This invention relates to a stove lighter.
An object of this invention is to provide a lighter for stoves, fires or the like which includes a swab formed of non-inflammable material adapted. to receive and absorb an inflammable liquid. The swab is carried by a plunger rod which is slidable in a tubular housing, and the rod is spring pressed to an inner extinguishing position within the housing.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lighter of this kind which will be automatically extinguished.
A further object of this invention is to provide a lighter which is of simple construction so as to be capable of production at relatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a stove lighter constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section partly broken away taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing the numeral I designates generally an elongated tubular housing which has a handle H extending downwardly therefrom adjacent the rear end thereof. An elongated plunger rod [2 is slidable in the housing I0 engaging through a rear plug I3 secured by a fastening means [4 in the rear end of the housing !0.
An intermediate pair of rod guide members l5 and [6 are disposed within the housing I0 being secured by fastening members I! and [8, respectively. The rod or bar l2 has a knob [9 disposed on the rear end thereof, and the rod I2 is constantly urged rearwardly by means of a spring positioned about the rod I2 and abutting its forward end against the guide IS. The rear end of the spring 20 abuts against a washer 2| disposed on the rod [2 and held against rearward movement relative to the rod l2 by means of a cotton pin 22.
The rod or bar l2 has secured to the forward end thereof a swab or fibrous member 23 which is preferably formed of non-inflammable material such as asbestos fibers or the like. The swab 23 is secured to a relatively short rod or bar 24 which is flexibly connected to the forward end of the rod or bar I 2 by means of links 25 and 28.
The forward end of the housing In is flared as indicated at 21 and a metal washer 28 is secured by fastening means 29 on the forward end of the rod 24 and is adapted to sealingly engage in the flared member 2'! so that when the swab 23 is in its normal position within the tubular member I0 the swab 23 will be extinguished.
In the use and operation of this lighter the swab 23 is soaked with inflammable liquid being extended beyond the forward end of the tubular member I0 by pressing the knob l9 forwardly so as to dispose the swab 23 in substantially the dotted line position shown in Figure 2.
The lighter is used by holding the handle I l in one hand and using a finger or thumb to press against the knob l9 and hold the swab 23 in its forwardly extended and lighting position. When the stove is properly lighted the knob [9 may be released whereupon spring 20 will retract the swab 23 into the forward end of housing l0, and at this time washer 28 will engage against the flared portion 21, of the housing I 0, cutting off entrance of air into the housing and thereby effecting an extinguishing of the fire of the swab 23.
We claim:
A lighter comprising an elongated tubular housing formed with a flared forward end, a plunger rod slidable in said housing and projecting from the rear end thereof, apertured guide members for said rod secured interiorly of said tubular housing at spaced intermediate points, an absorbent swab normally disposed in the for- Ward end of said housing, a bar extending longitudinally through said swab, a washer of greater diameter than said housing held to the outer end of said swab by said rod and adapted to seat in said flared end, a linked flexible connection between said bar and said ro'd, a washer secured adjacent the rear end of said rod, a spring positioned between said last named washer and one of said guide members normally biasing said rod in a direction to retract said swab, and a handle on the projecting end of said rod.
