2 Claims.
This invention relates to a combined display and storage cabinet particularly adapted for handling small articles or goods such as thread spools and the like but also capable of a more general application. Broadly speaking, the invention comprises a cabinet'having a multiplicity of shelves extending through one side thereof, each shelf being closely spaced one adjacent another and adapted to support goods in an easily visible position, and each shelf having a concealed shelf or storage place'undern'eath it for storing said goods in a concealed position.
An object of the invention is to provide a combined display and storage cabinet as described. Another object is to provide such a cabinet in an attractive, compact, and easily maneuverable form. Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
The invention may be better understood by referring to the accompanying drawings in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the cabinet, partially broken away at several places to reveal the interior construction;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the cabinet taken along line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a broken side view, somewhat enlarged, of a movable support of the cabinet, showing merchandise supported thereon;
Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the movable support of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is an end view of packaged merchandise such as that shown in Fig. 3.
As seen in the drawings, the cabinet comprises an elongated container or box H of generally rectangular shape. The container is formed with side walls I2 and I3 and front and back walls M and I5, respectively. Wall I4 is bent, as at I6, in the direction of the back end of the cabinet, the slanted portion I! of the wall so formed being suitable for receiving advertising matter and the like. Top side I8 and bottom side IQ of container II are open. End walls l4 and I carry bottom cross members and 2|, respectively. Similarly, the side walls I2 and I3 are provided with bottom longitudinal members 22 and 23, and also with upper reenforcing members 24 and 25, respectively (Fig. 2).
Container II has a plurality of inclined supports extending transversely across it from one side to the other, each support being spaced one behind the other within the container from end to end thereof. Each support comprises a back member 3| having a pair of side members 32, 33 on each side and-a; bottom member 34, all extending outwardly ofthebacls member and substantially atfright' anglestliereto. The supports are preferably i'nYa' fixedposition, being attached totheside walls l2 and: t3 of the 'container throughth'eir-sidemembers, as by means of adhesive or bolts, or by brazing or welding in the case of a metallic cabinet. 'Thejl'ast support in the rear of'the' cabinet is also supported by a cross member 35 which isattached to the rear wall I5. Each support issubstaii'tiallyconcealed from view by the supports a'djacent 'itj'and this is particularly true when the cabinet isviewed from the front end 'l'n the normal-manner. "As shown in Fig. 1-, side wall'sl2 3- also conceal the supports. I
The fixed supports' 3ll serve to' hold the trays or movable: supports 40; each fixed support holding in an inclined position at least one tray, and preferably two or three or more in side by side relation. In Fig. 2, three movable supports are shown resting against a fixed support. Each of the movable supports or trays comprises a back 4| having side members 42, 43 and a bottom member 44 extending outwardly and forwardly of the back (Figs. 2-4). The back has a ledge or shelf 45 intermediate the ends of the back which serves to divide the tray into upper and lower parts 46, 47, respectively. Where the tray is made of sheet metal, as is preferred, the shelf may be formed by cutting a section of the back along all but one side thereof and then bending the section outward or forward of the back along the uncut side to form a ledge or shelf. The shelf 45 has a cutout 48 therein (Fig. 4). The upper part 46 of each tray serves as a display portion to support and display goods, receiving them on shelf 45 preferably in unpackaged form such as thread spool 49. Each shelf may support a number of spools, shelf 45, for example, being just large enough to receive three spools. The lower part 41 forms a depository for storing packaged goods in a concealed position, the goods being received on bottom member or shelf 44 and usually comprising the same articles displayed on the shelf 45. In Fig. 5 is shown a package or box of thread spools, the box having data 5| relating to size and color, etc., on one end thereof. Box 50 is adapted to fit snugly into the depository 41 with the end having the data 5| disposed immediately underneath shelf 45. When all of the thread spools 49 displayed on shelf 45 have been sold or removed, data. 5| on box 50 will be visible through the cut-out 48, thus providing inventory information to sales persons. Discs 52 of resilient material are provided at each corner of the cabinet to support the same.
It will be apparent that packaged goods such as box 50 will be stored on shelves 44 ina concealed position, since the side walls 12, 13 of container ll substantially conceal or are at least coextensive with the depositories or storage portions 41 of trays 40, thus concealing the packages on the shelves 44 (Fig. 1). The display shelves 45 and the thread spools supported thereon also aid in concealing the upper ends of the packages. As shown, shelves 45 are evenly disposed and extend through the open side i8 of the container, protruding above the side walls l2 and [3 at a substantially uniform height.
The invention as described represents a preferred form, and it will be understood that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention.
In the light of the foregoing description, the following is claimed:
1. A combined storage and display cabinet comprising a box having an open top, said box having a plurality of fixed supports extending transversely across thereof, said fixed supports being disposed one behind the other within the box, said fixed supports each supporting at least one movable support, each said movable support comprising a back having a shelf extending outwardly therefrom intermediate the ends of said back and dividing the latter into upper and lower parts, said lower part of the back forming a depository for storing packaged goods in a concealed position. said upper part of the back extending through the open top of the box and forming a display portion for supporting and displaying said goods in unpackaged form.
2. A combined storage and display cabinet comprising a rectangular box having an open top, said box having a plurality of fixed inclined supports extending transversely across the box from side to side thereof, said fixed supports being disposed one behind the other within the box from end to end thereof, said fixed supports each supporting a plurality of movable supports in side by side relation, each said movable support comprising a back having a shelf extending outwardl therefrom intermediate the ends of said back and dividing said movable support into upper and lower parts, said lower part forming a depository for storing packaged goods in a. concealed position, said upper part forming a display portion for supporting and displaying said goods in unpackaged form, said shelf having a cut-out therein by which data carried by the packaged goods may be seen after the unpackaged goods have been removed from said display portion.
