SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 959,459, dated June 13, 1882-.
Application filed March 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARVEY G. BAKER, of West Alexandria, in the county of Preble, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Swinging Gates; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specili cation.
This invention relates to certain improvements in mechanism for operating gates; and it has for its objects to provide certain improved means for opening and closing the gate from either side and for latching and unlatching the same, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the mechanism and devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved gate, showing the mechanism for operating the same. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal sectional View of the gate-post and the lower hinge. Fig. 3 represents a view of the gate-post to which the latch is attached, showing a front view of the latch. Fig. at represents a detached top view of the latch devices, and Fig. 5 a perspective view of the post and latch.
The letterA indicates the gate, and B the post, to which it is hinged. The upper hinge is of the ordinary construction, or it may be of any approved pattern. The lower hinge is composed of a bracket, 0, provided with an angular slot, 1*], the ends of which terminate in rounded apertures, as indicated by the letter F, to form bearings for the pintle G, which is attached to a bracket, I1, secured to the gate, and carryingafriction-roller, G. To the lower end of the pintle is pivoted a lever, I, which has loosely secured to its ends the links K, to which are attached the rods L, which are connected with the chains M, passing through guides N, secured to the posts P, or otherwise supported. The chainsconnect with the levers R,journaled in suitable bearings, S, as indicated in Fig. 1. The levers are weighted, as indicated in Fig. 1, so as to drop automatically to a normal position after beingshifted.
The letter T indicates a bracket secured to the gate-post U, against which the gate abuts when closed. The bracket is provided with a shelf, W, inclining to each side downwardly, and the said shelf is slotted, as indicated by the letter Y, and is provided With a central bearing, Z, for the pivot of a double-weighted pawl, A, which swings in the slot, the dogs A of said pawl projecting upward at each side of the pivot, so as to automatically engage and lock the gate when closed from either side.
To prevent the displacement of the pawl from its bearings, I secure to the bracket T on its side adjacent to the post a plate, T The depression in the shelf is made deep enough to retain the roller U on the end of the pin V at the free edge of the gate, whereby the gate will be held in normal position unless violently jarred or abutted against, when the said roller will come in contact with one ofthe arms ofthe pawl and prevent the further opening of the gate unless operated by the levers 1t and their intermediate connection, which act to elevate the free end of the gate and cause it to pass clear of the pawl.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The gate being closed, a team approaching in either direction may cause it to open anton1atically by driving over the lever at that side, which, by means of the connections, pulls the pintle to one side, elevating the gate, unlocking its forward edge, and causing it to swing open. After passingthrough the gate in driving over the opposite lever the gate is closed.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the bracket 0, pro vided with an angular slot, E, having rounded pintle-bearings F, and a pintle-bearing at the apex of the slot, the pintle secured to the gate, and the link pivoted to said pintle, and the connecting-bars, chains, and levers, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
2. In combination with the gate and gatepost, the bracket secured to the post, provided with a shelf inclined in opposite directions, a slot and central bearing, and the doubleweighted pawl pivoted in said bearing and adapted to automatically engage and release the bolt 0f the gate to lock and unlock the same, substantially as specified.
