig. 8 is a partial end elevation, showing initial stitching;
Fig. 9 shows reinforcement inner side of an upper end portion;
Fig. 10 is an outer view of such end showing stitching therefor;
Fig. 11 is a fragmentary view of a flanged lid 1 corner folded in plan;
Fig. 12 is a side view of the stitched lid corner of Fig. 11;
Fig. 13 shows lid flange variant blank portion from Fig. 3;
Fig. 14 shows full break-away for reinforce ment above the grip;
Fig. 15 differs from Fig. 14 in its break-away grip reinforcement; and
Fig. 16 in the similar blank fragment showings of Figs. 13, 14, 15, has its grip reinforcement in a difierent swing from Figs. 3, 13.
The blank in the flat form A flat blank (Fig. 3) has a bottom section sides 2, lid sections 3 extending to end flange 4. shown as defined by six parallel scorings 5. End sections 6 extend from the bottom End extensions I are from the sides 2. Lid end flange portions 8 are from the ends of the lid sections 3. Parallel scorings 9 define the ends of the sections I, 2, 3. Notches 0 separate the lid flanges 4 from flange corner sections l hinged to the end flanges B by extensions 2 of the scorings 5 between the lid sections 3 and the flanges 4. Notches I3 separate the bottom end extensions 6 from the side end extensions 1.
Minor or strengthening section I4 has a out line I5 to leave a bend section I5 connection to the top of the side extension 1. While these sheet material blanks are stacked in the flat, shallow notches I! provide seats for binding wire or cord for assembling such flat blanks in bundles for shipment to the destination where the containers may be set up.
The section M has a out line side IS with short uncut sections I!) to provide readily breakable connection with the lid flanges 8. For the lid flange corner as toward the lid section mounting hinge at the scoring 5, there is a cut defined section 20. Additionally there is in the section H! a cut defined section 2|. provide a. lid flange receiving seat or notch, for which there is a half portion 22 in the section 1 adjacent the line l5.
The bottom extensions 6 have centrally of their free ends hand-hole lower seat fractions 23, while the sections 1 adjacent the half notch portions 22, have half hand-hole portions 24.
An important consideration hereunder is that in the single ply flat form for the blank (Fig. 3) there is complete set-up material for a substantial case or container. A strap wire stitcher or stapler may be used in setting up the flat blanks as required for service. There is thus avoided warehouse cluttering with empty containers.
Building the case from the blank The course for the carton setting up operator is first to break the cord or wire binding the bundle of blanks. As such is removed clear of the shallow notches IT, a single blank is removed from the stack. Pressure is exerted at the four corners to break the short hold sections l9, so that the cutting line l8 is uninterrupted (Fig. 4).
Appropriately in order as the next step is for the operator to push the fully cut out triangular sections 20 and adjacent thereto the short finger- This section 2| is to v scoring hinges 9 for a 90 shift. In this same operation, the sides 2 may be swung on the hinges 5 into parallelism to extend between the end portions 6. With the sides 2 upright, the extensions 1 therefrom may be swung on the hinges 9 to provide an outer face against the portions 6 (Fi 7).
These two-ply portions 6, I, at the ends are now anchored together by stitchings or staples 25 (Fig. 8). A form-holding general set up for the container is thus established.
The reinforcement hinge-mounted-to-swing sections I4 are now forming the second and third plies for the case end as above the handholes 24 (Fig. 9). The full notches 25 of the pair of sections I i at a hand-hole 24 are in register with each other and the half notches 22 assembled by the stitchings 25.
The body portion of the case may now be completed by staples or stitchings 26 (Fig. 10) assembling the sections 14 into three-ply reinforcement upward from the hand-holes 2%.
Attention may now be given to the lid 3 in bringing its flanges i, 6, to 90 fold as toward the container bottom I, as the lid section 3 is swung thereabove. In this folding operation for the flanges 4, 8, on the score lines 5, 9, there is preliminarily a fold on the scoring hinge l2 to locate the extension H from the flange 8 to lie at the lid corner inside the flange 4 (Fig. 11).
At this nesting assembly positioned for the flange corner of the lid, stitching or stapling means 2'! provides firm anchoring (Fig. 12) and the case building up from the one-piece fiat blank is completed.
The blank as cut and in the flat, may at such time be given imprint as to the contents, volume thereof and other facts as appropriate, or such may be supplied upon completion of the container, as by a label or wrapping. With the container or case stapled for rigidly retaining its set up position, it is in readiness to be charged, say with bulk material, or if there is to be minor containers, as bottles, filler or spacer means or partitions may be set up, and the bottles loaded thereinto. Upon completion of the case filling operation, the pair of similar lid sections 3 may be swung on their hinges 5 toward each other to come to position for fully closing the container top. In this operation, the pair of flanges 4 ride snugly into abutting relationfor eifectively sealing, even against normal weathering attack. There is additional frictional locking due to the reinforcement or two-ply corners H, 4, which as a pair make four ply as riding into the notch pair 2| and the supplemental notch completed by the half-notches 22 in register. This provides a substantial across-the-top end rigidity for the case, even tho only of fiberboard. Furthermore the staples 26 provide wear resistance as well as heavily filled case form-holding value for the three-ply region of the sections 1 and the pair of sections 14 above the hand-hole 24. The container may be readily opened and reclosed by swinging the lids 3 on the hinges 5.
Modifications As with the blank of Fig. 3, the elements forming the blank may be sent in one piece and flat to the job for set-up. There is departure (Fig. 13) in that a cutting line 28 is a continuation of the scoring 9 as leaving the side section 2, and at the end of the lid section 3, fully across to a scoring extension 29, in lieu of the cut-out or notch 10. With the scoring 12 retained, there is but single ply at the corner of the lid as there is folding on the score line 12 to bring a section 39 with its tongue 3| flat against the underside of the lid 3 with a folding of a minor section or flange 32 as to the section 39 and the flange 4 in completing the corner for the section to be anchored by adhesive or staple means in completing this lid modification set up.
The flange 8 and the reinforcing ply flange H for the lid corner is retained (Fig. 14) over the single ply flange for the lid corner of Fig. 13. Instead of the reinforcing section 14 and the knock-out portion 29 of Fig. 3, the portions I4, 20, are a knock out unit 32 (Fig. 14). There is resultantly not occasion for the swing positioning, but a laying-on or definite placing of the section 32 at register for the notches 2i and anchored over the hand-hole 2d at the half notches 22.
Minor or strengthening section 33 (Fig. 15) is shown of minor width to leave the container end below the hand-hole 2:! single ply of the section 8 minus the seat portion 2-3. The blanking out accordingly is like that of Fig. 14, by omitting entirely the portion 32 therefrom, as the equivalent of such section is taken from the section '1 to form an end section 34.
Instead of a full cut away for the reinforcement section 33 of Fig. 15, a reinforcement section 35 (Fig. 16) has a swing hinge 35 for shifting out of end section 3?, modification of the section 1.
There may be occasion for conforming to a special variant as above disclosed to meet special conditions in practice. Thruout there is retained the utility of one-piece blank for complete set up.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A blank for a container, said blank comprising three parallel series of separated sections, the central section comprising in series a flange, a lid section, a side, a bottom, a second side, a second lid section and a flange therefrom, and each of the two side series, separated from said central series by scorings and extending the full length of said central series, comprising: end flanges on said lid sections, half-end sections extending from said sides and having open ended slits at their outer edges which cooperate when all said sections are folded together into said container to form grip portions for hand holes at each end of said container, lower end sections extending from said bottom for spanning said half-end sections below said grip portions of said hand holes of said container, and rectangular minor sections extending longitudinally of said blank parallel to said series of sections and secured to said half-end sections only at one inner corner of said minor sections by a bendable section, said bendable section being adjacent said open ended slit and providing, when folded into a container, overlapping pairs of said minor sections spanning said half-end sections above said grip portions of each hand hole.
